A Survey on the 3rd and 4th Grade Teachers' Perception and Teaching Practices towards Open-ended Question in the Elementary Mathematics Textbook (초등학교 3, 4학년 수학 교과서의 '열린 질문'에 대한 교사들의 인식 및 지도 실태 조사)

  • In this study, we surveyed on the 3rd and 4th grade teachers' perception and teaching practices towards open-ended question in the elementary mathematics textbook in the revised 7th curriculum. According to the result, teachers understood the purpose of open-ended question in general, but they recognized some problems in terms of open-ended question itself, difficulties found when they dealt with open-ended question in their classes, teacher's guide and teacher training. This research suggests ways of improvement of open-ended question on the basis of the survey results.

  • In school mathematics, the concept of continuous functions has been intuitively taught. Many researches reported that many students identified the continuity of function with the connectedness of the graphs. Several researchers proposed some ideas which are enhancing the formal aspects of the definition as alternative. We analysed the historical developments of the concept of continuous functions and drew pedagogical implications for the intuitive teaching of continuous functions from the result of analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the United States Elementary Mathematics textbooks "Everyday Mathematics", focused on area of the probability. The concept of probability as qualitative probability is taught from Kindergarten in EM curricula for progressive mathematising. EM have reflected both perspectives in probability which are a frequency perspective and a classical perspective. And EM includes abundant activities for remedying the misconceptions of probability. On the basis of the results from this analysis, we have five suggestions which are helpful for the revision of the Korean national curriculum.

  • 지도 점검이란 경비업체의 불법행위를 예방하거나 경비업법 위반사항을 적발, 단속하는 것이라 할 수 있지만 이러한 역할 뿐만이 아니라 "경비업법"의 기본취지인 경비업의 육성 및 발전을 할 수 있도록 적정한 행정지도를 병행해야 하고, 감독자의 객관적 판단으로 올바른 행정목적을 달성할 수 있게 경비업자를 견인해야 할 필요성이 있다. 때문에 이 연구에서는 사전교육의 필요성과 사전서류검토 후 현장에서 감독으로의 역할, 현장 지도점검 시 담당 경찰관의 주관적 행정처분에 대한 개선방안, 현장 지도 점검 시 집중적 단속에 대한 개선방안, 민간경비원의 신분증으로서 경비원 신임교육 이수증의 활용방안을 개선방안으로 제시하였다.

A Study on Teaching Perpendicularity and Parallelity in Elementary School Mathematics (초등학교 수학에서 수직과 평행의 지도 방안 탐색)

  • Perpendicularity and parallelity are important concepts in Mathematics as well as real-life contexts. However, those concepts are rather reduced in 2015 revised curriculum compared to previous 2009 revised curriculum. This study firstly analyzed teaching method related to perpendicularity and parallelity in a series of mathematics textbooks of Korea, Singapore and Japan. Moreover, the unit of perpendicularity and parallel was redesigned in a way to understand the concepts meaningfully and to give opportunities for students to explore how to make perpendicular and parallel lines. The results showed that noticeable changes has been as the curriculum was revised in Korea. Also, three countries showed some differences in concepts definition and learning activities. This study is expected to suggest implications for how to teach perpendicularity and parallelity in elementary school mathematics.

Korean middle school students' conception of function (우리나라 중학생의 함수 개념화 특성)

  • Since the 7th revision of national mathematics curriculum, it has been recommended that the concept of function be introduced based on the dependent relation between variables. The 2009 revision of national mathematics curriculum shares this way of conceptualizing function. In this context, this study analyzes the effect of this revision of the mathematics curriculum on middle school students' conceptualization of function. To be specific, this study investigates the characteristics of students' conceptualization of function through task-based in-depth interviews. It also investigates how teachers introduce function through interview. The analysis show that the middle school students had a lack of understanding about dependent relation in function. The teachers also had difficulties in teaching concept of function based on dependent relation. In the conclusion, this study makes some suggestions for teaching the function in middle school classes.

  • To survive in the highly competitive environment, a vocational education institution must offer its students an attractive system of competency based vocational education. A first-term freshman at university and college should also be allowed to adjust the course selection Early exposure within one or more fields of study creates a high level of enthusiasm which helps students maintain their motivation. It also helps students decide if course selection is right for career choice and they should be provided a large number of diverse occupational opportunities later In this paper, we discuss how to activate the vocational education. Also we developed vocational guidance program for course selection through the subject for vocational guidance and the learning map for learning plan. This program was assessed through the survey on opinions of freshman.

  • In this study, we conducted classroom activities that are exploring and explaining visualized materials for problem solving of school mathematics with pre-service teachers in 2007~2009. After finishing these classroom activities, pre-service teachers recorded an afternote that includes changes of their thinking about mathematics and mathematics education through these activities in this study. We collected various opinions of pre-service mathematics teachers. From the analysis these data, we searched educational effects of our classroom activities. Through conducting the practice like these classroom activities of our study, pre-service mathematics teachers will have an opportunity of a practical training that supports the teaching of mathematical problem-solving. Moreover their PCK will be enhanced. Also, They will learn a good way to realize the aim of school mathematics curriculum.

  • The signs have been used as the world-wide common language. Because all units have their own meanings, their usage should be kept correctly. This paper shows how middle school students know and keep the usage of SI units. And this paper shows the necessity of teaching the students correct units in their schools.

  • Korean students are taught area formulas of parallelogram and triangle by inductive reasoning in current curriculum. Inductive thinking is a crucial goal in mathematics education. There are, however, many problems to understand area formula inductively. In this study, those problems are illuminated theoretically and investigated in the class of 5th graders. One way to teach area formulas is suggested by means of process of problem solving with transforming figures.
