  • Intercomparison between eight radiative transfer codes used for the studies of COMS (Communications, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) in Korea was performed under pure molecular, i.e., Rayleigh atmospheres in four shortwave fluxes: 1) direct solar irradiance at the surface, 2) diffuse irradiance at the surface, 3) diffuse upward flux at the surface, and 4) diffuse upward flux at the top of the atmosphere. The result (hereafter called the H15) from Halthore et al.'s study (2005) which intercompared and averaged 15 codes was used as a benchmark to examine the COMS models. Uncertainty of the seven COMS models except STREAMER was ${\pm}4%$ with respect to the H15, comparable with ${\pm}3%$ of Halthore et al.'s (2005). The uncertainty increased under a large $SZA=75^{\circ}$. The SBDART model generally agreed with the H15 better than the 6S model, but both models in the shortwave infrared region were equally good. The direct solar irradiance fluxes at the surface, computed by the SBDARTs of four different users, were different showing a relative error of 1.4% $(12.1Wm^{-2})$. This reason was partially due to differently installing the wavelength resolution in the flux integration. This study may be useful for selecting the optimum model in the shortwave region.

  • For the success of dental implant, accurate radiographic evaluation is prerequisite for planning the location of the osseointegrated implants and avoiding injury to vital structures. CT/MPR(computed tomography/multiplanar reformation) shows improved visualization of inferior alveolar canal. In order to obtain cross-sectional images parallel to the teeth, the occlusal plane is used to orientate for the axial plane. If the direction of axial plane is not parallel to the occlusal plane, the reformatted cross-sectional scans will be oblique to the planned fixture direction and will not show the actual dimension of the planned fixture's location. If the available bone height which measured in the cross-sectional view is much greater than the actual available bone height, penetration of canal may occur. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of the axial plane to measurement of available bone height for dental implant in computed tomography of the mandible. 40 patients who had made radiographic stents and had taken CT were selected. The sites that were included in the study were 45 molar regions. In the central panoramic scan, the length from alveolar crest to superior border of inferior alveolar canal(available bone height, ABH) was measured in direction of reformatted cross-sectional plane(uncorrected ABH). Then, length from alveolar crest to superior border of canal was measured in direction of stent(corrected ABH). The angle between uncorrected ABH and corrected ABH was measured. From each ABH, available fixture length was decided by $Br{{\aa}}nemark$ system. The results were following ; the difference between two ABHs was statistically significant in both first and second molar(p< 0.01). The percentage of difference more than 1 mm was 8.7% in first molar and 15.5% in second molar. The percentage of difference more than 2 mm was 2.0% in first molar and 6.6% in second molar. The maximum value of difference was 2.5 mm in first molar and 2.2 mm in second molar. The correlations between difference of 2 ABHs and angle was positive correlations in both first and second molar. The correlation coefficient was 0.534 in first molar and 0.728 in second molar. The second molar has a stronger positive correlation. The percentage of disagreement between 2 fixture lengths from two ABHs was 24.4% in first molar and 28.9% in second molar.

  • It is a hot issue to determine the spatial location and shape of tumor boundary in fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT). We could get consecutive transaxial plane images from the phantom (paraffin) and 4 patients with brain tumor using helical computed tomography(HCT). K-means classification algorithm was adjusted to change raw data pixel value in CT images into classified average pixel value. The classified images consists of 5 regions that ate tumor region (TR), normal region (NR), combination region (CR), uncommitted region (UR) and artifact region (AR). The major concern was how to separate the normal region from tumor region in the combination area. Relative average deviation analysis was adjusted to alter average pixel values of 5 regions into 2 regions of normal and tumor region to define maximum point among average deviation pixel values. And then we drawn gross tumor volume (GTV) boundary by connecting maximum points in images using semi-automatic contour method by IDL(Interactive Data Language) program. The error limit of the ROI boundary in homogeneous phantom is estimated within ${\pm}1%$. In case of 4 patients, we could confirm that the tumor lesions described by physician and the lesions described automatically by the K-mean classification algorithm and relative average deviation analyses were similar. These methods can make uncertain boundary between normal and tumor region into clear boundary. Therefore it will be useful in the CT images-based treatment planning especially to use above procedure apply prescribed method when CT images intermittently fail to visualize tumor volume comparing to MRI images.

