  • This study experimentally investigates effect of boiling heat transfer when ultrasonic vibration was applied. Under the wall temperature condition, temperature distribution in a cavity was measured during the boiling process and heat transfer coefficient of convection, sub-tooled boiling and saturated boiling states were measured with and without ultrasonic vibration, respectively. Also, the profiles of the pressure distribution in acoustic field measured by a hydrophone were compared with the augmentation ratios of heat transfer calculated by local heat transfer coefficient. Result of this study, heat transfer coefficient and augmentation ratio of heat transfer is higher with ultrasonic waves than without one. Especially, augmentation ratio of heat transfer is more increased the convection state than sub-cooled boiling and saturated boiling states. Acoustic pressure is relatively higher near ultrasonic transducer than other points where is no installed it and affects the augmentation ratio of heat transfer.

  • An oscillatory motion of natural convection in a two-dimensional square enclosure fitted with a horizontal partition is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was positioned perpendicularly at the mid-height of one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were carried out with the variations of the partition length and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). As the results, an oscillatory motion of natural convection has perfectly shown the periodicity with the decrease of Rayleigh number, and the stability was reduced to a chaotic state with the increase of Rayleigh number. The period of oscillation gets shorten with the decrease of the partition length and the increase of Rayleigh number. The frequency of oscillation obtained by the variations of stream function is more similar to the experimental results than that of the average Nusselt number. The stability of oscillation grows worse with the increase of Rayleigh number. The transition Rayleigh number for the chaos is gradually decreased with the increase of the partition length.

  • Transition of flows in natural convection in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.2. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped eddy flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. After the first Hopf bifurcation, however, a reverse transition from oscillatory to a steady flow occurs by the flow pattern variation. Hysteresis phenomenon occurs between the solution branches of up-scan and down-scan stages, and dual solutions with one steady and one oscillatory flow are found. Overall Nusselt of the flows at the flows at the down-scan stage is greater than that at the up-scan stage.

  • This study investigates the bifurcation sequence to chaos in a horizontal annulus with a constant heat flux wall. After the first Hopf bifurcation from a steady to a simple time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, quasi-periodic flows with two or three incommensurable frequencies appear. A reverse transition from a quasi-periodic flow to a simple periodic flow is observed with increase of Rayleigh number. And finally, chaotic convection is established after appearance of three incommensurable frequencies at a high Rayleigh number. Simple periodic flows exist between quasi periodic flows. The transition route to chaos of the present simulations follows the Ruelle-Takens route.

  • A cooling mechanism using acoustic streaming by ultrasonic vibrations and associated convective heat transfer enhancement is investigated experimentally and analytically. Acoustic streaming pattern and associated heat transfer characteristics are presented. Analytical transient temperature profile of the heated plate following Nyborgs theory is accomplished along with experimental measurement. A temperature drop of 30 C is obtained in 4 minutes with vibration amplitude of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As the vibration amplitude is further increased to 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ a temperature drop of 40 C is achieved that is the maximum temperature drop obtained with the current experimental apparatus. Analytical heat transfer solutions verified a temperature drop of 4$0^{\circ}C$ with a vibration amplitude of 25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 28.4 kHz which is experimentally obtained.

  • Intraseasonal variability of the tropical convection over the Indian/western Pacific is studied using the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite high cloud amount. This study is directed to find the tropical-extratropical interaction in the frequency range of intraseasonal and interannual variabilities of the summer monsoon occured over the domain of 90E-171W and 495-50N. Especially, in order to investigate the intraseasonal interaction of last Asia summer monsoon associated with the tropical convections in the high cloud amounts, the spatial and time structure of the intraseasonal oscillation for the movement-and the evolution of the large-scale connections are studied. To describe the spatial and the time evolution, the extended empirical orthogonal function analysis is applied. The first mode may be considered to a normal structure, indicating that the strong convection band over 90E-120E is extended to sastward but this mode was detected as the intraseasonal variability during summer monsoon. It is found that the dominant intraseasonal mode of the tropical convection consists of the spatial changes over a broad period range centered around 40~50days.

  • Vacuum chamber or vacuum tube for the exhaust process of vacuum glazing is presently used, where excessive time and expenses are required to make the whole vacuum chamber or tube vacuum. To solve this problem, multifunction equipment for vacuum exhaust and ultrasonic joining at atmospheric pressure has been developed, in which a piezoelectric vibrator experiences excessive temperature rise resulting in optimizing the cooling of the equipment. Therefore, in this study, cooling effects of natural convection and forced convection methods were identified by numerical analysis and experiments, and cooling performance of the multifunction equipment was optimized.

  • Thermal convection in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the bifurcation phenomena of flows from time-periodic to chaotic convection are numerically investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-tripling bifurcation occurs with further increase of the Rayleigh number. Chaotic convection is established after a period-doubling bifurcation. A periodic convection with period 4 appears after the first chaotic convection. At still higher Rayleigh numbers, chaotic flows reappear.

  • Comprehensive numerical computations are made of side-heated squire cavity which is exposed to zero mean g-jitter. Numerical solutions are acquires to the governing two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for a Boussinesq fluid. When the system is exposed to pure sinusoidal g-jitter inclined to the vertical axis, in spite of zero mean gravity there exist non zero net flow fields [8]. The resonance phenomenon are observed in moderate Rayleigh number. And, by comprehensive numerical work, unlike[5], it is found that they are related with the overshoot phenomenon of the sudden gravity up problem.
