  • Wind load or snow load, acting on agricultural structures is working more sensitive than any other load and therefore plays an important role in determination of design loads of agricultural structures. In this study, unit snow weight, greatest gust speed and depth of snow fall were analyzed and applied to determine the amount of frames. The unit snow weights were statistically classified and calculated in the basis of mean temperature and showed considerable differences between the unit snow weights at below and above -1$^{\circ}C$. Equations for estimating greatest gust speed with fastest wind speed were developed for inland and seaside districts. The calculated values from developed equations were little higher than those from the current equation in general. The difference between the depths of snow cover and snow fall, which shows the possibility of reduction of design loads under the adequate management. Design wind speed estimated by a modified equation suggested the amount of frames less than those by current one, and the depth of snow fall as a design snow depth suggested the amount of frames more than those of snow cover. Therefore, it is very important to select the adequate design values considering the characteristics of agricultural structures.

  • The major objective of this study was to quantify the effects of substrate depth and substrate composition on the development of sedum etc., in a sloped rooftop (6 : 12 pitch) environment during a 4-year period. The experiment was conducted from 2006 October to 2010 December under several conditions without soil erosion control : two substrate depth (5cm, 10cm), four substrate composition (A5N3C2, A3N3C4, A6C4, G5L3C2: A: artificial lightweight soil, N : natural soil, G : granite decomposed soil, C : leave composite, L : loess), four sloped roof direction ($E40^{\circ}W$, $W40^{\circ}N$, $S40^{\circ}W$, $N40^{\circ}E$). In this experiment 4 sedum etc., were used: Sedum sarmentosum, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum rupestre, Sedum telephium, flowering herbs (mixed seed : Taraxacum platycarpum, Lotus corniculatus, Aster yomena, Aster koraiensis), western grasses (mixed seed : Tall fescue, Creeping redfescue, Bermuda grass, Perennial ryegrass). The establishment factor had two levels : succulent shoot establishment (sedum), seeding (flowering herbs, western grasses). 1. Enkamat, as it bring about top soil exfoliation, was unsuitable material for soil erosion control. 2. Sedum species exhibited greater growth at a substrate depth of 10cm relative to 5cm. All flowering herbs and western grasses established only at a substrate depth of 5cm were died. A substrate depth of 5cm was not suited in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance. If additional soil erosion control will be supplemented, a substrate depth of 10cm in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance was considered suitable. 3. For all substrate depth and composition, the most abundant species was Sedum kamtschaticum. The percentage of surviving Sedum kamtschaticum was 73.4% at a substrate depth of 10cm in autumn 2007 one year after the roof vegetation had been established. But the percentage of surviving other sedum were 33.3%~51.9%, therefor mulching for soil erosion control was essential after rooftop establishment in extensive sloped roof greening was proved. To raise the ratio of plant survival, complete establishment of plant root at substrate was considered essential before rooftop establishment. 4. There was a significant interaction between biomass and substrate moisture content. There were also a significant difference of substrate moisture and erosion among substrate composition. The moisture content of A6C4 was highest, the resistance to erosion of A5N3C2 was highest among substrate composition. The biomass of plants were not significantly higher in A5N3C2 and A6C4 relative to A3N3C4 and G5L3C2, For substrate moisture and erosion resistance, A5N3C2 and A6C4 were considered suitable in sloped rooftop greening without maintenance. 5. There were significant difference among roof slope direction on the substrate moisture. Especially, the substrate moisture content of $S40^{\circ}W$ was lower relative to that of $N40^{\circ}E$, that guessed by solar radiation and erosion.

  • The feasibility of the Natural and Ecological Wastewater treatment System (NEWS) was examined for rural wastewater treatment in Korea. The intermittent trickling biofilter with high hydrophilic filter media was used for pretreatment for suspended solids and organic pollutants. The subsequent constructed wetland with porous granule materials was used for promoting nutrient removal. The results show that the removal efficiencies of the system were high with respect to the water quality parameters except COD. Even if the effluent from the biofilter did not meet the guidelines for wastewater treatment plant effluent in Korea in terms of $BOD_5$ and TN, the final effluent of the system meets the guidelines us to good performance of the constructed wetland. The regression analysis between pollutant loading rate and removal rate indicated that the system could have stable removal for SS, $BOD_5$, TN, and TP in the given influent ranges. The analysis in the winter period indicated that the wetland covered with transparent polycarbonate glass had the statble performance during the winter period dus to increase of temperature inside the wetland without any heating system. With the stable performance, effective poilutant removal, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, the NEWS could be considered as an alternative treatment system for decentralized regions and rural communities in Korea.

  • A model for evaluating radioactive contamination in the urban environment, named METRO-K, was developed as a basic step for accident consequence analysis in case of an accidental release. The three kind of radionuclides $(^{137}Cs,\;^{106}Ru,\;^{131}I)$ and the different chemical forms of iodine (particulate, organic and elemental forms) are considered in the model. The radioactive concentrations are evaluated for the five types of surface (roof, paved road, wall, lawn/soil, tree) as a function of time. Using the model, the contaminative impacts of the surfaces were intensively investigated with respect to with and without precipitation during the measurement periods of radionuclides in air. In addition, a practical application study was conducted using $^{137}Cs$ concentration in air and precipitation measured in an European country at the Chernobyl accident. As a result precipitation was an influential factor in surface contamination. The degree of contamination was strongly dependent on the types of radionuclide and surface. Precipitation was more influential in contamination of $^{137}Cs$ than that of $^{131}I$ (elemental form).

