  • We propose, in this paper, a new query expansion technique with term reweighting. All terms in the documents feedbacked from a user, excluding stopwords, are selected as candidate terms for query expansion and reweighted using the relevance degree which is calculated from the term-distribution similarity between a candidate term and each term in initial query. The term-distribution similarity of two terms is a measure on how similar their occurrence distributions in relevant documents are. The terms to be actually expanded are selected using the relevance degree and combined with initial query to construct an expanded query. We use KT-set 1.0 and KT-set 2.0 to evaluate performance and compare our method with two methods, one with no relevance feedback and the other with Dec-Hi method which is similar to our method. based on recall and precision.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate discrepant Earth Science terms in high school curriculums and to explore the alternative to those terms. In this study, we defined discrepant terms as different terms which had the same meaning in Earth Science textbooks. Discrepant terms were compared with terms in references and precedent studies, and the preference by 284 of teachers and students was investigated. The results of this study are as follows: A number of discrepant terms were found in references as well as high school textbooks. Participants preferred terms that are more understandable, were learned previously, and were correct to loanword orthography. As for the cases of discrepant terms caused by different notation of proper nouns or different references and background knowledge, the alternative could be explored by the rule of loanword orthography or the journal publications. In conclusion, confusion may be reduced by utilizing common terms that are both based on authorized theory and easy to convey the meaning.

  • The trends of technical terms express the changes of particular subjects in a specific research field over time. However, the amount of academic literature and patent data is too large to be analyzed by human resources. In this paper, we propose a method that can detect and analyze the trends of terms by modeling the life cycle of the terms. The proposed method is composed of the following steps. First, the technical terms are extracted from academic literature data, and the TDVs(Term Dominance Values) of terms are computed on a periodic basis. Based on the TDVs, the life cycles of terms are modeled, and technical terms with similar temporal patterns of the life cycles are classified into the same trends class. The experiments shown in this paper is performed by exploiting the NDSL academic literature data maintained by KISTI.

  • The objective of this study was to understand the dietary life of North Koreans through the examination of dietary life terms assembled and classified from the North Korean sources. In order to ascertain any contrasting aspects and also to improve the degree of understanding, the comparable terms from the South Korean sources were also assembled and classified accordingly. The North Korean sources were the two dictionaries and the two Web sites related with the dietary life in North Korea and those of the South Korean sources were the middle school Home Economics textbooks in South Korea. The major findings of this study on the dietary life terms of North Korea were as follows: 1) The majority of the classified dietary life terms was from the food sector; 2) There were terms which were indicative of the food supply situation in North Korea; 3) The terms related to the corn as the primary crop for the North's food production policy occupied relatively a large proportion of the assembled terms; 4) Chinese-and foreign-origin terms seemingly modified through the North's word purification project were found in the various different categories; 5) Some terms were difficult to understand without special interpretation; 6) There were terms related to the agriculture which were obsolete in the South; and 7) In the South's Home Economics textbooks there were a number of the dietary life policy terms of South Korea and foreign-origin terms. It is hopeful that this study may contribute to the mutual understanding in the field of the dietary life for the South and North Korean youths in spite of the language bifurcation due to the South-North separation.

  • Background: Vocabularies originating from Chinese characters constitute an important common factor in the medical terminologies used 3 eastern Asian countries; Korea, China and Japan. This study was performed to comparatively analyze the medical terminologies of these 3 countries in the field of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and; thereby, facilitate further understanding among the 3 medical societies. Material and Method: A total of 129 English terms (core 85 and related 44) in the field of CPB were selected and translated into each country's official terminology, with help from Seoul National University Hospital (Korea), Tokyo Michi Memorial Hospital(Japan), and Yanbian Welfare Hospital and Harbin Children Hospital (China). Dictionaries and CPB textbooks were also cited. In addition to the official terminology used in each country, the frequency of use of English terms in a clinical setting was also analyzed. Result and Conclusion: Among the 129 terms, 28 (21.7%) were identical between the 3 countries, as based on the Chinese characters. 86 terms were identical between only two countries, mostly between Korea and Japan. As a result, the identity rate in CPB terminology between Korea and Japan was 86.8%; whereas, between Korea and China and between Japan and China the rates were both 24.8%. The frequency of use of English terms in clinical practices was much higher in Korea and Japan than in China. Despite some inherent limitations involved in the analysis, this study can be a meaningful foundation in facilitating mutual understanding between the medical societies of these 3 eastern Asian countries.
