  • This paper considers two aspects of the wooden chamber tombs with stone mound that were constructed in Wolseong North Burial Ground, in Gyeongju: tomb form and the group tomb complex. The basic unit of a wooden chamber tomb with stone mound consisted of a single round mound, covered with an additional earthen layer and surrounded by a circle of protective stones, within which a single wooden chamber was located. The form of a wooden chamber tomb with stone mound could therefore 1) be round, consisting of a single tomb unit, 2) consist of two or more attached tomb units, 3) or consist of multiple attached chambers in a single mound. The single tomb contained the burial of a single individual, and the attached tomb contained two or more individuals who were blood relations or connected by marriage. Multiple attached chambers tombs usually consisted of wooden chamber burials of the lowest rank, and have only been identified in the royal burial area of Wolseong North Burial Ground. At the Jjoksaem Area of Wolseong North Burial Ground, which is currently, under investigation, tombs have been found in small clusters along the slightly raised ground. This is likely the result of small groups of kin relations, upon selecting points along the slightly raised ground as their burial area, having constructed midsized and large single tombs and attached tombs along the axis of the slightly raised ground, which were then surrounded by smaller 'satellite' tombs. It is through this process that the tomb complex of the different groups came to be formed. The tombs of the royal burial area of Wolseong North Burial Ground, including the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, also formed group tomb complexes. Forming the centers of the group tomb complexes of the royal tomb area were huge individual round tombs where the Maripgan rulers were laid to rest or a gourd-shaped dual mound tomb, which was the final resting place of the king and his queen consort. These central tombs were surrounded by large and smaller tombs. Of the individuals that were buried in the group tomb complexes, there would have been individuals that were of equal status or social position, such as husbands and wives or blood relations, but it is unlikely that all of the buried individuals were related by blood, given the significant difference in the sizes of the tombs. It is likely that the individuals buried in the lower ranked tombs included in the group tomb complexes were 'dependents' of the deceased of the central tomb and his or her direct family who maintained a subservient relationship. Such tomb forms and group tomb complexes that can be observed amongst the wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds of Wolseong North Burial Ground provide insights into the nature of the social groups of the Silla center during the Maripgan Period. It is hoped that future studies undertaking a more detailed analysis of the data may make further contributions to unveiling the various aspects of Silla society.

  • Some factors had influence upon the grotesque image formation expressed in fashion: for instance, thanatos, religions, fin de siecle (end of the century), the aesthetics of ugliness, subculture group's resistance and technology development, etc. Those factors have formed a grotesque while exchanging influence each other, and have following features: First, the thanatos, which is destructive and aggressive instinct of the inner world of human being, creates frightening object and motif to form the images of grotesque. Second, from religious point of view, the church made the Devil a tool for maintenance of power: They manipulated physical body and give a damage to it to sublimate it in holy existence, so that they could feel catharsis. Third, there was fin de siecle (end of the century) to let people have negative life attitude, such as uneasiness on following century, eschatology, skepticism and nihilism, etc. Fourth, the ugliness having unpleasantness and disharmony occupies governing position when our society becomes corrupted and uneasy, and the aesthetics of ugliness discloses the inconsistency of ideal and beautiful life in the grotesque images. Fifth, subculture groups, i.e., the lower classes, homosexual and the youth's group, etc, form the grotesque images by political and ideological resistance, complaints and specific identity, etc concerning governing culture keeping traditional ethics consciousness. Sixth, recent technology development has destroyed a boundary between human being and machinery, and bio-technology development has created transplant operation, plastic operation and other human body transformation operations, and genome research, etc has raised human being's identity.

Based on these results, this study suggests the direction for improving technology & home economics textbook. We set up the object of multicultural education in home economics as creating the new culture through developing multicultural ability by critical thinking. The distribution analysis of multicultural contents of six kinds of technology & home economics textbook resulted that most of contents are assigned to 'knowledge section'. And 'personal relationship and group function' holds the highest ratio among the sub-sections of 'function section'. The 'value section' shows even distribution in its sub-sections. Most of textbooks contain characteristics of Korean traditional culture and necessary value in multicultural society. But, there are lack of contents about the way of communication with other cultures and coexist with diverse cultures. When we develops new textbook hereafter, it is necessary to contain the contents about which can help to understand and respect diverse culture through the egalitarian perspective and, by extension, which can make students think critically about the attitude, values, environment and way of live together with multicultural members in society. From now on Home Economics education will help the students who live in multicultural society to be understand about the differences in diverse culture and to create a desirable culture through the critical thinking as well.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of psychosocial factors related to functional dyspepsia(FD) and their effects on quality of life(QOL) in firefighters. Methods : This study examined data collected from 1,217 firefighters. We measured psychological symptoms by Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire(GAD-7), Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS), Ways of Coping checklist(WCCL), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale(RSES) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale abbreviated version(WHOQOL-BREF). Chi-square test, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation test, logistic regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were used as statistical analysis methods. Results : For the group with FD, the male participants showed significantly higher frequency(p=0.006) compared to the female participants. The group with FD had higher scores for depressive symptoms(p<.001), anxiety (p<.001), and occupational stress(p<.001), and did lower scores for self-esteem(p=.008), quality of life(p<.001) than those without FD. The FD risk was higher in the following KOSS subcategories: job demand(OR 1.94, 95% CI : 1.29-2.93), lack of reward(OR 2.47, 95% CI : 1.61-3.81), and occupational climate(OR 1.51, 95% CI : 1.01-2.24). In the hierarchical regression analysis, QOL was best predicted by depressive symptoms, self-esteem, and occupational stress. Three predictive variables above accounts for 42.0% variance explained of total variance. Conclusions : The psychosocial factors showed significant effects on FD, and predictive variables for QOL were identified based on regression analysis. The results suggest that the psychiatric approach should be accompanied with medical approach in future FD assessment.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in men's thinking and attitude on prostitution and gender based on the previous experience of buying sex. It was an exploratory survey for planning future studies and movements for changing a way of thinking in relation to prostitution. A total of 1328 male adults(above 19 years) completed a questionnaire consisting of general thinking of buying sex, tolerance limit of sexual behavior, and sex role egalitarianism. The respondents answered differently in the probability of paying for sex in future and the way how to get a sex information according to the previous experience of buying sex. Those respondents who had paid for sex, had higher scores on three types of sex attitude measures than those who did not. The previous experience of buying sex was significantly correlated with sub-factors of buying sex, tolerance limit of sexual behavior, and sex role egalitarianism except for the sub-factor on recognizing a sex worker as a victim (factor 4 of buying sex). These results suggest that men who had paid for sex had more traditional gender-stereotypes and attitudes. Implications and limitations of this study were discussed in a feminist perspective.

