This study was conducted to elucidate the best cutting condition in propagation of Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii in respect of survival rate, rooting rate, and early growth after cutting via process of cutting time, cutting media, cutting type and growth regulators. As for cutting time, rooting rate was 68.3% on April, which was higher than 39.5% on May and 32.5% on June. The best cutting media was stream sand of rooting rate 72.7%. Those of mixed soil and decomposition were 40.1% and 27.5% each. The effect of growth regulators was different according to the kind of cutting media. There was no effect on stream sand media which showed the highest rooting rate, while it was very effective on the media of decomposition of granite, which rooting rate showed the lowest. Hardwood as cutting materials showed somewhat higher survival and rooting rate compared to semi-hardwood. The cutting with hardwood condition to stream sand on April, it is regarded to be the most effective condition for Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii to increase survival and rooting rate. Therefore in this experiment it is considered that the best season cutting is April, and the most useful media and plant materials stream sand, and hardwood respectively.

The purpose of this study was to investigate shooting and fruiting characteristics of persimmon 'Hachiya' affected by sub-zero temperature at early budding stage. The number of developed shoots, and the number of shoots with young fruits, and the shooting and fruiting of terminal buds of one-year-old branch (1YOB) were significantly decreased with the sub-zero temperature treatment (SZT). The number of shoots developed in the top of 1YOB decreased 47.2% due to SZT. The number of shoots with fruits was significantly decreased at 50% or higher in non-budding rate of 1-YOB. Especially the number of fruits (Y) at the three terminal buds of 1YOB was significantly affected by SZT and the non-budding rate (X) as Y = -0.145X + 12.950 ($r^2=0.4672^*$). Therefore, in the early budding stage of persimmon, when tree is affected by SZT ($-2^{\circ}C$, 3 hours), shoots growth is reduced and increase of 10% in non-budding rate reduces 1.4 of fruits per the three terminal buds of 1YOB.
In order to know growing habit of the maize bearing tillers, IK//IRI/B68 with tillers was grown and compared with Jinjoo Ok which is not tillering, and several parameters were measured for analysis. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The plant height and fresh weight of IK//IRI/B68 were lower than those of Jinjoo Ok until the tasseling stage of IK/ /IRI/B68, while then plant height and fresh weight of IK//IRI/B68 were higher than those of Jinjoo Ok after the tasseling stage of IK//IRI/B68. 2. The average number of tillers per plant of IK//IRI/B68 at maturity was 3.7 and the average tiller height of IK//IRI/B68 was almost the same as the height of the main stem. 3. The dry weight of IK//IRI/B68 at the early growing stage was lower than the check hybrid Jinjoo Ok, while it was higher than Jinjoo Ok at the later growing stage. 4. The LAI of IK//IRI/B68 after full expansion of the leaves was greater than that of Jinjoo Ok The LAIs of IK//IRI/B68 and Jinjoo Ok were 12.6 and 5.8, respectively. 5. The CGR of Jinjoo Ok was greater than that of IK//IRI/B68 until earey July while the CGR of Jinjoo Ok was lower than that of IK//IRI/B68 as the tillers of IK//IRI/B68 were fully developed. 6. The LAR and RGR of IK//IRI/B68 were greater than those of Jinjoo Ok until mid-July. The RGR of IK//IRI/B68 seemed to be affected by both NAR and LAR. The RGR of Jinjoo Ok seemed to be affected by LAR.
This study was carried out to determine the effects of environment controls (temperature and shading level) on germination responses and early growth of Allium thunbergii. Germination experiment was performed by pre-treatment (with low temperature and wetting treatments for 0, 20, 40 and 60 days) and temperature controls (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30). And growth experiment was performed by containers (128 and 200 cavities containers) and shading level (full sunlight (control), 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Germination rate of A. thunbergii seeds were, 20 days of seed pre-treatment, the highest at $10^{\circ}C$ (81.7%) and the more temperature went up, the more germination rate went down. As a result of surveying container and shading treatments, the height, leaf area, leaf length, leaf aspect ratio (L/W) were higher under 50% shading of 128 (24.2cm, $2.76cm^2$, 22.3cm and 223.4, respectively) and 200 (22.6cm, $2.29cm^2$, 19.4cm and 190.5, respectively) cavities container. The root was grown well under full sunlight. Specially, fresh weight of shoot (leaves+stem) was higher under 50% shading of 128 (0.241g) and 200 (0.212g) cavities container. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. thunbergii seeds need to pre-treatment (with low temperature and wetting treatments for 20~40 days) for high germination rate. And it is judged better growth and higher yield by maintaining 50% shading of 200 cavities container.

