The inference about the cause of death of Korean Fir in Mt. Halla through the analysis of spatial dying pattern - Proposing the possibility of excess soil moisture by climate changes - (한라산 구상나무 공간적 고사패턴 분석을 통한 고사원인 추정 - 기후변화에 따른 토양수분 과다 가능성 제안 -)

  • This study analyzed the density and mortality rate of Korean fir at 9 sites where individuals of Korean firs were marked into the live and dead trees with coordinates on orthorectified aerial images by digital photogrammetric system. As a result of the analysis, Korean fir in each site showed considerable heterogeneity in density and mortality rate depending on the location within site. This make it possible to assume that death of Korean fir can occur by specific factors that vary depending on the location. Based on the analyzed densities and mortality rates of Korea fir, we investigated the correlation between topographic factors such as altitude, terrain slope, drainage network, solar radiation, aspect and the death of Korean fir. The density of Korean fir increases with altitude, and the mortality rate also increases. A negative correlation is found between the terrain slope and the mortality rate, and the mortality rate is higher in the gentle slope where the drainage network is less developed. In addition, it is recognized that depending on the aspect, the mortality rate varies greatly, and the mean solar radiation is higher in live Korean fir-dominant area than in dead Korean fir-dominant area. Overall, the mortality rate of Korean fir in Mt. Halla area is relatively higher in areas with relatively low terrain slope and low solar radiation. Considering the results of previous studies that the terrain slope has a strong negative correlation with soil moisture and the relationship between solar radiation and evaporation, these results lead us to infer that excess soil moisture is the cause of Korean fir mortality. These inferences are supported by a series of climate change phenomena such as precipitation increase, evaporation decrease, and reduced sunshine duration in the Korean peninsula including Jeju Island, increase in mortality rate along with increased precipitation according to the elevation of Mt. Halla and the vegetation change in the mountain. It is expected that the spatial patterns in the density and mortality rate of Korean fir, which are controlled by topography such as altitude, slope, aspect, solar radiation, drainage network, can be used as spatial variables in future numerical modeling studies on the death or decline of Korean fir. In addition, the method of forest distribution survey using the orthorectified aerial images can be widely used as a numerical monitoring technique in long - term vegetation change research.

Distribution of Inorganic N from Fertigated and Broadcast-applied 15N-Urea along Drip Irrigation Domain (점적관수시 관비와 표면시비된 중질소 표지요소의 행동비교)

  • The objectives of this study were to measure the changes in soil moisture regimes and the distribution patterns of inorganic N derived from the fertigated $^{15}N$-labeled urea, and compare them with the results obtained from broadcast-applied soil under the same drip irrigation domain. In fertigated soil, a $^{15}N$-labeled urea solution of $117mg\;N\;L^{-1}$ was applied by surface drip irrigation for 4 weeks. In broadcast-applied soil, no the other hand, 4 g of $^{15}N$-labeled urea(1.87 g N) mixed thoroughly with 5 kg of soil was placed on the surface of packed soil. Soil water status was controlled by drip irrigation scheduled at soil matric potential of -50 kPa. A calibrated time-domain reflectometry probe was installed in the soil vertically 15 cm apart from a drip emitter to control drip irrigation. About 60% of urea-derived inorganic nitrogen was remained in the top zone between 0 and 10 cm depth of fertigated soil, while, most of the inorganic nitrogen (91%) was accumulated in the top zone of broadcast-applied soil. Of inorganic nitrogen derived from urea, the percentage of $NO_3{^-}$ was much higher for fertigation (99%) than for surface application (62%). The relatively lower recovery of urea-derived inorganic nitrogen of broadcast-applied urea-N (51%) than that of fertigated urea-N (89%) was attributable to enhanced $NH_3$ volatilization.

Tephra Origin of Goryeri Archaeological Site, Milyang Area, Korea (밀양 고례리 화산 유리물질 기원 해석)

