  • The aim of this study was to analyze the levels of learners' participation and interactions both quantitatively and qualitatively based on the learners' choices of topic patterns in a process of online debate of a general subject and to explore the effects in order to suggest the ways for activating online debates. For this, it quantitatively analyzed the messages and the patterns in the online debate boards and supplementally implemented a post survey in order to investigate the participants' recognition on the factors of the learners' interactions and the effects. The given topic patterns were 'the presentation of one's opinion' and 'the presentation of pros and cons.' As a result of the analysis, the participating degree was higher in the pattern of 'the presentation of one's opinion' apart from the previous study. This study surveyed and, based on the result, it proposed the teachers should refer to the participants' tendency in advance. Also, it presented the deeper meanings on the interactions extracted by the results of the survey. The learners showed the strong dependence on the teacher' lectures or his materials and a variety of interactions with diverse objects. Besides, it is revealed that debates are helpful factors for enhancing learners' argumentative thinking, writing skills, and the knowledge about the subject in terms of the participants' recognition. Based on the findings, this study emphasized the teachers' educational roles and suggested the educational effects of the online debates in each class should be activated in this era of distance education.

  • This study developed a chatbot for first-year high school students, employing open-source software and the Korean Sentence-BERT model for AI-powered document classification. The chatbot utilizes the Sentence-BERT model to find the six most similar Q&A pairs to a student's query and presents them in a carousel format. The initial dataset, built from online resources, was refined and expanded based on student feedback and usability throughout over the operational period. By the end of the 2023 academic year, the chatbot integrated a total of 30,819 datasets and recorded 3,457 student interactions. Analysis revealed students' inclination to use the chatbot when prompted by teachers during classes and primarily during self-study sessions after school, with an average of 2.1 to 2.2 inquiries per session, mostly via mobile phones. Text mining identified student input terms encompassing not only science-related queries but also aspects of school life such as assessment scope. Topic modeling using BERTopic, based on Sentence-BERT, categorized 88% of student questions into 35 topics, shedding light on common student interests. A year-end survey confirmed the efficacy of the carousel format and the chatbot's role in addressing curiosities beyond integrated science learning objectives. This study underscores the importance of developing chatbots tailored for student use in public education and highlights their educational potential through long-term usage analysis.

  • In this study, mathematics education program was developed for the foreign students who entered the science and engineering college of Korea in order to improve their basic competency and to prevent dropouts. It is applied to 5 Chinese students, 4 male students and 1 female student. Three students are majoring in engineering college and two students are majoring in natural science college. Before applying the mathematics education program to foreign students, most students did not draw a graph of the 'irrational function' and the 'exponential function' and did not understand the concept of the 'limit' at all. However, after applying the mathematics program, all foreign students were able to draw graphs of the various function and the limit values were calculated accurately. Through the results of this study, the researcher proposes some of the following. When developing mathematics education programs for foreign students, it is very important to develop teaching materials suitable for their level. Textbook developers need to select and organize contents that are essential for learning in university mathematics and to present mathematical concepts and examples considering the Korean language level of foreign students. Moreover, it will be necessary to try to present mathematical terms commonly used in Korea in their native language or English.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze some Korean elementary pre-service teachers' Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT). For this purpose, we selected the MKT items on number and operations which were adapted for Korean in-service teachers by Lee(2011). The survey consisting of those items was administered to 76 Korean elementary pre-service teachers at Teachers College, J University. The results are the following: First, the respondents, elementary pre-service teachers, showed that the preference for the MKT items was very affirmative, but the percentages of correct answers to the MKT items weren't generally high. Second, the preference for the instructional consultation by experienced teachers was very affirmative. Third, the percentages of correct answers to KCS, SCK, CCK and KCT were 70.13%, 55.71%, 43.87% and 29.27%, respectively. Fourth, the percentages of correct answers to type 5, 6, and 7 were more than 60%, but those of correct answers to type 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 were less than 60%. This means we need to strengthen type 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 in education of elementary mathematics subject at Teachers College of J University.

  • Current computer education is difficult to educate basic concepts and principals of the computer science because the 7th curriculum of computer education is focused on the application of software. According to the ACM K-12 report about the computer science education model, current computer education is taking the wrong way and we should put the highly priority on the education of the fundamentals through programming languages for a better computer education oriented to the computer science. This paper introduces a new object-oriented educational programming language "Dolittle". The design principals of Dolittle are simple syntax of Korean, incremental programming, text based programming, aliasing of function, and object-oriented programming. Being applied to middle school classes, we can confirm that Dolittle is easy to learn, and gives rise to high interest and keeps interest through a course, and also is of great practical use in class for programming novice.

  • Recently, with the development of virtual and augmented reality technology, metaverse is emerging as a new paradigm that will lead the next-generation internet era, and social and economic activities are spreading around the game, entertainment, music, and content industries. Moreover, as non-face-to-face conversion accelerated after the outbreak of COVID-19, lifestyles and industrial sites are becoming untact and further rapidly becoming a metaverse. In particular, the application of metaverse to the education field is attracting attention because realistic classes using real-time voice conversations using avatars, 3D objects, and 360-degree images can increase immersion and overcome the limitations of distance education. This study examines the concept of metaverse and examines that education using metaverse can be an alternative that can increase the efficiency of education in the non-face-to-face era. In particular, it shows that it is effective in language education and suggests an actual metaverse-based Korea language education program.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze some Korean elementary pre-service teachers' Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT) and compare the results with those obtained by Kwon, Nam, & Kim(2009), so that we can provide some suggestions to improve education of elementary mathematics subject at Korean teachers colleges. For this purpose, we selected the MKT items on number and operations which were adapted for Korean in-service teachers by Kwon et al. The survey consisting of those items was administered to 88 Korean elementary pre-service teachers at teachers college, J University. The results are the following: First, the respondents, elementary pre-service teachers, showed that they already had a sufficient amount of Content Knowledge(CK) on number and operations, but that their level of Knowledge of Content and Students(KCS) was insufficient. This means we need to strengthen our students' KCS in education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges. Second, there was a strong correlation, in both CK and KCS, of item difficulty felt by the respondents with that by the Kwon et al's in-service teachers. Third, although the respondents valued the MKT items more than the above-mentioned elementary in-service teachers, about 70% of them said the items were never learned at their college. Furthermore, they had different opinions on some of the items from their counterparts'. The suggestions we get here are we need to first consider the results in improving education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges and second develop MKT items suitable for the situation of Korean schools and curriculums in order to obtain exact estimations of Korean elementary pre-service teachers' MKT.

  • The aim of this study is to consider the possibility of learning polite expressions of English using the mobile application Naver Band. To improve communicative competence, students need to develop sociolinguistic competence as well as grammatical and discourse competence. To be accordant to social context, the roles of the participants, and the purpose of the interaction, students have to make an appropriate utterance. When a hearer has a higher social status and is older than a speaker, or have low levels of familiarity, Korean native speaker tends to use polite expressions. Students need to learn polite expressions of English because English has a different honorific system from Korean. To realize the characteristics and function of polite language is one thing, but to learn it in a real classroom is another. This study attempts to apply the use of a mobile application, which is considered a user-friendly tool for students, into learning polite language using the UK historical drama, Downton Abbey. Two tests were administered to an experimental group that used the mobile application and a control group that used group work. The results of the two tests show that the use of the mobile application has a positive effect on learning polite expressions and is effective as an after-school activity. In an open-ended questionnaire, students tend to identify polite expressions as superior or high-level language forms and separate these forms from practical expressions. It should be noted as well that teachers need to consider instructing in modern English when using a historical drama in the teaching and learning of polite expressions.
