The Synthesis and Characterization of Beta Alumina Powder by Microwave Extraction and Calcination Method (마이크로파 추출 및 하소법에 의한 베타 알루미나 분말 합성 및 특성)

  • 마이크로파 추출 및 하소 공정을 통하여 카올린으로부터 베타 알루미나 전구체 및 베타 알루미나 분말을 합성하였다. 황산 알루미늄 및 가성소다의 혼합 용액을 교반되는 에탄올 용액 중에 적하시켜서 $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$.17$H_2O$$Na_2$SO$_4$.10$H_2O$의 균일한 침전물을 얻었다. $\beta$- 및 $\beta$\"-Al$_2$O$_3$상으로 구성된 베타 알루미나를 얻기 위하여 재래식 및 마이크로파 하소법으로 주어진 온도에서 약 2h 동안 침전물 시료를 하소하였다. 재래식 하소된 시료에 비하여 마이크로파 하소된 시료는 $\beta$\"-Al$_2$O$_3$상이 상대적으로 많이 존재하였다. 또한, 재래식 하소된 시료와 마이크로파 하소된 시료의 미세구조는 매우 상이하였다. 매우 상이하였다.

Thermomechanical Properties of $\beta$-Sialon Synthesized from Kaolin (카올린으로부터 합성한 $\beta$-Sialon의 열적.기계적 성질)

  • ${\beta}$-Sialon powder was synthesized by the simultaneous reduction and nitridation of Hadong kaolin at 1350$^{\circ}C$ in N2-H2 atmosphere, using graphite as a reducing agent. The synthesized ${\beta}$-Sialon powder was pressurelessly sintered over 1450-1850$^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen atmosphere. The average particle size of ${\beta}$-Sialon powder was about 4.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The relative density, M.O.R., fracture toughness and micro-hardness of ${\beta}$-Sialon ceramics sintered at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour were 92%, 36 kpsi, 2.8MN/㎥/2 and 13.3 GN/㎡, respectively. The critical temperature difference (ΔT) in water quench thermal shock behavior showed about 375$^{\circ}C$ for the synthesized ${\beta}$-Sialon ceramics.

  • In this research, electrokinetic remediation test was experimented with contaminated kaoline specimen at below, above the cation-exchange capacity of the mineral. The changes of the flow in electro-osmosis with open electrodes and current were presented, and lead removal results were evaluated through the extraction test. As a result, it was showed that removal efficiency was 20-30%, 67-87% In the anode As lead transport continues, the lead precipitation within a narrow zone very close to the cathode can go significantly high. This high lead precipitation near the cathode could block the flow path, decrease the conductivity, and thus the electroosmotic flow. The net effect will cause a decrease in the efficiency of electrokinetic processing. Therefore, in this study, citric acid and surfactant solution was used at the cathode as enhancement techniques.

  • Cement-stabilized clay has widespread applications in Deep Mixing projects, whereby soft deep clay deposits are improved through the addition of cement. While much research on this subject has taken place over the past decade, the strength and deformation behaviour of cement-stabilized clay is still not well understood. An extensive laboratory program was conducted on kaolin stabilized with up to 10% cement. Water curing was employed for durations up to 112 days. To study the microstructure of raw and stabilized soil, use is made of SEM. Micrographs of selected raw and stabilized soil were obtained. These micrographs were closely analyzed for any change in the microstructure of the soil as a result of stabilization.

  • In this study, respectively and furnaced kaolin at $900^{\circ}C$ was also manufactured into meta kaolin by air cooling and water cooling method. The chemical characteristic and mechanical properties of various type of blended cements contained above mentioned gypsum and meta kaolin materials analyzed and compared with those characteristics of cement matrix with silica fume. From the test, the cement mixed meta kaolin made in water cooling has more excellent quality than other material.

  • ${\beta}$-Silicon carbide(${\beta}$-SiC) whiskers could be synthesized by the carbothermal reduction of kaolin at tem-peratures between 1400 and 1500$^{\circ}C$. The whiskers were grown up to about 1150 of aspect ratio by VS mechanism (showing tapering tips) and to about 45 of that by VLS mechanism (showing round droplet tips) respectively. Hydrocarbon like methane in the reaction atmosphere promoted the formation of gaseous il-icon monoxide(SiO) from silicon dioxide(SiO2) and subsequently reacted with it to form whiskers. The for-mation of ${\beta}$-SiC whiskers increased with increasing carbon content(to 30 wt%) and reaction temperatures. The max. yield of ${\beta}$-SiC whiskers was 15% at 1500$^{\circ}C$ under 20%CH4/80%H2.

Surface Characterization of $\beta$-Sialon Powder Prepared from Hadong Kaolin (하동 카올린으로부터 제조한 $\beta$-Sialon 분체의 표면특성)

  • The nature and composition of the surfaces of silicon nitride and β-Sialon powders were investigated using high voltage and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). β-Sialon powder was produced from Hadong kaolin by the carbothermic reduction and simultaneous nitridation. XPS showed that Al was contained in the surface of β-Sialon powder besides Si, N and O components, which is different from that of silicon nitride. It was supposed that Al in the surface of β-Sialon was bonded with oxygen from the oxygen-nitrogen ratio and the measurement of Al 2p binding energies. After both silicon nitride and β-Sialon powders were oxidized at 800℃ for 24h in air, nitrogen didn't exist in the surfaces and the depth of the oxide layer increased. The measurement of Si 2p binding energies showed that the chemical shifts occurred from Si3N2O and/or Si2N2O to SiO2 phase.

  • This study examined the feasibility of Electrokinetic-Fenton process for remediation of contaminated kaolinite by phenanthrene. The test using 7% H$_2$O$_2$as anode purging solution indicated the higher electrical current and electroosmotic flow than the test using 3.5% H$_2$O$_2$. And distribution in the soil of H$_2$O$_2$concentration showed the higher value of the former than the latter. Furthermore, the test using 7% H$_2$O$_2$and 0.01N H$_2$SO$_4$was the highest electrical current and electroosmotic flow and H$_2$O$_2$was effectively introduced to the cathode region. As it turned out, the treatment effect of phenanthrene was improved in compare with the other tests.

  • Effect of Li2O.4B2O3 frit addition on microstructural and thermal expansion behaviour of the $\beta$-spodumene ceramics made from kaolinite was investigated. With 2.0~4.0 wt% frit addition, the densification by liquid phase sintering caused low water absorption below 3% and enhancement of beding strength. As the amount of frit addition was increased, thermal expansion coefficient was increased to large scale, but in 2 wt% frit addition, its thermal expansion coefficient was constrained to 1.92$\times$10-6$^{\circ}C$-1.

  • Mesoporous ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ has been prepared by selective leaching of silica from calcined domestic kaolinite. From XRD and TG-DTA data, it was found that the microstructure of a spinel phase, consisting of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ containing a small mount of amorphous silica, was obtained by calcining kaolinite samples at around $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24h. Porous ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was prepared by selectively dissolving the amorphous silica in KOH solutions of 1~4M at temperatures of $25~90^{\circ}C$ for leaching time of 0.5~4h. In the case of the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ obtained upon KOH treatment of 4M at $90^{\circ}C$ for 1h, it showed a very narrow unimodal pore size distribution, and also formed much mesopore at a diameter of around $40~80{\AA}$. The specific surface area was $250\textrm{m}^2/g$ and the total pore volume was $0.654\textrm{cm}^3/g$.
