  • In this paper, an investigation was conducted to evaluate the acoustic performance of low height noise barriers installed adjacent to rails; an easy-to-use approximation formula was suggested for the evaluation of insertion loss (IL), instead of using the boundary element method. At first, the acoustic performance of the low height noise barriers was measured in an anechoic chamber using a scaled down model; the overall IL according to the source location was analyzed with the equivalent IL contour line. Using the measurement results obtained from the scaled down model, an approximation formula was suggested for the IL of low height noise barriers having various shapes. Also, the prediction program was validated through a comparison between the actual measurement results in the anechoic chamber and the prediction results. Finally, using the prediction program, an approximation formula for IL was suggested for the low height noise absorption barriers. Considering the frequency characteristics of the noise sources of the train, the absorptive low height noise barriers have a 'ㄱ' type shape, a height of 1.0m, and a length of 0.5m when they are installed on the structure gauge for the train.

  • The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section ($length{\;}{\times}{\;}width$) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 $\textrm{[}45/-45/0/90\textrm{]}_{3s}$, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a $30mm{\;}{\times}{\;}30mm,{\;}50mm{\;}{\times}{\;}50mm,{\;}70mm{\;}{\times}{\;}70mm{\;}and{\;}90mm{\;}{\times}{\;}90mm$ gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.

  • Hydraulic conductivity along rock fracture is mainly dependent on fracture geometries such as orientation, aperture, roughness and connectivity. Therefore, it needs to consider fracture geometries sufficiently on a fracture model for a numerical analysis to calculate permeability coefficient in a fracture. This study performed new type of numerical analysis using a homogenization analysis method to calculate permeability coefficient accurately along single fractures with several fracture models that were considered fracture geometries as much as possible. First of all, fracture roughness and aperture variation due to normal stress applied on a fracture were directly measured under a confocal laser scaning microscope (CLSM). The acquired geometric data were used as input data to construct fracture models for the homogenization analysis (HA). Using the constructed fracture models, the homogenization analysis method can compute permeability coefficient with consideration of material properties both in microscale and in macroscale. The HA is a new type of perturbation theory developed to characterize the behavior of a micro inhomogeneous material with a periodic microstructure. It calculates micro scale permeability coefficient at homogeneous microscale, and then, computes a homogenized permeability coefficient (C-permeability coefficient) at macro scale. Therefore, it is possible to analyze accurate characteristics of permeability reflected with local effect of facture geometry. Several computations of the HA were conducted to prove validity of the HA results compared with the empirical equations of permeability in the previous studies using the constructed 2-D fracture models. The model can be classified into a parallel plate model that has fracture roughness and identical aperture along a fracture. According to the computation results, the conventional C-permeability coefficients have values in the range of the same order or difference of one order from the permeability coefficients calculated by an empirical equation. It means that the HA result is valid to calculate permeability coefficient along a fracture. However, it should be noted that C-permeability coefficient is more accurate result than the preexisting equations of permeability calculation, because the HA considers permeability characteristics of locally inhomogeneous fracture geometries and material properties both in microscale and macroscale.

  • A three-dimensional numerical method based on the Green's integral equation is developed to predict the motion response and drift force in waves for the ocean monitoring facilities. In this method, we use source and doublet distribution, and triangular and rectangular eliments. To eliminate the irregular frequency phenomenon, the method of improved integral equation is applied and the time-mean drift force is calculated by the method of direct pressure integration over the body surface. To conform the validity of the present numerical method, some calculations for the floating sphere are performed and it is shown that the present method provides sufficiently reliable results. As a calculation example for the real facilities, the motion response and the drift force of the vertical cylinder type ocean monitoring buoy with 2.6 m diameter and 3,77 m draft are calculated and discussed. The obtained results of motion response can be used to determine the shape and dimension of the buoy to reduce the motion response, and other data such as the effect of motion reduction due to a damper can be predictable through these motion calculations. Also, the calculation results of drift force can be used in the design procedure of mooring system to predict the maximum wave load acting on the mooring system. The present method has, in principle, no restriction in the application to the arbitrary shape facilities. So, this method can be a robust tool for the design, installation, and operation of various kinds of the floating-type ocean monitoring facilities.

