  • Cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) is introduced and used for the identification of structural dynamic model. CMAC has fascinating features in learning speed. It can learn structural response within a few seconds. Therefore it is suitable for the real time identification structures. Real time identification is required in the control of structure which may be damaged or undergo severe change in mechanical properties due to shrinkage or relaxation etc. In numerical examples, it is shown that CMAC trained with the dynamic response of three-story building can predict responses under not trained earthquakes with allowable error. Finally, CMAC has great potential in structural and control engineering.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate seismic reduction performance and applicability of 3-dimensional floor isolation system to the main control room of nuclear power plant. A friction pendulum system(FPS) and air spring were designed and fabricated for 3-dimensional floor isolation system. Two kind of the partial experimental model of a main control room attached to the FPS and air spring were tested on the shaking table. The experimental model consisted of a control panel, a $2.5m{\times}2.5m$ access floor, four FPS and air springs. The artificial time histories based on the vertical and horizontal floor response spectrums(OBE, SSE) of the main control room were used as the earthquake input signals in the test. Compared to non-isolated system, the seismic response of experimental models using 3-dimensional floor isolation system were shown considerable seismic reduction performance.

  • Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

  • The seismic isolation systems could be used to reduce the seismic response of a structure. The natural period of a structure with seismic isolation system got be long to avoid the prominent seismic period. The purpose of this study is to analyzed the seismic behavior of the truss arch that is supported to column with LRB. Truss arch structures subjected to horizontal seismic have large horizontal and vertical response unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When seismic load is applied to the truss arch with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the truss arch is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced. Also, the seismic behaviors of the truss arch with strengthen column as like lattice column are very similar to that of the truss arch supported to directly foundation. The Seismic Isolation system can be applied to reduce efficiently the seismic response of the spacial structure with not strong column.

  • This paper presents a hybrid control system combining lead rubber bearings and hydraulic actuators for seismic response control of a cable stayed bridge. Because multiple control devices are operating, a hybrid control system could improve the control performances. However, the overall system robustness may be impacted negatively by additional active control devices. Therefore, a secondary on-off type controller according to the responses of lead rubber bearings is combined with LQG algorithm to improve the controller robustness. Numerical simulation results show that control performances of the hybrid system controlled by an on off type LQG algorithm are improved compared to those of the passive and active control systems and are similar to those of performance oriented hybrid system controlled by a LQG algorithm with the similar peak and normed control forces. Furthermore, it is verified that the hybrid system with an on-off type LQG controller is more robust for stiffness matrix perturbation than conventional hybrid control of system, and there are no signs of instability in the overall system. The proposed control system also maintains the control performance under not only the design earthquakes but also the other earthquakes. Therefore, the hybrid control system using on-off type LQG algorithm could be proposed as an improved control strategy for seismically excited cable-stayed bridges containing many uncertainties.

  • Increasing flexibility and lightness of recently built high-rise buildings make the structures susceptible to loads such as earthquakes and winds. Therefore, higher performance vibration control systems to reduce the vibration levels are demanded more than any time in the past. One of the typical active vibration control systems is the active mass driver (AMD). In this paper, an active vibration control system consisting of small shaking table, building model, sensors, signal processing board and AMD is constructed. The dynamic characteristics of these individual systems are investigated through the experimental study. The performance of the active vibration control system is verified through the El Centro earthquake(1940,NS) on the building model.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of a LQG Hybrid controller to suppress the earthquake disturbance for the building structure. The ground acceleration of N-S component of El-Centro earthquake was scaled to confirm that the building behaved within the elastic range. The tuned mass damper(TMD) on the top floor regulated by LQG algorithm was designed to control the floor displacements. The displacement responses of the hybrid control were compared with those obtained from an active control along with a passive control. The results showed that the LQG hybrid control used approximately 50% less input forces than an active control to satisfy the performance criteria.
