Blade design optimization of QTP-UAV prop-rotor was conducted using ModelCenter(R). Performance efficiency of the blade in hover and forward flight were adopted as the multi-objective function. Required power and pitch link force applied to constraint in each flight mode and limited lower than the value of the baseline blade. Design variables of root chord length of the blade, taper ratio, twist slope, twist angle at 0.5R of the blade, anhedral angle, parabolic coefficient of a tip shape and location of airfoil were used to generate the blade planform. CAMRAD-II, the comprehensive analysis program of rotorcraft, was used for performance analysis of prop-rotor blade in design process. Performance of the optimized blade improved 1.6% of figure of merit in hover and 13.6% of propulsive efficiency in forward flight. Pitch link force also reduced approximately 30% less than that of the baseline blade.

Medical waste management is becoming increasingly important, specifically in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, as hospitals, clinics, quarantine centers, and medical research institutes are generating tons of medical waste every day. Previously, a traditional incineration process was utilized for managing medical waste, but the lack of landfill sites, and accompanying environmental concerns endanger public health. Consequently, an innovative sterilization shredding system was developed to resolve this problem. In this research, we focused on the design and numerical analysis of a shredding system for hazardous and infectious medical waste, to establish its operational performance. The shredding machine's components were modeled in a CAD application, and finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using ABAQUS software. Static, fatigue, and dynamic loading conditions were used to analyze the structural stability of the cutting blade. The blade geometry proved to be effective based on the cutting force applied to shred medical waste. The dynamic stability of the structure was verified using modal analysis. Furthermore, an S-N curve was generated using a high cycle fatigue study, to predict the expected life of the cutting blade. Resultantly, an appropriate shredder system was devised to link with a sterilization unit, which could be beneficial in reducing the volume of medical waste and disposal time, thereof, thus eliminating environmental issues, and potential health hazards.

The comparative study of regression-model-based approximate optimization techniques used in the strength design of an automotive knuckle component that will be under bump and brake loading conditions is carried out. The design problem is formulated such that the cross-sectional sizing variables are determined by minimizing the weight of the knuckle component that is subjected to stresses, deformations, and vibration frequency constraints. The techniques used in the comparative study are sequential approximate optimization (SAO), sequential two-point diagonal quadratic approximate optimization (STDQAO), and approximate optimization based on enhanced moving least squares method (MLSM), such as CF (constraint feasible)-MLSM and Post-MLSM. Commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tools are utilized for the application of SAO and STDQAO. The enhanced MLSM-based approximate optimization techniques are newly developed to ensure constraint feasibility. The results of the approximate optimization techniques are compared with those of actual non-approximate optimization to evaluate their numerical performances.

When structural design of a tall building is conducted, reduction of wind-induced lateral displacement is one of the most important problem. For this purpose, additional dampers and vibration control devices are generally considered. In this process, control performance of additional devices are usually investigated for optimal design without variation of characteristics of a structure. In this study, multi-objective integrated optimization of structure-smart control device is conducted and possibility of reduction of structural resources of a tall building with additional smart damping device has been investigated. To this end, a 60-story diagrid building structure is used as an example structure and artificial wind loads are used for evaluation of wind-induced responses. An MR damper is added to the conventional TMD to develop a smart TMD. Because dynamic responses and the amount of structural material and additional smart damping devices are required to be reduced, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is employed in this study. After numerical simulation, various optimal designs that can satisfy control performance requirement can be obtained by appropriately reducing the amount of structural material and additional smart damping device.
The disturbed state concept (DSC) proposed here is based on the idea that a deforming material element can be treated as a mixture of two constituent parts in the relative intact (Rl) and fully adjusted (FA) states, referred to as reference states. Based on this idea, DSC provides a unified constitutive model for the characteristics of saturated sands under cyclic loading. The model parameters for saturated sands are evaluated by using data from truly triaxial test device, The laboratory test results are also used for the verification of D SC model. In general, the model predictions are found to provide satisfactory correlation with the test results. From the results of this research, it can be stated that the DSC model is capable of characterizing the cyclic behavior of saturated sands under dynamic loading.
In recent years, the subject of remaining life assessment has drawn considerable attention in power plants, where various structural components typically operate at high temperature and pressure. Thus a life prediction methodology accounting for high temperature creep fracture is increasingly needed for the components. Critical defects in such structures are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface crack, and the analysis of which is consequently an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, we first develop an auto mesh generation program for detailed 3-D finite element analyses of axial and circumferential semi-elliptical surface cracks in a piping system. A high temperature creep fracture parameter $C^{\ast}$-integral is obtained from the finite element analyses of generated 3-D models. Post crack growth module is further appended here to calculate the amount of crack growth. Finally the remaining lives of surface cracked pipes for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.

