Viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV), the causative agent of viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS), is an epidemic virus of cultured olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea. In the present study, the entire glycoprotein (G) gene including several hypervariable regions from 36 isolates of diverse geographic and host origin and 8 Korean VHSV isolates from cultured olive flounder were analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that most of Asian VHSV belong to the genotype IVa group, suggesting that they originated from a common ancestral virus. Comparative sequence analysis of the complete G protein from Korean VHSV isolates revealed 3 Korean strain-specific nucleotide residues (nucleotide number of G-region: A755, T834 and T1221). These results suggest that Korean VHSV originated from a common ancestor, but these regional specific nucleotide sequences suggest that genetic differences of VHSV are more related to geographic areas than to host fish species.
Currently, the domestic aquaculture industry is pursuing smartization, but it is still proceeding with human subjective judgment in many processes in the aquaculture stage. The prerequisite for the smart aquaculture industry is to effectively grasp the condition of fish in the farm. If real-time monitoring is possible by identifying the number of fish populations, size, pathways, and speed of movement, various forms of automation such as automatic feed supply and disease determination can be carried out. In this study, we proposed an algorithm to identify the state of fish in real time using underwater video data. The fish detection performance was compared and evaluated by applying the latest deep learning-based object detection models, and an algorithm was proposed to measure fish object identification, path tracking, and moving speed in continuous image frames in the video using the fish detection results. The proposed algorithm showed 92% object detection performance (based on F1-score), and it was confirmed that it effectively tracks a large number of fish objects in real time on the actual test video. It is expected that the algorithm proposed in this paper can be effectively used in various smart farming technologies such as automatic feed feeding and fish disease prediction in the future.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a major public health concern and has been identified as a research priority. Clinical research evidence supports that the core cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers for AD, including amyloid-β (Aβ42), total tau (T-tau), and phosphorylated tau (P-tau), reflect key elements of AD pathophysiology. Nevertheless, advances in the clinical identification of new indicators will be critical not only for the discovery of sensitive, specific, and reliable biomarkers of preclinical AD pathology, but also for the development of tests that facilitate the early detection and differential diagnosis of dementia and disease progression monitoring. The early detection of AD in its presymptomatic stages would represent a great opportunity for earlier therapeutic intervention. The chance of successful treatment would be increased since interventions would be performed before extensive synaptic damage and neuronal loss would have occurred. In this study, the importance of developing an early diagnostic method using cognitive decline biomarkers that can discriminate between normal, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD preclinical stages has been emphasized.

The estuary of the Han River constantly suffers from pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms which could cause serious damage to aquatic organisms living there. Despite of this potential risk, it is hard to find any reliable scientific reports on the status of reportable disease infection to the organisms living in this area. In this study, cyprinid fish and crustaceans in Jeonryu-ri, a region of the Han River estuary, were investigated for the infection by representative reportable communicable diseases(SVC, spring viraemia of carp; KHVD, koi herpesvirus disease; EUS, epizootic ulcerative syndrome; WSD, white spot disease) and parasites. Peripheral fish and primary freshwater fish were observed in Jeonryu-ri with cyprinid caught most frequently. Crustaceans were mostly marine species. No positive bands to any of the reportable diseases were produced in any of the fish and crustacean examined in this study by PCR. No trace of Clonorchis sinensis, a liver fluke potential threat to human health, was detected in any of fish samples. However, many fish were infected by metacecaria of other flukes, and other various parasites such as nematode, cestode, copepod, monosite and acanthocephalan. These results suggest that important aquatic organisms in the Han River estuary is not seriously polluted yet. However, it is important to keep monitoring the diseases since the water quality in this region is constantly changing, and devastating influence of infectious diseases is unpredictable. Further, it is required to expand monitoring area toward upstream and increase the number of fish for examination.