  • The Thermal Prestressing Method for continuous composite girder bridges is a new design and construction method developed to induce initial composite stresses in the concrete slab at negative bending regions. Due to the induced initial stresses, prevention of tensile cracks at the concrete slab, reduction of steel girder section, and reduction of reinforcing bars are possible. Thus, the construction efficiency can be improved and the construction can be made more economical. The method for determining the optimum heating region of the thermal prestressing method has not been established although such method is essential for improving the efficiency of the design process. The trial-and-error method used in previous studies is far from efficient, and a more rational method for computing optimal heating region is required. In this study, an efficient method for determining the optimum heating region in using the thermal prestressing method was developed based on the neural network algorithm, which is widely adopted to pattern recognition, optimization, diagnosis, and estimation problems in various fields. Back-propagation algorithm, commonly used as a learning algorithm in neural network problems, was used for the training of the neural network. Through case studies of two-span and three-span continuous composite girder bridges using the developed procedure, the optimal heating regions were obtained.

  • In ship and of offshore structures, there exist many local panels of various shapes having many kinds of attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For the vibration analysis of panels, analytical methods such as Rayleight-Ritz method or the assumed mode method can be efficiently applied. There have been many studies on the vibration analysis of rectangular panels using the analytical methods but relatively few for arbitrary shape panels. An efficient formulation based on the assumed mode method is presented for the vibration analysis of an arbitrary quadrangular plate having concentrated masses, supporting springs such as pillars and spring-mass systems. In the formulation, the natural coordinate system is used for the efficient treatment of an arbitrary quadrangular shape. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.

  • The present study aims to design an optimized hull shape of a floating pendulum-type wave energy converter(WEC). The purpose of these structure is to improve the performance and stability of the WEC by reducing its motion under operating and survival wave conditions. In this study, motion reduction structures, like restoring and dampling plates were installed on a floating pendulum WEC that has been the subject of previous studies. Restoring plates were installed to increase the restoring force and shift the natural period to a shorter period. Damping plates were installed to shift the natural period to a longer period by increasing the added mass. The effects of the structures were then analyzed under different incident wave conditions. The design parameters for the motion reduction structures were size, shape, and installed position. The wave-induced motion characteristics and performance of the floating pendulum WEC were also investigated numerically. Based on the simulation results, we are able to optimize the motion reduction structure of the WEC, thus improving its efficiency and durability.

  • A reliability based calibration of dynamic load allowance (DLA) of highway bridge is performed by numerical dynamic analysis of various types of bridges taking into account of the road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interaction. A total of 10 simply supported bridges with three girder types in the form of prestressed concrete girder, steel plate girder, and steel box girder is analyzed. The cross sections recommended in "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for the prestressed concrete girder bridges and steel plate girder bridges while the box girder bridges are designed by the LRFD method. Ten sets of road surface roughness for each bridge are generated from power spectral density (PSD) function by assuming the roadway as "Average Road". A three dimensionally modeled 5-axle tractor-trailer with its gross weight the same as that of DB-24 design truck is used in the dynamic analysis. For the finite element modeling of superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. The statistical mean and coefficient of variation of DLA are obtained from a total of 100 DLA results for 10 different bridges with each having 10 sets of road surface roughness. Applying the DLA statistics obtained, the DLA is finally calibrated in a reliability based LRFD format by using the formula developed in the calibration of OHBDC code.

  • In this study, Galerkin scheme and SU/PG scheme of Petrov-Galerkin family were applied to the shallow water equations and a finite element model for shallow water flow was developed. Numerical simulations were conducted in several flumes with convection-dominated flow condition. Flow simulation of channel with slender structure in the water course revealed that Galerkin and SU/PG schemes showed similar results under very low Fr number and Re number condition. However, when the Fr number increased up to 1.58, Galerkin scheme did not converge while SU/PG scheme produced stable solutions after 5 iterations by Newton-Raphson method. For the transcritical flow simulation in diverging channel, the present model predicted the hydraulic jump accurately in terms of the jump location, the depth slope, and the flow depth after jump, and the numerical results showed good agreements with the hydraulic experiments carried out by Khalifa(1980). In the oblique hydraulic jump simulation, in which convection-dominated supercritical flow (Fr=2.74) evolves, Galerkin scheme blew up just after the first iteration of the initial time step. However, SU/PG scheme captured the boundary of oblique hydraulic jump accurately without numerical oscillation. The maximum errors quantified with exact solutions were less than 0.2% in water depth and velocity calculations, and thereby SU/PG scheme predicted the oblique hydraulic jump phenomena more accurately compared with the previous studies (Levin et al., 2006; Ricchiuto et al., 2007).
