The purpose of this paper is recovery of the profiles of the wave speed and density from the reflection coefficients of the continuously layered acoustic medium with depth dependent density and wave speed at various angles of incidence. A downward continuation or layer stripping algorithm, which recursively reconstructs the medium in increasing depth and then strips away the effects of the reconstructed portion of the medium, is the method with fewer computations than integral equation procedures. This paper implements an improved downward continuation algorithm that uses reflection data at several angles of incidence and performs a least-squares fitting at each depth. The result is a considerable improvement in performance over the usual downward continuation algorithm.
We formerly reported a new method for the upward continuation of potential field on spherical patch area including Earth's curvature, which has been neglected in most studies on rectangular area with flat Earth assumption. This new method is applicable to downward continuation as well by only assigning corresponding value for the ratio of two radii; $r_2/r_1$, i.e., target radius $r_2$ versus datum radius $r_1$. In addition, the inherent problem of this method due to spherical surface geometry is described, and its one possible remedy is given.
Studies of model potential fields continued upward and downward show differences depending on the method of continuation. Beginning with a magnetic field computed over a buried vertical cylinder, the field was continued to various levels by a method introduced by Henderson (Lagrangian interpolation) and by a spectral method (frequency domain analysis). Resultant fields show (1) no significant differences in upward continued values, (2) in downward continuation, accurate values are obtained with the spectral method over the central part of the anomaly, and (3) accurate values are obtained with Henderson's method on the flanks of the anomaly, while oscillations usually characterize the spectral method in this region. Essentially the same observations are made for derivative calculations. Field oscillations are empirically predicted at levels continued to approximately two-thirds of the depth of the source. Our spectral computer program output yields marked oscillations at one-half of the depth of the source. Henderson's method shows no oscillations at this depth and only minor oscillations at the top of the body (some negative values appear on the flanks of the anomaly). The Henderson output is a smooth field even if continued below the top of the body. These results suggest that the presence of oscillations cannot be used to identify the top of a buried source without careful consideration of the method used to continue the field. Use of the derivative to outline and isolate anomalies must similarly include consideration of the method of calculation.

In general, a crustal geomagnetic (or gravity) anomaly compiled at one altitude can be estimated at a different altitude by continuation using the Fourier transform (FT). However, in case of continuation with a great distance between the two elevations, or, in particular, in case of downward continuation, the estimated anomalies by the FT are likely to be mathematically unstable so that the estimated values are not realistic. To solve this problem, two independently measured magnetic field anomalies at different altitudes, such as aeromagnetic and satellite magnetic observations, are implemented to estimate values at in-between altitude for better understanding and interpreting geophysical and geological features. This ‘'dual continuation’' technique is straightforward in the FT and gives a more realistic estimate in all altitudes when we simulated with a set of prismatic bodies at different altitudes. This implies that we add up another constraint like satellite-based observations on the geopotential field modeling for the non-unique geological and geophysical problems to a conventional Fourier-type continuation technique with a single set of observations.

To obtain the gravity data with consistent quality and good distribution over Korea, to overcome the difficulties in constructing precision geoid from biased distribution of ground data, to resolve the discrepancy between the ground and ocean gravity data, an airborne gravity survey was conducted from Dec. 2008 to Jan. 2009. The data was measured at the average flying height of 3,000m and the data with cross-over error of 2.21mGal is obtained. The geoid constructed using this airborne gravity data shows the range of 9.34 $\sim$ 33.88m. Comparing the geoid with respect to the GPS/levelling data, a precision of 0.145m is obtained. After fitting, the degree of fit to GPS/levelling data was calculated about 5cm. It was found that there exists large biases in the area of south-western and northern part of the peninsular which is considered to be the effect of distorted vertical datum in Korea. Thus, more investigation on vertical datum would be needed in near future.
The crustal structure of the southern part of the Korean peninsula has been investigated based on the results of processing and anlaysis of gravity data. The processing techniques involve i) seperation of regional and residual anomalies by polynomial fittings, ii) power spectral analyses to determine the mean depth to the crustal base, iii) a filtering operation called "high-cut filtering and resampling," and iv) downward continuation to determine the undulation of the crustal base. The Bouguer anomalies show a lineation in the NE-SW direction which is the same as that of most mountains and tectonic lines of this area. The mean crustal depth is found to be 34km. The depth of the crustal base is varying in the estimated range of 26km to 36km with a thinner crust below the east coast than that of the west coast. The relief of the crustal base is appeared to be correlated with the regional surface topography. The linear regression relations computed between elevations and gravity anomalies indicate that the crust of this area seems to be not in perfect isostatic equilibrium but a little undercompensated state.
To solve the problems of distribution and quality on land gravity data, airborne gravity survey was performed in 2008 obtaining the airborne gravity data with accuracy of 1.56mGal. Since airborne gravity data is the obtained at the flight height, it is necessary to convert the airborne gravity data to the surface to combine various gravity data and compute precision geoid. In addition, Stokes' integral radius, Stokes' kernel and the radius of terrain effect computation should be optimally determined to calculate precision geoid. In this study, we made an effort to decide the optimal parameters based on the distribution and the characteristic of gravity data. Then, two geoid models were calculated using the selected parameters and the difference of geoid was calculated with mean of -16.95cm and the standard deviation of ${\pm}8.50cm$. We consider that this difference is due to the distribution and errors on the gravity data. For future work, the study on the effect of geoid with newly obtained land gravity data ship-borne gravity data and GPS/Leveling data should be conducted. Furthermore, the study on the downward continuation and terran effect calculation should be studied in detail for better precision geoid construction.
Purpose: The objective of this retrospective study was to identify predictive factors for the complete pathologic response and tumor downstaging after preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: Between the years 2000 and 2008, 39 patients with newly diagnosed rectal cancer without prior evidence of distant metastasis received preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery. The median radiation dose was 50.4 Gy (range, $45{\sim}59.4\;Gy$)). Thirty-eight patients received concurrent infusional 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin, while one patient received oral capecitabine twice daily during radiotherapy. Results: A complete pathologic response (CR) was demonstrated in 12 of 39 patients (31%), while T-downstaging was observed in 24 of 39 patients (63%). N-downstaging was observed in 18 of 28 patients (64%), with a positive node in the CT scan or ultrasound. Two patients with clinical negative nodes were observed in surgical specimens. The results from a univariate analysis indicated that the tumor circumferential extent was less than 50% (p=0.031). Moreover, the length of the tumor was less than 5 cm (p=0.004), while the post-treatment carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were less than or equal to 3.0 ng/mL (p=0.015) and were significantly associated with high pathologic CR rates. The univariate analysis also indicated that the adenocarcinoma (p=0.045) and radiation dose greater than or equal to 50 Gy (p=0.021) were significantly associated with high T-downstaging, while a radiotherapy duration of less than or equal to 42 days (p=0.018) was significantly associated with N-downstaging. The results from the multivariate analysis indicated that the lesser circumferential extent of the tumor (hazard ratio [HR] 0.150; p=0.028) and shorter tumor length (HR, 0.084; p=0.005) independently predicted a higher pathologic CR. The multivariate analysis also indicated that a higher radiation dose was significantly associated with higher T-downstaging (HR, 0.115; p=0.025), while the shorter duration of radiotherapy was significantly associated with higher N-downstaging (HR, 0.028; p=0.010). Conclusion: The circumferential extent of the tumor and its length was a predictor for the pathologic CR, while radiation dose and duration of radiotherapy were predictors for tumor downstaging. Hence, these factors may be used to predict outcomes for patients and to develop further treatment guidelines for high-risk patients.