  • Goryeri archaeological site is located in the upstream valley of the Danjang River. The basement rocks of the area are composed of the Cretaceous to Palaeogene biotite granite (KbGr), acidic dyke (Kad), Milyang Andesite (Kma) and Jyunggagsan Formation. Among them Milyang Andesite and Jyunggagsan Formation are prevailed in archaeological site and they are composed of reddish brown tuffaceous shale, sandstone and conglomerate, with intercalations of acidic tuffs and lapilli tuffs. The purpose of this research is not only to compare REE pattern of the soil-sedimentary deposits with those of surrounding rocks, but also to identify vitric tephra in the soil-sedimentary deposits derived from the andesite, acidic tuff and lapilii tuff, in order to illucidate the provenance of the vitric tephra. The rare earth element(REE) of the soils and sedimentary deposits results in the same REE pattern with those analyzed from the surrounding basement rocks. This indicates that the soils and sedimentary deposits are originated from the surrounding basement rocks, most probably from the andesite and lapilli tuff. In addition, vitric tephra were identified both in the Quaternary in-situ weathered soils and sedimentary deposits (PMU-13 and PMU-17), and in the weathered surrounding lapilli tuff. These vitric tephra are considered to be different from those of Japanese AT(Aira Tanzawa) -tephra. The latter is predominant with clean, platty, bubble-walled and Y-shaped vitrics, while the former is conspicuous with those shapes of large and diverse size and devitrified, as well as having secondarily bubbled-surfaces reflecting surface weathering. The size of vitric fragments in the Goryeri site is about 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and large in size in compasion to 150${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of Japanese AT-Tephra. The interim results of the research are contradictary to the explanations based on a series of AT-tephra researches carried by Japanese scholar. In short, the vitric materials of the Goryeri archaeological site are most probably originated from the weathering products of the surrounding basement rocks, and are different from the AT-tephra in their size, shape and devitrification properties. Thus it is highly recommended to have a further comprehensive research which is more emphasized the magmatic genesis of these vitric tephra in addition to the external shape and morphology.

A Study of Improvement for the Prediction of Groundwater Pollution in Rural Area: Application in Keumsan, Korea (농촌지역 지하수의 오염 예측 방법 개선방안 연구: 충남 금산 지역에의 적용)

  • Groundwater pollution prediction methods have been developed to plan the sustainable groundwater usage and protection from potential pollution in many countries. DRASTIC established by US EPA is the most widely used groundwater vulnerability mapping method. However, the DRASTIC showed limitation in predicting the groundwater contamination because the DRASTIC method is designed to embrace only hydrogeologic factors. Therefore, in this study, three different methods were applied to improve a groundwater pollution prediction method: US EPA DRASTIC, Modified-DRASTIC suggested by Panagopoulos et al. (2006), and LSDG (Land use, Soil drainage, Depth to water, Geology) proposed by Rupert (1999). The Modified-DRASTIC is the modified version of the DRASTIC in terms of the rating scales and the weighting coefficients. The rating scales of each factor were calculated by the statistical comparison of nitrate concentrations in each class using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test; while the weighting coefficients were modified by the statistical correlation of each parameter to nitrate concentrations using the Spearman's rho test. The LSDG is a simple rating method using four factors such as Land use, Soil drainage, Depth to water, and Geology. Classes in each factor are compared by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test which gives a different rating to each class if the nitrate concentration in the class is significantly different. A database of nitrate concentrations in groundwaters from 149 wells was built in Keumsan area. Application of three different methods for assessing the groundwater pollution potential resulted that the prediction which was represented by a correlation (r) between each index and nitrate was improved from the EPA DRASTIC (r = 0.058) to the modified rating (r = 0.245), to the modified rating and weights (r = 0.400), and to the LSDG (r = 0.415), respectively. The LSDG seemed appropriate to predict the groundwater pollution in that it contained land use as a factor of the groundwater pollution sources and the rating of each class was defined by a real pollution nitrate concentration.

Research Trends of Papers Published in Journal of the Korean Society of Grassland Science During Last Twenty (지난 20년간 한국 초지학회지에 발표된 논문의 연구동향)

  • Research trends of papers published in Journal of the Korean Society of Grassland Science(JKSGS) during last 20 years(1982~2001) were examined. Total number of papers published in JKSGS during last 20 years was 668. In the classification of published papers according to research objects, the rate of paper related to grassland was highest as average 18.6% of total research papers during last 20 years. Next was an orchardgrass 8.7, com 8.4, and sorghum and sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid 7.1%. In classification of published papers according to research fields, cultivation field was studied more than others and the rate of cultivation field was highest as 38.8%, and physiology, utilization, breeding and biotechnology field was 23.7, 20.7, 9.1 and 6.6%, respectively. In comparison of average rate of research contents on the papers published during last 20 years, studies on the manure and fertilization were continously increased up to average 20% during recent 5 years(1997~2001). Study on the biotechnolgy was rapidly increased from average 6.6% of last 20 years to average 15% of recent 5 years. Study on the weed was also increased from average 2.5% to 5.9%. On the other hand, studies on the productivity and quality were rapidly decreased from average 31.3% of 5 years(1982~1956) to average 7.7% of recent 5 years. Research trend on the pasture appeared to be similar.