The practical monitoring was performed to survey the mortalities in aquaculture farms of olive flounder, rockfish, rainbow trout, Japanese eel, white shrimp and abalone in South Korea from May to November, 2011. The aquatic organism disease inspectors, who have the national licenses for the diagnosis and prevention of aquatic disease and have close relationship with the farms, investigated the rates and causes of mortalities according to the standard manual. In 70 flounder farms, the cumulative mortalities rate was 27.9%, and the mortalities were caused by scuticociliatosis, streptococcosis, VHS, non-infectious loss, vibriosis and gliding bacterial disease. The moralities rate of 30 rockfish farms was 13.6%, and those were mainly contributed by gill flukes and streptococcosis. Most of mortalities of rainbow trout were caused by non-infectious loss and protozoan white spot disease. The mortalities rate of Japanese eel was 0.6% by edwardsiellosis, protozoan white spot disease and gill flukes. The loss rate of white shrimp was 71.2%, and most of them was related with non-infectious ones, such as carnivalization, transportation loss, and the rest was caused by viral white spot disease. The mortalities rate in the abalone farms was 10.7% and all of them were related with non-infectious loss.
Recent developments of smart phone and ICT, and explosive developments of wireless sensor area drive radical changes on traditional health care service. To accommodate the changes, many researchers have studied to expand traditional healthcare service areas including home care for independent living and public care for preventive and collaborative wellness area. This study proposes a research framework for healthcare information technology area based on Mettler and Raptis's(2012) work. Then, the study analyze the research trends in the area based on the framework. The area of monitoring patients health status at home using smart phone, providing innovative healthcare service by out-patients monitoring, and implementing preventive healthcare services are identified most active and emerging research agenda. It is expected that the research framework and implications of this study can assist future research efforts and practical utilization of healthcare information technologies.
Paenibacillus larvae is a gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium that is etiological agent for american foulbrood disease (AFB), which is the most severe disease in honey bee. To detect P. larvae from infected honeybee-comb or larvae, polyclonal antibody against whole bacterium was produced from guineapig and its specificity was evaluated. After optimization of ELISA-based detection system using these antibodies, a number of different P. larvae strains were analysed. Polyclonal antibody against P. larvae ATCC 25747 showed high affinity to most strains of P. larvae including P. larvae. strain ATCC 9545 (type strain), ATCC 25747 and other korean strain, SJl5 but exhibited no cross-reaction with other bacterial species. Additionally, this type of ELISA system was used for the detection of AFB in field-application The results have shown that this antibody could be useful for the rapid identification and monitoring of P. larvae in honeybee-comb.

Helicopter-borne aeromagnetic surveys at two different times separated by three years were conducted to better understand the shallow subsurface structure of the Vulcano and Lipari volcanic complex, Aeolian Islands, southern Italy, and also to monitor the volcanic activity of the area. As there was no meaningful difference between the two magnetic datasets to imply an apparent change of the volcanic activity, the datasets were merged to produce an aeromagnetic map with wider coverage than was given by a single dataset. Apparent magnetisation intensity mapping was applied to terrain-corrected magnetic anomalies, and showed local magnetisation highs in and around Fossa Cone, suggesting heterogeneity of the cone. Magnetic modelling was conducted for three of those magnetisation highs. Each model implied the presence of concealed volcanic products overlain by pyroclastic rocks from the Fossa crater. The model for the Fossa crater area suggests a buried trachytic lava flow on the southern edge of the present crater. The magnetic model at Forgia Vecchia suggests that phreatic cones can be interpreted as resulting from a concealed eruptive centre, with thick latitic lavas that fill up Fossa Caldera. However, the distribution of lavas seems to be limited to a smaller area than was expected from drilling results. This can be explained partly by alteration of the lavas by intense hydrothermal activity, as seen at geothermal areas close to Porto Levante. The magnetic model at the north-eastern Fossa Cone implies that thick lavas accumulated as another eruption centre in the early stage of the activity of Fossa. Recent geoelectric surveys showed high-resistivity zones in the areas of the last two magnetic models.
Anaplasmosis is a rickettsial zoonosis mediated by blood-sucking arthropods, such as ticks, flies, and mosquitos. Migratory birds are common hosts of ticks that are mediators of anaplasmosis, in particular, the tick infection rate in thrushes (family Turdidae) has been known to be high. The main purpose of this study is to survey the occurrence and prevalence of Anaplasma spp. from the migratory thrushes in Jeju island. We collected blood samples from 6 thrushes rescued at the Jeju Wildlife Rescue Center and from 34 wild-caught thrushes on Mara island which is a satellite island of Jeju. As a result, the nested PCR confirmed that seven out of 40 individuals (17.5%) were infected by Anaplasma spp. and all of them were identified as A. phagocytophilum based on sequences obtained from partial 16S rRNA. All the infected birds were on their northward migration in spring, our results suggest that the Turdidae family, which is a common and abundant migrant group passing through Jeju island, may act a role as active reservoir and disperser of A. phagocytophilum causing potential influx of the zoonotic pathogens from its wintering grounds in lower latitude to the mainland Korea as well as Jeju.