  • Background: Surveillance of TB drug resistance (DR) is essential for providing information on the magnitude and trends in resistance, for developing treatment guidelines and for monitoring the effect of interventions. Up to now national surveys of drug resistance of M. tuberculosis have been conducted four times since 1994 among patients registered at health centers. The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of primary drug resistance among new cases identified in private sector, and to compare it with the previous national drug resistance surveys. Methods: The study collected results of drug susceptibility testing (DST) performed at the Korean Institute of Tuberculosis by the request of private sector from January 2003 to December 2005, and then finally selected new cases for the analysis from the database of Korean TB Surveillance (KTBS) by matching patients' name and social identification numbers. Results: Of the 5,132 new patients included in the study, 689 (13.4%) patients were found to have drug resistance at least one drug, 530 patients (10.3%) were isoniazid resistant, 195 patients (3.8%) were multi-drug resistant (MDR), and 21 patients (0.4%) were extensively drug resistant (XDR). The rate of drug resistance tended to decrease annually but it was not statistically significant. When compared with previous national DR surveys in 2003 and in 2004 respectively, they were not significantly different. Conclusion: The prevalence of DR among new cases managed in the private sector did not show significant difference from that of new patients registered in the public sector in the same year.

  • The present study evaluated the validation method for isoflavone contents of fermented soybean extracts by bioconversion as well as their antioxidant activities. Our results show that the total isoflavone contents of non-fermented and fermented soybean extract ranged between 119.8 to $637.7{\mu}g/g$ and between 567.3 to $2,074.6{\mu}g/g$, respectively. Moreover, fermented soybean extracts had higher contents of isoflavone aglycones, including daidzein, glycitein, and genistein than non-fermented soybean extracts as well as lower contents of isoflavone glucosides such as daidzin, glycitin, and genistin. FRAP and ORAC values ranged between 0.15 to 0.22 and between 195.24 to $753.79{\mu}M$ Trolox equivalents/g in non-fermented and fermented soybean extracts, respectively. These results indicate that fermented soybean extracts had higher total isoflavone contents and antioxidant activities than non-fermented soybean extracts. Bioconversion process in this study may have the potential to produce isoflavone-enriched natural antioxidant agents with high added value from soybean matrices.

  • This study was conducted to develope a new type of ready-to-eat smoked Sebastes schlegeli product with high acceptability and extended shelf-life. A Sebastes schlegeli was salted at 4% salt concentration for 6 hr at $4^{\circ}C$. The cold smoking conditions for the salted Sebastes schlegeli consisted of drying for 2 hr at $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ followed by smoking for 2 hr at $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$. The warm smoking conditions for the salted Sebastes schlegeli consisted of drying for 2 hr at $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$, smoking for 2 hr at $22{\sim}24^{\circ}C$, and smoking again for 30 min at $47{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The rancidity of the smoked Sebastes schlegeli did not change after 1 year storage at $-20^{\circ}C$ by monitoring the iodine value, peroxide value, and acid value. The number of viable cells in the cold and warm smoked samples were counted as $7.4{\times}10^5$ and $6.2{times}10^5$ CFU/g, respectively. Viable cells were not detected after 1 year of storage at $-20^{\circ}C$. The sensory evaluations of the processed Sebastes schlegeli showed that elastic texture increased with smoking as compared to with salting. There were no significant differences between cold and warm smoking in terms of sweetness, elastic texture, color, and smoke flavor. However, for overall acceptability, preference were in the oder of cold smoked, warm smoked, and salted.

  • A few enzymeimmunoassay (EfA) for testosterone (T) have been reported but was not suitable for all biological samples. The present study was designed to develop a rapid, ultrasensitive EIA and to apply this technique for study the physiological changes of T in biological samples. Saliva samples were collected at 06:00~09:00 hour during one menstrual cycle from 18 normally menstruating women and on 09:00~10:00 hour from 20 normal men. The present study shows an established EIA for testosterone, using horseradish peroxidase (HRP), which was covalently bonded to testosterone-3-carboxymethyloxime (T-3-CMO). One batch of T-antisera was also covalently linked to microcrystalline cellulose particles by a mixed anhydride method in order to facilitate separation of bound and free steroids. The established EIA was validated in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, specificity, precisions etc., comparing with conventional radioimmunoassay. The sensitivity of the established EIA was less than 25 pg/tube. The correlation coefficients between the expected T-values and observed T-values measured by EIA or RIA were r=0.985 and r=0.941 respectively. The cross reactivity of antiserum in EIA was a little higher than that of RIA, especially by 5 ${\alpha}$-DHT. The intra- and inter-assay precisions of the present EIA were similar to those of RIA. The present study also demonstrates that the normal T-values in saliva of Korean male & female samples are 265.65${\pm}$15.80 pmol/l and 109.74${\pm}$ 12.01 pmol/l, respectively. The present EIA seems to be established and suitable for use in the endocrinological studies. The advantages of this EIA system also might make the present T-EIA an ideal procedure for use in a routine assay of ordinary laboratory with a conventional spectrophotometer.

