Financial Statement Analysis of SMEs in a Non-Face-to-Face Work Environment (비대면 업무환경에서 중소제조기업의 기업경영분석)

  • Due to the COVID-19 phenomenon, more than one-third of SMEs in Korea have been working from home. Therefore, we tried to find out the management status of SMEs and find policy support. The survey data was based on the Bank of Korea's corporate management analysis 2021 data. As a result of the study, the debt of SMEs increased from 362 trillion won(2019) to 409 trillion won(2022), while their capital decreased from 489 trillion won(2019) to 336 trillion won(2022). Net profit and loss increased to 14.9 trillion won(2019) and 23.3 trillion won(2021). As a result of the company's financial soundness analysis, First, for stability, the current ratio was high compared to the total industry and the dependence on borrowings was high. Second, profitability improved from 3.20%(2019) to 4.28%(2021), but it was lower than 5.01%(2021) for all industries. Third, the growth rate showed an increase of 12.43%, which is 1.57 times faster than the total asset growth rate of 7.94%(2021) for all industries. As for the growth rate of sales, all industries(2021) showed (-)growth, while SMEs among manufacturing industries showed a growth rate of 14.78%. Fourth, as for activity, the total asset turnover ratio was higher at 0.96% compared to 0.73 for all industries. In conclusion, stability and profitability were low and growth potential was high compared to all industries. In the future, policies that focus on industries with high growth potential are needed.

  • As technological capabilities have enhanced, the patterns of innovation activities of latecomer firms changed to post catch-up mode. The purpose of this research is to analyze the post catch-up innovation patterns of technology-intensive small and medium firms of Korea. The innovation patterns can be divided into three types: the technology deepening innovation type, the new technology based innovation type and the architectural innovation type. The characteristics of the technology deepening innovation type are cumulative technological learning and the integration of new generic technology and existing technologies. The characteristics of new technology based type are the acquisition and revelations of new basic knowledges from former incubating organizations such as large firms and universities. The characteristics of the architectural innovation type are the learning of system architecture knowledge from former organization and interactive learning with user firms. These post catch up innovations also have some general characteristics. They effectively exploited the windows of opportunities which are opened in the middle of technological paradigm change.

  • Investigation into the sources of firms' ideas for new product development is very important because the capabilities of developing new products determine the competitiveness of a firm. This study aims at drawing the managerial implications for new product development in terms of the autonomy and the size of firms. To do this, this study analyzes how the capabilities of developing new products and the sources of ideas are different by the types of firms. More concretely, it compares differences in the capabilities of developing new products between types of firms, and in the sources of ideas for new product development between internal sources and external sources.

  • The main purpose of this study is to examines peculiar competitive advantages of Korean women businessmen(Han-Sang) in Australia. The results of case analysis are summarized as follows. First competitive advantage is CEO's excellent dynamic capabilities like wonderful adaptability, woman's unique delicate management style, mom's unique emotional leadership and showing leadership by example. Second competitive advantage is Korean peculiar sincerity and diligence, can-do spirit, perseverance and fast implementation. Lastly, The social status as Korean immigrants made them weak position in Australian society but it was found that they have made weakness a strength. They built up the solidarity with Korean immigrant society and took advantage of it for their business. Based on the results, implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed.

In particular, many small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Korea are making efforts to meet the needs of various markets through smart factories.   • Considering that the subject of innovation of SMEs is the CEO, it is very important to study the innovation behavior of the CEO at the individual level. The purpose of this study is to examine factors affecting innovation work behavior of SME CEOs. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-compassion and self-transcendence on innovation work behavior, which are the emotional intelligence factors that show the psychological growth and potential of individual, and the career ambition and positive psychological capital did. In order to verify the research hypothesis, we analyzed 238 questionnaires collected from CEOs and executives of SMEs focused on auto parts and manufacturing. Factors affecting innovation behavior of SME CEO are summarized as follows. First, career ambition has a positive effect on positive psychological capital. Second, positive psychological capital has a positive effect on innovation work behavior. Third, self-compassion of CEO has positive influence on self - transcendence. Fourth, the self-transcendence of CEO has a positive effect on innovation work behavior. This study confirms the relationship between CEO career ambition, positive psychological capital, self-compassion, self-transcendence, and innovation work behavior of SME CEO and confirms the influence relationship between positive psychological capital and self-transcendence It is meaningful. Finally, theoretical and practical implications were discussed based on the results of the study.

