In this paper, we design an acoustic meta-material silencer that operates at low frequency to reduce noise in duct. A high refractive index meta-material silencer is demonstrated with a combination of zigzag structured thin waveguide and helmholtz resonator, which reduces the speed of sound. Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis via thermo-viscous acoustic mesh is performed in order to calculate thermo-viscous dissipation in sub-wavelength waveguide. Sound power reflection, transmission and absorption coefficients are obtained utilizing 4-Microphone Method. The results show that cut-off frequency and transmission loss can be controlled through adjusting intervals of the zigzag structures. A wide-band acoustic silencer is also suggested by connecting meta-materials in series or parallel.

The present paper studies the effect of the slope gradient of a fully permeable submerged breakwater using a newly developed numerical model that is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve-Structure (submerged breakwater)-Sand seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D). The developed model was validated through the comparison with an existing experimental data, and further used for various numerical experiments in oder to investigate the complicated hydrodynamics on the varying slope gradient of permeable submerged breakwater. We found an acceptable phenomenon, as we expect intuitively, that reflection and transmission coefficients decrease simultaneously as slope gradient decrease. In addition, the breaking point, the circulation flow and mean vorticity around a submerged breakwater are throughly discussed.

A finite element method is used to simulate interaction of laser-based ultrasounds with surface breaking tracks in elastic media. The laser line source focused on the surface of semi-infinite medium is modeled as a shear dipole in 2-D plane strain finite elements. The shear dipole-finite clement model is found to give correct directivity patterns for generated longitudinal and shear waves. The interaction of surface waves with surface breaking cracks (2-D machined slot) is considered in two ways. Both the source and receiver are fixed with respect to the cracks in the first case, while the source is moving in another case. It is shown that the crack depth tested in the range of 0.3-5.0mm $({\lambda}_R/d=0.21{\sim}3.45)$ can be measured using the corner reflected waves produced by the fixed laser source. The moving laser source is found to cause a large amplitude change of reflected waves near crack, and the crack whose depth is one order lower than the wavelength ran be detected from this change.

Analytical solutions for interaction between seabed and waves such as progressive wave or partial standing wave with arbitrary reflection ratio or standing wave have been developed by many researchers including Lee et al.(2014; 2015a; 2015b; 2015c; 2015d) and Yamamoto et al.(1978). They handled the pore-water pressure as oscillating pore-water pressure and residual pore-water pressure separately and discussed the seabed response on each pore-water pressure. However, based on field observations and laboratory experiments, the oscillating and residual pore-water pressures in the seabed do occur not separately but together at the same time. Therefore, the pore-water pressure should be investigated from a total pore-water pressure point of view. Thus, in this paper, the wave-induced seabed response including liquefaction depth was discussed among oscillating, residual, and total pore-water pressures' point of view according to the variation of wave, seabed, and flow conditions. From the results, in the field of flow with the same direction of progressive wave, the following seabed response has been identified; with increase of flow velocity, the dimensionless oscillating pore-water pressure increases, but the dimensionless residual pore-water pressure decreases, and consequently the dimensionless total pore-water pressure and the dimensionless liquefaction depth decrease.
The authors designed a new technique to measure dielectric constant of a soil media by Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) system and its measurement sensor probe with different length such as 7m, 10cm and 15cm for estimating the variations of dielectric constant. Measurement of dielectric constant of soil material is possible to measure an interference wave generated by between incidence wave and reflection wave which are detected to electro-magnetic wave through the directional coupler at the high frequency range,0.1 to 1.7GHz, by FDR system. The obtained experimental results verified that the technique is very promising for non-destructive and continuous soil volumetric water content measurement monitoring in a laboratory. The relationship between the soil volumetric water content and the dielectric constant of soil media (standard sand) was expressed by a single regression ewe independent of soil texture at a small experimental error. Also the derived regression curve coincided well with that obtained by Topp curve.

A numerical model has been used for the prediction of wave agitations in a harbor which are induced by the intrusion and transformation of incident waves. Based on linear wave theory a mild-slope equation has been used. A partial absorbing boundary condition has been used on solid boundary. Functional has been derived following Chen and Mei(l974)'s technique based on Hybrid Element Method which uses finite discretisation in the inner region and analytical solution of Helmholtz equation in the outer region. Final simultaneous equation has been solved using the Gaussian Elimination Method. Helmholtz natural period and second peak period of seiche in Donghae Harbor coincide very well with the results from numerical calculation. Computed amplification factors show good agreement, especially when the reflection coefficient on solid boundary is 0.99, with those of measurements.

In this paper, TE(transverse electric) scattering problems by a resistive strip grating over grounded dielectric multilayers according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers, and incident angles of a TE plane wave are analyzed by applying the FGMM(Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method) known as a numerical procedure. The induced surface current density is simply expanded in a Fourier series by using the exponential function as a simple function. Generally, the relected power gets increased according as the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers gets increased, the sharp variations of the reflected power are due to resonance effects that take place and were previously called wood's anomallies$^{[7]}$. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the numerical results of normalized reflected power for the uniform resistivity R = 0 as a conductive strip case show in good agreement with those in the existing paper.

The absorption performance of a metal-backed single layered electromagnetic wave absorber is optimized at matching conditions of thickness and frequency indicating the maximum returns loss of incidence electromagnetic wave in the contour map. These matching conditions are obtained by applying the electromagnetic impedance to the transmission line theory, which depend on the complex permeability and complex permittivity of absorber material. The magnetic materials with high permeability can enhance the matching thickness condition to the wide frequency range based on the decrease of permeability with frequency and it can be used as a wideband electromagnetic wave absorber material. Therefore, the magnetic materials with higher saturation magnetization and lower permittivity than NiZn ferrite can be applied to the wideband electromagnetic wave absorber in order to satisfy the newly enforcing the electromagnetic compatibility regulation in the future.

In this study, the minimization of harbor oscillation using permeable breakwater was applied to the actual harbor and investigated an effect of minimization by computer simulation in order to take into account the water quality problems and measures of harbor oscillation by infragravity waves at the same time. The study site is Mukho harbor located at East coast of Korea that harbor oscillation has been occurred frequently. The infragravity waves obtained by analyzing the observed field data for five years focused on the distribution between wave periods of 40 s and 70 s and wave heights in less than 0.1 m was 94% of analyzing data. The target wave periods was 68.0 s. The most effective method of minimization of harbor oscillation by infragravity waves was to install a detached permeable breakwater with transmission coefficient of 0.3 on the outside harbor and replace some area of the vertical wall in the harbor with wave energy dissipating structure to achieve a reflectivity of 0.9 or less. The amplitude reduction rate of this method shown in 27.4%. And the effect of the difference in transmission coefficient of permeable breakwater on the reduction rate of the amplitude was not significant.