  • Data from 122 pumping tests were obtained from 100 boreholes in granites, volcanic rocks, metamorphic rocks, and Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks, and then were analyzed using AQTESOLV. Results from 86 of the 122 tests ($71\%$) have an analytical solution corresponding to Theis (1935), Cooper-Jacob (1946), Papadopulos-Cooper (1967), Hantush (1962), Moench (1985), or Hantush-Jacob (1955), whereas the remaining 36 results ($29.5\%$) do not correspond to any of the analytical methods. Of the 86 results, only 17 match the Theis and Cooper-Jacob methods, indicating that the basic methods fer pumping test analysis are useful far only $14\%$ of the total data. This suggests that analytical solutions derived using leaky boundary conditions are appropriate for the analysis of pumping test data in fractured aquifers in this study. Furthermore, the results show the importance of carefully selecting an appropriate model for the analysis of pumping test data. Results from the 122 pumping tests were also analyzed using the GRF model. Using the Barker method, the results show that 77 of the 122 tests ($63\%$) have dimensions ranging between 1.1-2.9. Of these 77 solutions, ($39(44.2{\%})$) have a fractional dimension of 1.1-1.9, ($26(6.5{\%})$) show 2-dimensional radial flow also applicable to the Theis method, and ($38(49.3{\%})$) have dimensions of 2.1-2.9. The results show that groundwater flows according to a fractional flow dimension in fractured aquifers.

  • This study was conducted to determine the content of heavy metals in canned foods and soft drinks available on the Korean markets. Trace metals (Pb, Cr, Cd, and Sn) were detected in 24 kinds, 120 samples by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The average concentration of heavy metals in canned foods was in the order of Sn (6.930 ppm)>Cr (0.050 ppm)>Pb (0.030 ppm)>Cd (0.008 ppm), which was the same order in soft drinks as Sn (3.519 ppm)>Cr (0.080 ppm)>Pb (0.024 ppm)>Cd (0.001 ppm). The total contents of heavy metals in canned fruits and fruit juices were relatively higher than those in cans and drinks made of vegetable and fish. It can be supposed that the high acidity owing to the organic acid of fruit itself promotes to extract metals from can materials, and although fish usually contains more heavy metals than vegetables, canned fish revealed low level because internal organs and most of skin which had more heavy metals than meat were removed throughout canning process. Because processed foods such as canned foods and soft drinks are very popular with the children and adolescence according to the change of life style and eating habit, and the possibility of exposure to heavy metals by the habitual intake of these is increasing simultaneously, it is suggested that more practical study about the process of exposure and the amount in each step is needed fur the assessment of safety.

  • A new type of drinkable yoghurt was prepared to develop a functional yoghurt. Skim milk containing 0.4-1.0%(w/v) water extract of omija(Schizandra chinensis Baillon) was fermented by the mixed strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Streptococcus thermophilus. Quality characteristics of the drinkable yoghurts were evaluated in terms of compositions, keeping-quality(pH, titratable acidity, number of viable cells) and sensory properties. The drinkable yoghurts added with water extract of Schizandra chinensis were composed of 2.92-3.03% protein, 9.98-10.23% lactose, 0.81-1.08% fat, 16.21-16.64% total solid, and 14.57-15.17% solid-not-fat. The L values(brightness) were significantly lower in the yoghurts containing water extract of Schizandra chinensis than that of the control which had no water extract of Schizandra chinensis, while the a values(redness) and b values(yellowness) were significantly higher than those of the control. The pH, titratable acidity and number of viable cells of the lactic acid bacteria of all yoghurts were not changed during the storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, while the pH and titratable acidity were remarkedly changed during the yoghurts stored at 20$^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The drinkable yoghurts containing 0.4%(w/v) water extract of Schizandra chinensis added 15%(w/v) oligosaccharide, or 0.6%(w/v) water extract of Schizandra chinensis added 20%(w/v) oligosaccharide had the highest sensory score in taste and overall acceptability among the treatments. From the results, Schizandra chinensis was a useful natural additive with the bioactive effect by provision of a acceptable physicochemical and sensory properties in the drinkable yoghurt.