The present work quantified the growth of young biofilm in a model distribution system that was fed with chlorinated drinking water at a hydraulic retention time of 2 h. Bacterial biofilms grew on the surface of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) slides at a specific growth rate of $0.14{\pm}0.09day^{-1}$ for total bacteria and $0.16{\pm}0.08day^{-1}$ for heterotrophic bacteria, reaching $3.1{\times}10^4cells/cm^2$ and $6.6{\times}10^3CFU/cm^2$ after 10 days, respectively. The specific growth rates of biofilm-forming bacteria were found to be much higher than those of bulk-phase bacteria, suggesting that biofilm bacteria account for a major part of the bacterial production in this model system. Biofilm isolates exhibited characteristic kinetic properties, as determined by ${\mu}_{max}$ and $K_S$ values using the Monod model, in a defined growth medium containing various amounts of acetate. The lowest ${\mu}_{max}$ value was observed in bacterial species belonging to the genus Methylobacterium, and their slow growth seemed to confer high resistance to chlorine treatment (0.5 mg/L for 10 min). $K_S$ values (inversely related to substrate affinity) of Sphingomonas were two orders of magnitude lower for acetate carbon than those of other isolates. The Sphingomonas isolates may have obligate-oligotrophic characteristics, since the lower $K_S$ values allow them to thrive under nutrient-deficient conditions. These results provide a better understanding and control of multi-species bacterial biofilms that develop within days in a drinking water distribution system.

Mycelial growth and days required for sclerotial formation(DRSF) in vitro, and disease incidence of infected plants in the field were investigated to evaluate disease resistance of nine garlic cultivars against two species of Sclerotium causing garlic white rot. There were differences among mycelial growth and sclerotial formation of two white rot pathogens on different garlic cultivars in vitro. Mycelial growth showed the highest level on the clove of 'Daeseo'. Sclerotia of two white rot pathogen were formed the earliest on the clove of 'Kodang' and the latest on the clove of 'Namdo'. In field trial all of nine garlic cultivars were highly susceptible to Sclerotium cepivorum and cold-type garlics were less susceptible than warm-type garlics. Meanwhile garlic cultivars used showed differences among resistant responses to Sclerotium sp., forming large sclerotia. All of warm-type garlics showed highly susceptible response, but three cold-type garlics, 'Seosan', 'Danyang' and 'Yechon' showed moderate resistant response and 'Euisung' showed resistant response. To evaluate cultivar resistance of garlics quantitatively disease progress curve was transformed as linear regression equation. Among the intercept (early disease incidence) and the slope (disease infection rate) obtained from the transformed equation, final disease incidence, and area under disease progress curve(AUDPC), AUDPC was the most effective to evaluate disease resistance of garlics to both of white rot pathogens. There was little correlation between mycelial growth and sclerotial formation on garlic cloves in vitro, and epidemiological parameters (early disease incidence, final disease incidence, disease infection rate, AUDPC) obtained from the field trial. Mycelial growth of S. cepivorum was positively correlated with final disease incidence and disease infection rate obtained from the field trial, meanwhile DRSF was negatively correlated with the epidemiological parameters.
This study has been made to find out more effective way of vegetation establishment on severely denuded forest land from the viewpoint of soil moisture regimes. Various environmental factors were measured to estimate soil moisture conditions of different sites. Soil moisture influence on growth of over vegetations, water requirement and drought resistance were analyzed. The efficiency of water use was also reckoned at different fertility levels and different soil moisture conditions. This research is composed of field experiment and green house experiment. Field experiment includes height growth, survival and coverage analysis of cover vegetations (Robinia pseudoacacia L., Lespedeza bicolor Turcz, Arundinella hirta Tanaka var. ciliare Koidzumi.) with 4 fertility level treatments on 3 slopes (Steep: $37^{\circ}$, Moderate: $25^{\circ}$, Gentle; $17^{\circ}$) during dry season (1 April-30 June) and wet season (1 July-10 September). At the same time temperature, relative humidity and precipitation were measured to understand the environmental changes. Soil moisture conditions were measured with soil moisture meter with 24 soil cells. Green house experiment comprised height, fresh weight and dry weight measurements of cover vegetations with 4 fertility levels and 3 moisture conditions for 70 days. The results extracted from experiments are as follews. 1. Cover vegtations have 3 patterns of water requirement at the early stage of growth. a) Robinia type has high water requirement and weaker drought resistance. b) Lespedeza type has low water requirement and stronger drought resistance. c) Arundinella type has moderate water requirement and weaker drought resistance. 2. The vegetations have different optimum fertility levels in different soil moisture supply condition. a) Robinia needs a low fertility level in dry condition and a high level in wet condition. b) Lespedeza needs only low fertility level in all conditions. c) Arundinella needs a low fertility level in dry condition and a high level in wet condition. 3. The efficiency of water use (Water/1g dry weight) by fertility levels is different from one another. Robinia and Arundinella have a good efficiency at low fertility level in dry condition and at high fertility level in wet condition. Lespedeza has a good efficiency at low fertility level in all conditions. 4. $P_2O_5$ requirement of Robinia and Lespedeza is high, but that of Arundinella is low. Soil moisture condition has a great influence on $P_2O_5$ absorption in dendued forest land. Once Vegetations are established on suitable sites with optimum fertitity level according to different moisture condition, even the small amount of soil water in denuded land can he used with high efficiency and the effect of fertility treatment can be maximized.