In this study, the internal structural design, dynamic characteristics and load analyses of the small scaled rotor blade required for LCH(Light Civil Helicopter) main rotor wind tunnel test were carried out. The test is performed to evaluate the aerodynamic performance and noise characteristics of the LCH main rotor system. Therefore, the Mach-scale technique was appled to design the small scaled blade to simulate the equivalent aerodynamic characteristics as the full scale rotor system. It is necessary to increase the rotor speed to maintain the same blade tip speed as the full scale blade. In addition, the blade weight, section stiffness, and natural frequency were scaled according to the Mach-type scaling factor(${\lambda}$). For the design of skin, spar, torsion box, which are the main components of the blade, carbon and glass fiber composite materials were adopted, and composite materials are prepreg types that can be supplied domestically. The KSec2D program was used to evaluate the section stiffness of the blade. Also, structural loads and dynamic characteristics of the Mach scale blade were investigated through the comprehensive rotorcraft analysis program CAMRADII.

In this paper, an individual blade control (IBC) methodology is applied to find the best input scenario for vibratory hub loads reduction of XH-59A co-axial rotorcraft in high speed flight. A comprehensive aeromechanics analysis code CAMRAD II is employed to analyze the aircraft. A parametric study is conducted for optimum IBC inputs leading to the maximum vibration reduction. Numerical results demonstrate that up to 50% reduction in the hub vibration index is obtained for an IBC input at 3/rev frequency with the amplitude and phase angle of 0.5 deg. and 300 deg., respectively. The upper rotor exhibits as much as 6% more vibration reduction as compared to that of the lower rotor due to a clean inflow characteristic of the rotor. It is found that further vibration reduction gain is reached for IBC inputs with advancing-side only control. The hub vibration becomes reduced by up to 17% in reference to that with full rotor disk control. It is noted that the additional gain is obtained with significantly less power input with the advancing-side only control.

Because the water exposed to shock waves caused by an underwater explosion cannot withstand the appreciable tension induced by the change in both pressure and velocity, the surrounding water is cavitated. This cavitating water changes the transferring circumstance of the shock loading. Three phenomena contribute to hull-plate damage; initial shock loading and its interaction with the hull plate, local cavitation, and local cavitation closure then shock reloading. Because the main concern of this paper is local cavitation due to a near-field underwater explosion, the water surface and the waves reflected from the sea bottom were not considered. A set of governing equations for the structure and the fluid were derived. A simple one-dimensional infinite plate problem was considered to verify this uncoupled solution approach compared with the analytic solution, which is well known in this area of interest. The uncoupled solution approach herein would be useful for obtaining a relatively high level of accuracy despite its simplicity and high computational efficiency compared to the conventional coupled method. This paper will help improve the understanding of fluid-structure interaction phenomena and provide a schematic explanation of the practical problem.
This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of 2-dimensional shallow arch type truss after sizing optimization. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of 2D arch truss against a central point load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of truss are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The postbuckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge change of post-buckling behaviour between the initial structure and optimum structure. Numerical results can be used as useful information for future research of large spatial structures.
