  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare the characteristics between adolescents who have run away from home before and who have contemplated running away from home before, and to find risk factors that predict runaway behavior among them. Methods: The data of 「the survey on adolescents' right to adequate housing and the way to ensure their housing with the focus on social exclusion」 by the National Youth Policy Institute (2020) were analyzed. A total of 494 adolescents were included in the study. Descriptive statistics, x2 test, t-test, and simple and multiple logistic regressions were carried out using SAS 9.2. Results: Gender, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and school level were significantly different between the two groups. From the multivariate analysis, the adjusted odds ratio for runaway behavior was significantly higher in male students (AOR: 2.14, p<.001), lower in the middle economic class than in the high economic class (AOR: 0.64, p=.051), lower in the 4th quartile group of self-esteem (AOR: 0.52, p=.041), and higher in high school students (AOR: 1.55, p=.050). Conclusion: Considering that male students, students from wealthier families, students with low self-esteem, and high school students are high-risk groups for runaway behavior, among adolescents who have contemplated running away before, interventions targeting these groups are needed.

Many scholars argue that it is needed social interventions to reduce health gaps between the vulnerable and the privileged in a society, because social inequalities can be caused and resulted health inequality among them. In this context, this article introduces Korean out of school children health check-up as part of the policies to reduce health inequality in the society. For a long time, many out of school children have been alienated from the national health checkup systems. That means they are not only marginalized groups in Korean society, but also excluded from the benefits of health promotion and health management. Many runaway youths are struggling to live by themselves, who are escaped from their families and they don't have enough resources to keep their health. They are also young and low waged workers who are expelled to the streets, while they don't have any support and protection from the communities. Out of school children health checkup has been conducted to the adolescents who stay in the shelters or study in alternative schools. To get meaningful results as the health inequality reduction policy, it is needed to expand out of children health checkup to the runaway teenagers.

  • The main purpose of study is to identify relevance between nature and types of risk factors that delinquent teenagers are exposed and types of methodologies implemented to prevent committing school violence, domestic violence, and suicide or to help recovering from violent activities and suicide attempts. The results show that school dropout has much relevance in risk factors such as probation, lawbreaking, smoking, drinking, runaway, domestic violence victim, and suicidal attempt. Risk rate of school dropout for those teenagers who smoke and drink in the period of runaway is 2.76 times higher than those teenagers who do not smoke or drink. More specifically, drinking increases more risk of school dropout than smoking. Contribution of this study is to identify empirical evidence that calls for comprehensive risk management for delinquent teenagers encompassing home, school, and community rather than focusing on risk itself.

  • The present study investigated the effects of individual, family, school, and community factors on the onset of adolescent runaway behavior. Using the Korean Youth Panel data(n=3,118), discrete-time survival analysis was applied for research purposes. Results showed that the likelihood of onset of adolescent runaway behavior increased sharply during the early middle school years. The variables of self-control, aggression, parents' divorce, paternal abuse, attachment with parents, and number of delinquent peers were associated with the likelihood of runaway behavior. These results suggest that special attention should be paid to adolescents in the early middle school years and that various preventive programs, e.g., aggression and stress management, and peer relations programs, should be developed and implemented.

A total of 1,020 students of a vocational high schook and a 216 adolescents of a special groups(the public institution that consisted with a delinquent young man) completed the questionnaires(risk behavior, 5 protective factors) of compiled by this researcher. The protective factors have selected based on the various prior studies analyzed with adolescent's risk behavior a family functioning, a father(a mother) each and child communication, a self efficacy, and a social support. Statistics appled for the data analysis are Chisqure analysis, two-way ANOVA, and Standard Discrimination analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the special group is higher than the general group in the rate of runaway, smoking, and sexual deviant behavior. Second, the protective factors are not action in the special group have experienced delinquency, but are only action in the general group consisted with the students of a vocational high schools.
