  • Porosity paper evidence is encountered in case of forgery, kidnapping, fraud and terrorist activity. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of three chemical reagents (Ninhydrin, 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), Iodine fuming) to the quality of developed latent fingerprints on porosity printing papers and newspaper. In case of printing papers, print quality was better with Iodine fuming method than Ninhydrin and DFO treatment to developing latent fingerprints. Developing latent fingerprint on newspapers was achieved with Iodine fuming processing. The processing of Iodine fuming followed by DFO and by using blue light (orange red filter) exhibited better results with Iodine fuming. Enhancement of latent fingerprint detection image using Digital Imaging System was achieved.

  • We identify the enhancement effects of zinc chloride and liquid nitrogen on low quality ninhydrin-developed fingerprint and we wanted to find out another cooling methods available for ninhydrin/Zn fingerprint enhancement besides the liquid nitrogen, which is hard to access. Artificial sweat was used to make the same level of fingerprints, and fingerprints developed by each technique were evaluated by SWGFAST standard and compared the average score and standard deviation. As a result of the experiment, ninhydrin/Zn-liquid nitrogen got 3.2 and 3.3 as average scores that enough to identify an individual such as 1,2-IND/Zn or DFO. Also, experiments using dry ice instead of liquid nitrogen as a way of the ninhydrin/Zn-developed fingerprints enhancement resulted in 3.0 and 2.9 as average scores, therefore, it was confirmed that dry ice is also a sufficient cooling method to be considered in practice in the field of forensic science.

  • As the tangible evidence, documentary art records are permanent records to reflect the historical, symbolical, cultural and artistic value. Also, documentary art records are related with mission fulfillment of public institution and it is documentary with administrative, cultural and artistic values as the works of documentary production and application of the administrative image. "The public records management law" was the first time that administration documents were incorporated and in the act No. 3 of administrative records management, the preservation and management system of documentary art records became legislated. The management of documentary art records are difficult to categorize only by the reflect of characteristics or materials. Because documentary art records are collected in many ways and made with materials. It needs to be collected with many informations on basic materials and with the appropriate conservation and management category. Documentary art records do not have lots of demands but the level of consciousness is improving and the possibility of opening to public is increasing for improvement with the right to know. In near future, the documentary art records will be used for the interpretation of historical and cultural preservation and modern cultural heritage could have the value as it is expected. Primarily to prevent deterioration on documentary art records the standard survey card should be made to categorize the damage rate and to check the status on each documentary art records. In addition, establishing a systematic management plan for various documentary art records are needed with the training of professionals for the conservation of documentary art records.

  • The archival objects are tangible evidence reflecting public work as forming archives which are administrative, historic, symbolic, cultural and artistic value. They are produced from the various countries so that they have different material and manufacture techniques. However there are difficulties in conservation and management because the material investigation and conservation management system are not established. Therefore this research presents fundamental data for the efficient conservation management by material investigation and condition check metal archival objects. Among the public official presents made of metal, 12 pieces which are discoloration, oxidation, loss or crack are chosen for this research. In order to examine extensive condition of metal archival objects, the condition check card used from the domestic museum and the national museum in Japan are collected and then the new check card is produced. X-ray is used to know the making technique, binding means between different material. Portable-XRF is also used for the chemical composition analysis of metal archival objects, and then classifying respectively according to their material. As a result of condition check, it is possible to investgate the appearance character, deteriorated parts and weak parts of structure. Also P-XRF could find out the composition of metal archival objects which is different from existing condition check card. Therefore the research results can be used as fundamental data for further conservation and management as well as long-term conservation.

  • Identification of paint on victim's clothing and a vehicle are valuable for forensic examination when investigating hit-and-run accidents. Automotive paints on clothes are used to prove a victim caused by traffic accident and to identify a suspected vehicle. The comparison of transferred paints between victim's vehicle and suspected vehicle can be an important evidence in reconstructing the accident situation and in discovering the truth. The paints such as white, yellow, red, blue, or black are hard to examine particle shape under a stereomicroscope because of it is not included aluminum, pearl, and mica flakes in the pigments. The aim of this study under forensic aspect is to compare pigment among basecoat layers of solid paints by identifying inorganic elemental compositions and binder resins of pigments using by micro-FT-IR and micro-XRF spectrometer. The pigment samples were analyzed by using two methods of FT-IR: Reflectance and ATR method. Two methods of FT-IR were useful in discriminating binder resins of pigments by comparing characteristic peaks and patterns of spectra. Also, XRF spectrometer could identify the elemental compositions in inorganic pigments of trace paints which are difficult to compare the identification by FT-IR.