Business Performance Indicators and Determinants Analysis of Small and Medium Sized Shipping Logistics Companies in Korea - Using 2015 Economic Census Data (국내 중소 해운물류기업의 경영성과지표 산정 및 결정요인 분석 - 2015년 경제총조사 자료를 이용하여)

  • This paper analyzes comparatively business performance indicators and determinants of small and medium sized shipping logistics companies in Korea, using 2015 economic census data. For this purpose, this study estimates various business performance indicators according to 2015 small and medium sized companies classification standards, including operating income to sales and gross value-added to sales. In addition, this study analyzes determinants of business performance using generalized least squares models. The results indicate that average sales, operating income and value-added, sales and operating income per worker, operating income to sales, and material cost to sales of large sized companies are higher than those of small and medium sized companies. The business performance indicators differ by industry and size. Moreover, the determinants of business performance are analyzed in terms of the unemployment rate (-), number of employees (-), sales (+), labor cost ratio (+), and labor cost per employee (-) and the impacts of the individual explanatory variables based on elasticity are different. Finally, this quantitative information could be used to improve the business performance of domestic shipping logistics companies.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction of a investment policy to increase a competitive power for small firms. For this purpose, several hypothesis are established and tested (1) Whether the small firm's management resources and performance are different among industries\ulcorner (2) What resurces affect on the business performance\ulcorner (3) Whether the firm's management resources which affect the performance are different among industries\ulcorner (4) Whether the firm's resources level are different between high performance group and low performance group in same industry\ulcorner For the empirical study, the data is obtained from 1,338 small firms in Korea manufacturing industries. The results of this study are (1) the level of firm's management resources and performance are different among industries and (2) the management resources which affect the performance are different according the industry. And (3) the management resources level are different according to the firm's performance level in some industry.

Analysis of Employment Effect of SMEs According to the Results of Technology Appraisal for Investment (투자용 기술평가 결과에 따른 중소기업의 고용효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm whether the current technology appraisal model for investment, which is designed to identify high-growth SMEs in sales, which is one of the characteristics of gazelle companies, has the possibility of expanding employment effects. For SMEs classified as technology investment adequate firms(TI1-TI6) through technology appraisal for investment between 2016 and 2018 were targeted. At this time, the employment effect was analyzed by dividing the absolute employment effect and the relative employment effect. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the technology appraisal items for investment defined as innovation characteristics did not have significant explanatory power for the absolute employment effect. However, for the relative employment effect, among innovation characteristics, technicality(TC) was found to have significant explanatory power, and this is because the item appraised based on future growth potential. In particular, the relative employment effect is meaningful in terms of the actual employment effect, and the conclusion is drawn that the current technology appraisal model for investment is an appraisal model with the possibility of expansion in terms of employment effect.

  • This study examines empirically whether appropriateness of training program, learning organization, and demographic factors enhance the effectiveness of training program for HRD in small and medium companies. The major findings are as follows: The appropriateness of training program, learning organization, and demographic factors of employee has a strong positive effect on the effectiveness of training program for human resource development and intent to participate in the training program in small and medium enterprise. The learning organization has a strong positive effect on the effectiveness of training program for human resource development and intent to participate in the training program in small and medium enterprise. Also effectiveness of training program for human resource development and intent to participate in the training program in small and medium enterprise is different according to demographic factors such as job type(blue collar job, office job, sales job), rank of job position, and the length of service in organization. The significant results of this study is that appropriate design of training program to make employees understand the purpose of education and trying to activate the learning organization can increase the effectiveness of traing program in small and medium enterprise.