  • The Myeonbongsan caldera, 10.2X8.0 km, developed within older sequences of sedimentary formations and intermediate composition volcanis in the southern Cheongsong area. Volcanic rocks in the caldera block include lower intermediate volcanics, middle tuffaceous sequences and upper silicic ones. The silicic volcanics, which is named Myeonbongsan Tuff, are composed of crystal-rich ash-flow tuff(300 m) , bedded tuff(30 m) and pumice-rich ash-flow tuff(700 m) in ascending order. Several intrusions dominate the early sequences within the caldera. The caldera collapsed in a trapdoor type when silicic ash-flow tuffs erupted fro major vent area in the caldera. Normal faulting along a ring fault system except the southwestern part dropped the tuffs down to the northrase with a maximum displacement of about 820 m. The Myeonbongsan Tuff is just about 1,030 m thick inside the northeastern caldera, with its base not exposed, and southwestward thinning down. Rhyolitic plug and ring dikes are emplaced along the central vent and the caldera margins, and the ring dikes are cut by plutonic stocks in the southeastern and northwestern parts. The caldera volcanism eviscerated the magma chamber by a series of explosive eruptions during which silicic magma was erupted to form the Myeonbongsan Tuff. Following the last ash-flow eruption, collapse of the chamber roof resulted in the formation of the Myeonbongsan caldera, a subcircular trapdoor-type depression subsiding about 820 m deep. After the collapse, stony to flow-banded rhyolites were emplaced as circular plugs and ring dikes along the central vent and the caldera margins respectively. Finally after the intrusions, another plutons were emplaced as stocks outside the caldera.

  • This study examines the isolation-heat performance of fire proof fabric that is equipped over ceiling board in order to secure the capability of arresting the spread of a fire at roof 'Jucsim' structure of Wooden Cultural Properties. For this examination, I conduct experiments with the model and compare two construction methods of fire proof fabric, or flat-type, folding-type. The experiments show the following results. In case of installing the fire proof fabric in flat-type, when the temperature under the ceiling board is $750^{\circ}C$, the temperatures over the ceiling board is $50^{\circ}C$; the difference is $700^{\circ}C$. Compared with the case of removing fire proof fabric, the temperature over the ceiling board is lower by approximately $580^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Therefore it can be said that the construction of fire proof fabric enhances the isolation-heat performance. In case of installing the fire proof fabric in folding-type, when the temperature under the ceiling board is $600^{\circ}C$, the temperatures over the ceiling board is $65^{\circ}C$; the difference is approximately $530^{\circ}C$. Thus its isolation-heat performance is a little inferior to the flat-type equipment.

  • Buddhism and Buddhist art originated in India, but when they were introduced to different countries, they created an international environment. Buddhism was introduced as cultural package, with written texts, visual images, rituals, and the organization of monasteries. Buddhist art originated in India during the reign of King Asoka and then was developed under the political, intellectual, artistic, religious, social and natural environments of the regions. The stupa and the chaitya halls create monastic environment. The natural environment of the trade routes and caravans in the Central Asian deserts preserved brilliant-colored murals and helped spread tram India to China. When Buddhism and Buddhist art were introduced to China, Korea, and Japan, Buddhism became a part of government institution and social organization. Gigantic statues were carved in caves in mountains for political purposes. The Chinese transformed the stupa into a square pillar and created pagodas with tiled roofs in tower forms. Koreans not only transmitted the Buddhist art from China to Japan, but it also changed it with originality in the iconography of the pensive bodhisattva images and in the architecture of Seoggulam. The official ideology of Neo Confucian philosophy brought the rise of Chan Buddhism. Zen monasteries in Japan created unique environments by establishing the Zen Buddhist garden. to prompt believers to meditate. An important development in Buddhist art is the Esoteric Buddhist art in China and Tibet. This category belongs to the intellectual, religious as well as artistic environments. The Tibetan deities with consorts in their embrace symbolize the union of the god and the devotees. Buddhist art created a unique environment that was spread out to many nations and changed greatly over time.

  • In the 21st yearly session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Paris, France, in December 2015, the "Paris Agreement" was negotiated; this is a new global agreement on the reduction of climate change, which encourages every country to participate in countermeasures for global climate change. Along with such movements, the electric railway sector has also been actively engaged in low carbon technology. This paper studied the building of a 1.5MW photovoltaic power generation system using the rooftop of the Gwangmyeong Station Building, which is the largest roof among the high-speed railway station buildings in Korea; this station has passenger traffic that reached about 7 million in 2014. For this study, we configured an optimized photovoltaic (PV) power generation system and then estimated the expected annual energy production by using PV system software; we also calculated the expected revenue that could be obtained by linking this source to the power distribution system. The obtained data were used to analyze the contribution of low-carbon energy that could be obtained by introducing a PV power generation system on the roof of an electric railway station building.

  • Since 1970s, urethane waterproofing method is broadly used in rooftops, underground spaces, and sports stadium for its outstanding ultraviolet blockage, watertightness, and elasticity. However, development of slippage-resistance and endurance, improvement of function considering convenience and visually pleasing of users, urethane waterproofing method is necessary, since rooftops and underground spaces have slippage and external force risks. Therefore, many improved waterproofing methods are being developed and, recently, embo-thane waterproofing method, which applies embo-spray coating system, has been developed. This paper explains exposure, nonexposure, and floor-material of embo-thane waterproofing method, and then perform experimental study for comparison with urethane waterproofing method about tensile strength, coefficient of expansion, performance of bond, anti-abrasion, and slippage-resistance. In addition, the performance index was presented for the superiority of embo-thane waterproofing method compared to urethane by setting up evaluation criteria considering not only physical performance but also design side of embo-thane waterproofing method, and Value Analysis applying AHP. Also for an assessment considering uncertain result, Monte Carlo Simulation Method was used to operate reliability analysis through statistic approach method.