The objective of this study was to investigate suitable plantation site for planted Chamaecyparis obtusa seedlings from the analysis of regional early growth performances. Two years old C. obtusa seedlings were planted with the density of $3,900seedlings{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in late March, 2011 at Haeman and Jangseong, Jeollanamdo. In each study site, three plots ($400m^2$ per plot) were established and root collar diameter (mm) and tree height (cm) of each C. obtusa were measured in April, 2011 and October from 2011 to 2013. We also analyzed soil physical and chemical properties of sites and compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa. Although the concentrations of soil nitrogen, organic matter, and C.E.C. at Haenam site were higher than those at Jangseong site, early growth performances of planted C. obtusa at Jangseong site were significantly better than those at Haenam site. The reasons for these results were probably related to deep available soil depth at Jangseong site and relatively low annual precipitation and sea wind at Haenam site, which was adjacent to the sea. The compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa was in the order of needles > current twigs > fine root > stem and branches root above 2 mm in diameter. The phosphorus concentration of needles at Haenam site was significantly higher than that at Jangseong site. The results of this study might be useful for the selection of suitable plantation site for C. obtusa.
Hypocrea disease is the most severe disease of oyster mushroom cultivation in Korea. Physiological and ecological studies were performed on the pathogens (Hypocrea spp.) to obtain basic information for developing the integrated disease management system. Fourteen isolates of Hypocrea were collected from oyster mushroom house in five areas. Pathogenic fungi causing disease of oyster mushroom were identified as Hypocrea sp. based on morphological characteristics and pathogenicity. Two isolates (H-1, H-12) showed the fastest growth at $15^{\circ}C$ but four isolates (H-8, H-9, H-13, H-14) showed slower growth than those of other isolates at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. Stroma with ascocarps and ascospore were produced on PDA under fluorescent light. The five isolates produced stroma with ascocarps and ascospores. Formation of fruiting body of strains H-14 of Hypocrea were the best out of all the strains on the potato dextrose agar (PDA). Also, fruiting bodies and ascospores were completely produced under fluorescent light. The growth of the isolates was correlated with total carbon content. The stroma of the isolates was formed mainly in histidine and asparagine treatment and especially in histidine-70 and asparagine-100 treatment. In the test of pathogenicity, after and before spawning showed very fast incidence of disease.
This study was performed to discover the comparison of the understory species composition and the growth velocity of the regeneration seedlings in Pinus densiflora forests being managed by the seed-tree method from 2008 year. The investigation site located in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do province was established by eighteen quadrats such as six control ones, six slope ones and 6 concave ones, in which we carried out the vegetation survey and measured annual height growth of each seedlings. As a result of vegetation analysis, the understory vegetation of the seed-tree forest area was mainly composed of shrub plants such as Lespedeza bicolor, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Securinega suffruticosa, Lespedeza maximowiczii and Stephanandra incisa, herb plants such as Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Carex humilis var. nana, Spodiopogon sibiricus and Artemisia keiskeana, and vine plants such as Pueraria lobata, Smilax sieboldii, Dioscorea batatas, Actinidia arguta, Vitis amurensis and Rubus crataegifolius. Especially, the vine plants were relatively more imported to the concave site than the control site and the slope site. As a result of measurement of growth velocity, the seedlings of the Pinus densiflora appeared to be 3,175 trees/ha for the non-suppressed trees and 7,842 trees/ha for the suppressed trees. In cases of the concave site, individuals of seedlings were much lower than those on the slope site, probably due to the competition effects of vine plants. Consideringly, silvicultural practices for clearing the vine plants should be inevitably accompanied. Also, the growth velocity of the suppressed and non-suppressed trees has been constantly increasing, those of the non-suppressed trees much higher than the suppressed trees. This represents that the seedlings grow rapidly after the suppressed period with competition to the surrounding plants. Therefore, specific practices such as blush control and vine clear should be carried out at the beginning stage of regeneration in the seed-tree stand.
