  • In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of grinding and wear process of diamond wheel far ceramic materials. Normal component of grinding resistance of $Al_2$O$_3$ was less then that of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$. This seems to be the characteristics of ceramic tools on work pieces both of high hardness. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, as the mesh number of wheel increases, the surface roughness decreases. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, the surface roughness does not decreases. Specific binding energy decreases as the material removal rate per unit time increases. For the case of $Si_3 N_4$ and $ZrO_2$, grinding is carried out by abrasive wear processes. For the case of $Al_2 O_3$, grinding is carried out by grain shedding process due to brittle fracture.

  • Infrared (IR) optic lens can be fabricated by a single point diamond turning (SPDT) machine without subsequent polishing process. However, this machining process often leaves micro-cracks that deteriorate the surface quality. In this work, we propose an experimental design to remove micro-cracks on IR lens. The proposed design gathered data between cutting process condition and Rt surface roughness. This is of great importance because the scale of micro-cracks is a few micrometer. Rt surface roughness is suitable for analyzing maximum peak height signals of the profile. The experimental results indicate that feed per revolution variable is one of the most dominant variable, affecting the generation micro-cracks on IR lens surfaces.

  • Ultrasonic machining technology has been developed over recent years for the manufacture of cost-effective and quality-assured precision parts for several industrial application such as optics, semiconductors, aerospace, and automobile. Ultrasonic machining process is an efficient and economical means of precision machining of ceramic materials. The process is non-thermal, non-chemical and non-electric md hardly creates changes to the mechanical properties of the brittle materials machined. This paper describes the characteristics of the micro-hole of $Al_2O_3$ by ultrasonic machining with tungsten carbide tool. The effects of various parameters of ultrasonic machining, including abrasives, machining force and pressure, on the material removal rate, hole quality, and tool wear presented and discussed. The ultrasonic Machining of micro-holes in ceramics has been under taken and the machining mechanism in the ultrasonic machining of ceramics based on the fracture-mechanics concept has been analyzed.

  • Brittle materials are very weak for impact because of typical characteristics which happen to be easily fractured with low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact due to small spheres, high contact pressure is occurred to impact surface and then local damage on specimen is developed, since there are little plastic deformations due to contact pressure compared to metals. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda lime glass by impact of small sphere is explained and the effects of the constraint conditions of impact spheres and materials for the material damage were studied by using soda-lime glass. that is the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring crack, cone crack and several kinds of cracks.

  • A clear understanding of the surface formation mechanism due to cutting is very important to help produce a good quality surface. Much of the roughness along the length of a bar being cut in a lathe can be explained in terms of macroscopic tool shape and feed rate. However, the roughness along the direction of cutting requires a different explanation. The formation of surface roughness is a problem in flow and fracture of materials in the vicinity of the tool edge. On a microscopic scale the cutting edge is rounded because it is impossible to grind a perfectly sharp cutting edge. Even if a perfectly sharp cutting edge were obtained it would soon become dull as a result of rapid breakdown and wear of the cutting edge. A research project is proposed in which in the main object is to model the surface formation mechanism due to cutting. The tool was assumed to be dull, that is, its edge has a finite radius. In order to study the effect of the radius of cutting edge on the surface formation, tools having different cutting edges were used. For orthogonal cutting experiment, cast iron and glass were chosen as brittle materials. Plowing forces acting in the cutting edge were estimated and its effect on the surface roughness was studied by observing the machined surface using optical microscope.

  • Graphite is commonly used for rocket nozzle. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate compression fracture behavior of ATJ graphite. Uniaxial compression test is conducted in accordance with ASTM C 695 in the range of R.T to $900^{\circ}C$. The size effects of specimen on the compressive strength and fracture behavior were investigated. Two types of cylindrical specimen, i.e., where the diameter to length ratio is 1:2 (ASTM C 695 specimen) or 1:1, were tested at room temperature.

  • This paper presents key findings obtained from the numerical experiment investigating into the use of the cylindrical cavity for rock splitting operations. The stress and strain path analyses were carried out in order to provide a better insight into the crack formation. The principal stress analysis carried out along the crack line using the results obtained from these numerical analyses allowed the failure of the brittle material and the crack propagation to be investigated. This paper also suggested possible reasons for the change in crack direction observed during the rock splitting operations using the results obtained.

  • As composite materials, the addition of steel fiber with concrete significant)y improves the engineering properties of structural members, notably shear strength and ductility. Flexural strength, fatigue strength, and the capacity to resist cracking are also enhanced. Especially the strengthening effect of steel fiber in shear is to prevent the brittle shear failure. In this study, shear-strengthening effect of steel fiber in RC short columns were investigated from the literature surveys and 10th specimem's member test results. From the test results, following conclusions can be made; the maximum enhancement of shear-strengthening effect can be achieved at about 1.5 % of steel fiber contents, shear strength and ductility capacity were improved remarkably in comparison to stiffness and energy dissipation capacity in steel fiber reinforced concrete.

  • The reinforced high-strength-concrete beam subjected to flexure moment behaves more brittly than the moderate-strength-concrete beam reinforced with equal reinforcement ratio($\rho$/$\rho_b$). Test results show that when the concrete strength exceeds 830kg/$cm^2$, the maximum reinforcement ratio should be less than $0.6{\rho}_b$ for ductile behavior (${\rho}_b$=balanced steel ratio). The ratio of flexural strength between experimental results and analytical results with rectangular stress block decrease as the compressive strength of concrete increase. The shape of the compressive stress block distributed triangularly. because the ascending part of the stress-strain curve shows fairly linear response up to maximum stress in contrast to the nonlinear behavior of the medium and low strength specimens.

  • There is mounting recognition among concrete researchers that fiber reinforcement makes up for the inherent weakness in resisting tensile force of structural concrete. In practice of application of the fiber to concrete, however, several problems still remain to solve for assuring a uniform mix quality. The Kagome truss that is widely used in mechanical engineering field seems to be a good replacement for the steel fiber. This paper presents the test results of a pilot study for the concrete members reinforced by Kagome truss which is a periodic cellular metal of wire-woven. Three types of Kagome truss bulk were prefabricated and filled with normal concrete to make small-scaled test beams. The beams reinforced by a normal steel stirrups were also tested up to failure to compare the behavioral results. From the results obtained, it is appeared that comparing with beams reinforced by normal stirrups, the beams reinforced by Kagome truss showed better performance in load carrying capacity as well as ductility. Therefore, the Kagome truss is proved to be a good web shear reinforcing material.