  • The conventional numerical models to analyze flow in subsurface porous media under the transient state usually generate numerical oscillation and unstability due to local flux domain for critical cases such as infiltration into initially dry soil during rainfall period. In this case, it is required refined mesh and small time step, but it decrease efficiency of computation. In this study, numerical unstability in discontinuity domain is removed by applying particle tracking algorithm to simulate unsteady subsurface flow with inflow boundary condition. Finally the hybrid LE FEM improving numerical stability is proposed. The hypothetical domains with unsteady uniform and nonuniform flow field were used to demonstrated algorithm verification. In comparison with analytic solution, we obtained reasonable results and conducted simulation of hypothetical 3-D recharge/pumping area. The proposed algorithm can simulate saturated/unsaturated porous media with more practical problems and will greatly contribute to accuracy and stability of numerical computation.

Electrical and Electromagnetic Surveys on the Nanji-do Landfill (난지도 매립장 전기.전자 탐사)

  • Schlumberger electrical soundings and Coincident loop time-domain electromagnetic soundings were made on the Nanji-do landfill to investigate the nature of fills and the subsurface structure. The measured data were transformed into apparent resistivity values and then inverted in terms of 1-D resistivity models. At 6 points, both measurements were carried out to check the validity of the interpreted subsurface electrical structures. Interpreted layered models from each method show a good agreement. Obtained models show that a conductive zone exist below the shallow resistive zone. Conductive zone, which is considered to be influenced by decomposition of organic waste materials and infiltration of precipitation, is terminated by resistive zone which is considered as basement. Considering the fact that conductive zone extends to the basement and there exist no barrier layers such as clay layers, contaminant plumes are likely to flow into the groundwater directly.

  • 토양수분 및 황사발생 연구에 있어 효율적인 광역 분석을 위하여 위성자료가 활용되고 있다. 활용 시나리오에 따라서는 준실시간 자료 수신, 처리가 필요하며 본 연구에서는 이에 대한 방안을 연구하기 위하여 유럽 EUMETSAT(European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites)의 ASCAT(Advanced Scatterometer) Metop-A 자료에 대하여 파악하였다. 자료 수신 프로토콜에 있어서 FTP, HTTP 등 전통적 방법에 대한 현황과 함께 비교적 최근 기법인 OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium)  WMS(Web Map Service), WCS(Web Coverage Service) 방식의 지원 현황에 대하여 확인하였다. 제공되는 자료 Format부분은 EPS Native와 BUFR(Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data)을 살펴보되 데이터 프로바이더 측에서 대부분 채택되고 있는 NetCDF(network Common Data Form)를 중심으로 파악하였다. 수신된 자료의 처리 자동화를 위한 소프트웨어는 OSGeo(The Open Source Geospatial Foundation)의 GDAL(Geospatial Data Abstraction Library), 미국 NCAR(National Center for Atmospheric Research)의 NCL(NCAR Command Language)을 중심으로 확인하였다. 자료 가공기법은 격자(Raster) 자료에 대한 기본 메타정보 확인, 좌표참조체계 변환, 해상도 및 Format 변환을 중심으로 확인하였다. 한편 OGC WMS, WCS는 자료의 전송 프로토콜 기법이면서 동시에 서버 사이드에서의 자료 변환 기능을 구비하고 있다. 예를 들어 Http Request에서 영역(Extent), Format 형식, 좌표참조체계를 지정할 수 있다. OGC WMS에 대한 EUMETSAT 파일럿 서비스에서 반환 자료의 공간적 영역, 복수 시점 제공 현황, 반환 포맷 지원 상황은 실제 메서드를 사용하여 파악하였고, 향후 발전 방향을 전망하였다.

Risk Assessment Based on Highway Hydrogen Chloride Gas Leakage Scenario Using GIS (GIS를 활용한 고속도로 염화수소 가스 누출 시나리오 기반 리스크 평가)

  • As the domestic chemical industry continues to develop, handling and transportation of chemicals increases every year. Road freight in Korea accounts for more than 90%, and most of the chemical transportation is done through roads. These chemical vehicles can lead to major accidents if accidents occur. Transportation vehicles are likely to cause water pollution and soil pollution, which are factors of environmental damage, as well as traffic accidents that are the primary damage. In this work, we write a scenario for hydrogen chloride gas leakage by setting Banpo IC and Seocho IC sections as research areas, and use the ALOHA program to measure the predicted distance and analyze the time when hydrogen chloride gas reached according to the distance. In addition, risk assessment using population density was carried out for areas of damage caused by time using GIS. This suggests the need for prevention and countermeasures in areas of damage.