  • This study investigates how Korean children and adolescents perceive their parents using the indigenous psychological approach. An open-ended questionnaire was developed by the first two authors to investigate reasons why children and adolescents feel grateful, respect, indebted, close, conflict, and distance with their parents. A total of 763 participants (212 grade three students, 267 grade eight students, and 284 grade eleven students) completed the questionnaire. The results can be summarized into three main points. First, the vast majority of children and adolescents feel grateful, respect, and indebted to their parents. They feel grateful, respect and indebted for the sacrifice and suffering they experience looking after the family. Moreover, they respects their parents because of their sincerity, blood relationship, benevolence, guidance and educational support. They feel indebted since they did not obey them, were not able to meet their expectations, and were not diligent in their schoolwork. They felt especially close to their mother. The conflict they felt was due to generational gap and in their academic performance. Second, age affects how they perceive their parents. The parent-child conflict increases with age. The feeling of indebtedness also increase with age. However, the feeling of gratefulness and respects decreases with age. The feeling of closeness with father also decreases with age. Third, socio-economic status and educational achievement of children and adolescent affect the perception of their parents. Those with higher academic grade and socio-economic status are more likely to feel respect and indebtedness and less likely to feel conflict and distance.

  • This study validated and investigated the psychological properties of the Korean version of Everyday Ageism Scale to measure subtle ageism in day-to day lives. A total of 498 adults aged 60 and above participated in this study, which involved measuring the everyday ageism scale, experiences of elderly discrimination, self-perception of aging scale, depression (SCL-90R), and satisfaction with life scale. The sample was randomly divided into two groups.Tthe first group(n=198) used for exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis, and the second group(n=300) was used for confirmatory factor analysis and validity testing. As a result, if was confirmed that K-EAS consist of 10 items and 3 dimensions (i.e., exposure to ageist messages, ageism in interpersonal interactions, and internalized ageism), consistent with the original scale. K-EAS demonstrated good internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and incremental validity. In specific, ageism in interpersonal interactions and internalized ageism were correlated with experiences of elderly discrimination, negative self-perceptions of aging, and depression. However, ageism in interpersonal interactions and internalized ageism were negatively correlated with positive self-perceptions of aging and satisfaction with life. Also, the K-EAS provided additional explanation of depression even when excluding the effect of experiences of elderly discrimination. The result confirme that K-EAS is reliable and valid. The implication and limitations of this study, as well as suggestions for the use of K-EAS and future research, were discussed.

  • The study is for tracing the mutational process, considering the transformational process of wooden chamber tombs in Gyoungju region during 2~6 century. In addition, class features and the meaning of tombs were studied. First of all, the wooden chamber tombs were classified into 10 different styles(1A~IVC), based on the filling materials, the ways of structure, and the structure of burial chamber. There were only one or two tombs that belongs to the highest classes 'Ga'~'Da' in each period, which has the numeral features. Furthermore, the styles of the central wooden chamber tombs according to the period and the region have distinctive features and have changed so far. It shows that there are the rank among the tombs in the regions. In other words, regarding the ranks of the class 'Ga'~'Cha', there were strict rules and the limitations on the size of the tombs and the number and the quality of the burial relics. It means that the inner-outer size or the structure of the tombs and the number, quality of the burial goods depended on the buried person's birth or social classes, or achievements. Based on Shila social classes, the class 'Ga' tombs were for the highest classes when considered the size, burial relics, and the quality. The class 'Na' and 'Da' tombs were for the higher classes, 'Ma' for middle classes, 'Ba', 'Sa' for lower classes. In addition, 'Ah', 'Ja' tombs were for higher commoner, 'Cha' for lower commoner. Thus, class 'Ga'~'Sa' is the leading class of Shila.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the acceptance and interpretation of pop musician's image in the Korean youth subculture, Fan Costume play(Fancos). Fancos subculture took the most active attitude to accepts of the pop musician's image and therefore was assumed to have various and differential acceptance aspects. The ethnographic method was used in order to approach more closely from their point of view. The cultural activity of Fancos subculture was imitation and reappearance of pop musician's appearance. Actually Fancos is a kind of fan-culture which idolized Korean pop music star. The acceptance of musician's appearance in Fancos is found out in two aspects. One is passive acceptance aspects that inforces conformity of star fashion and follows servilely ideal body image which promoted by cultural industry. The other is unique acceptance aspects that Fancos members interpret the musician's image in their own way. Those members experience pleasure through their own meaning. And homology of their appearance makes a distinction between of themselves from other youth and intensifies their group identity. As above analyzed, Fancos subculture has differential acceptance of pop music star's image comparing to other youth and even their stylistic appearance reflects not only their fandom but also their own meaning. Consequently, pop musician's image as a popular cultural text is accepted not equal to all populace but dissimilar along with contexts and trails of the acceptance group.
