  • The development of ICT has led to changes in the pattern and the meaning of work and requires restructuring of the existing social security system, which was established chiefly for the wage workers in the industrial economy. However, while economic activities within the digital platform markets are different from industrial labour, there is still a lack of discussion on what social problems platform workers can face and how to cope with them. As a comprehensive sketch of economic activities in platform economy, this study identifies the types of platform workers and analyses three characteristics of their economic activities - flexibility, virtuality, and connectivity. It then examines what social risks can be derived form the three characteristics. This research lastly suggests alternative social safety nets and policies to alleviates the social risks and problems that platform workers may face in the digital society.

The change in the family caused by the technological change of the 4th industrial revolution is remarkable in terms of socialization of housework. In this study, the socialization of housework, which is accelerating in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, was examined focusing on the change in the aspect of "household service" through the "platform". Since 2015, when technological changes in the 4th industrial revolution began to decline, related newspaper articles were extracted for daily and economic newspapers nationwide and analyzed big data. The results of big data analysis show that the platform economy using the 4th industrial revolution technology is rapidly spreading the socialization of housework not only at the business level but also at the public policy level. It has been confirmed that support for household services through the platform is growing into a new business area of companies, and at the public policy level, it is being treated as an important policy task in supporting work-family balance or responding to infectious diseases. This study is meaningful in that it provided an opportunity to reflect on the roles and tasks of the family, market, and state for housework and care in the future through changes in housework and care caused by the 4th industrial revolution technology.

  • Purpose In online delivery platforms, platform workers are required to perform both platform labor, which is compensated with immediate wages, and shadow work which is a kind of unpaid job to support the platform labor. Thus, the objective of this study is to empirically examine how platform workers' platform labor and shadow work affect their job burnout and their turnover intention in the online delivery platform context. Design/methodology/approach This study developed a research model by employing platform labor and shadow work to influence job burnout and turnover intention. This study also tested the model by partial least square techniques after collecting 169 cross-sectional data from food delivery riders in Korea. Findings This study found that both platform labor and shadow work affected platform workers' job burnout. In addition, the results showed that shadow work influenced their turnover intention while platform labor did not affect the turnover intention. Based on the results, this study contributed to relevant researchers who are interested in platform contexts by offering measurable constructs on platform labor and shadow work. In addition, this study could provide practitioners with practical implications on managing platform workers.

  • In February 2020, Gyeonggi-do paid the world's first Data Dividend to local residents of Gyeonggi Province who produced data using local currency. Currently, Data Dividend is being paid to consumers who have produced data, but this paper studied the expansion of Data Dividend qualifications according to the contribution to creating added value. First, it raised the question of whether it is right for the recipient of Data Dividend to have only the consumers who produced the data. Second, by analyzing the four elements of data valuation criteria that influenced the creation of added value identified the objects that influence the creation of added value. The 4 factors were divided into productivity, effectiveness, concreteness, and usability, and the objects corresponding to each factor were analyzed. Accordingly, it was determined whether platform workers contributed to the creation of added value. In conclusion, it was confirmed that not only consumers, who were the first data producers, but also platform workers who contributed to the concreteness of data valuation to create added value can qualify for Data Dividend. Since this paper focuses on the necessity of data allocation centered on platform workers among the objects, the validity of objects that influence added value other than platform workers are excluded.