  • Blood is a commonly found body fluid at crime scenes, and plays an important role in identifying suspects and in the reconstruction of crime scenes. Although serological detection of blood has been widely used in the field of forensic science, research on the detection of old bloodstains is scarce. This work aimed to compare various methods for the detection of old bloodstains and validate the reliability of their results. Four presumptive tests-Tetramethylbenzidine, $Bluestar^{(R)}$, Leucomalachite Green, Kastle-Meyer tests-and two confirmatory tests-Fecal Occult Blood (FOB) and Rapid Stain $Identification^{(TM)}-Blood$ ($RSID^{TM}-Blood$) tests-were compared. Bloodstain samples from post-mortem cases were collected on gauzes and then stored at room temperature for periods from 7 to 30 years. All the presumptive tests were positive, even for the 30-year-old sample. However, FOB and $RSID^{TM}-Blood$ provided false negative results for some samples stored for 17 years or more (1988 to 2001). The results indicate that FOB and $RSID^{TM}-Blood$ are not reliable for the detection of old bloodstains. These findings can be useful in the selection of an appropriate detection method for serological testing of old bloodstains. In addition, the information will be useful background knowledge when applied in the field of forensic practice.

  • The archival objects are tangible evidence related to the public service. They are unique and offer information representing the specific events, time or person. The archival objects as modern cultural heritage do not have the guideline to classify, manage and conserve them. Especially, it is difficult to apply general conservation process for burial artifacts, because there are few study example of conservation for metal archival objects and they have complex administrative value. We tried to find suitable material and application method for consolidation of copper alloy archival object. We choose three kinds of wax and acrylic resin for burial artifacts and had done comparative analysis of their characterizations following kinds and coating methods. As a result of evaluation by several surface analysis such as optical microscope, measuring film thickness, adhesive strength, contact angle and yellowing test, acrylic resin can use to archival objects of copper alloy, effectively but the method of heating after dip-coating with Wax B used before can get best effect of consolidation.

  • A distribution study of glitter was conducted from a local university building. The potential recipient surfaces chosen were the 1,000 chairs kept in 16 separate classrooms of the building. The surface of chairs contacting with buttocks and back of users were tape lifted with commercial adhesive tapes, and the surface of adhesive tapes were examined with a stereomicroscope to locate the glitters. 12 glitter particles were found from 11 chairs kept in 16 classrooms of a building. This result indicates that the possibility of glitter finding from Korean violent crime scene is high. The 12 glitters found from the chairs were analyzed with a stereomicroscope and an FTIR spectrophotometer to find the matching glitter. The stereomicroscope was used for the observation of the shapes, dimensions, colors and holograms of each glitter, and the FTIR spectrophotometer was used for the analysis of the chemical composition of the coating material of each glitter. The examination results revealed that 8 glitters out of 12 glitters were not sharing the common origin each other. Also, two glitters found from two separate classroom chairs share common microscopic and FTIR spectroscopic characteristics which indicating two glitters share common origin. The record of the students who had used the classrooms was traced and the authors could find that the classrooms where the same glitters were found were shared by a group of students who listen to the same class. This result implies that the path of the involved people should be considered while assessing the value of trace evidence.

  • Photography is the most commonly used method of documenting the crime and incident scene as it helps maintaining chain of custody (COC) and prove integrity of the physical evidence. It can also capture phenomena as they are. However, digital images can be manipulated and lose their authenticity as admissible evidence. Thus only limited techniques can be used to enhance images, and one of them is Fourier transform. Fourier transform refers to transformation of images into frequency signals. Fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used in this study. In this experiment, we overlapped fingerprints with graph paper or other fingerprints and separated the fingerprints. Then we evaluated and compared quality of the separated fingerprints to the original fingerprints, and examined whether the two fingerprints can be identified as same fingerprints. In the case of the fingerprints on graph paper and general pattern-overlapping fingerprints, fingerprint ridges are enhanced. On the other hand, in case of separating complicated fingerprints such as core-to-core overlapping and delta-to-delta overlapping fingerprints, quality of fingerprints can be deteriorated. Quality of fingerprints is known to possibly bring negative effects on the credibility of examiners. The result of this study may be applicable to other areas using digital imaging enhancement technology.
