For Automatic Meter Reading System, good topology of check machines, concentrators, and repeaters in client field is important. Steiner Minimum Tree is a minimum cost tree connecting all given nodes with introducing Steiner points. In this paper, an efficient mechanism allocating and connecting check machines, concentrators and repeaters which are essential elements in automatic meter reading system is proposed, which conducts repeated applications of building approximate Minimum Steiner Trees. In the mechanism, input nodes and Steiner points might correspond to check machine, concentrators or repeaters and edges might do to the connections between them. Therefore, through suitable conversions and processes of them, an efficient network for automatic meter reading system with both wired and wireless communication techniques could be constructed. In our experiment, for 1000 input nodes and 200 max connections per node, the proposed mechanism shortened the length of produced network by 19.1% comparing with the length of Minimum Spanning Tree built by Prim's algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a joint bandwidth allocation and path selection scheme for IEEE 802.16j networks in uplink with cooperative relaying, and we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by using OPNET based simulation in hilly terrain with heavy tree density. The proposed scheme maximizes the system throughput in uplink with cooperative relaying in IEEE 802.16j networks. Then, we transform the proposed scheme into multi-dimensional multiple choice knapsack problem (MMKP) based scheme. We also propose uplink throughput maximization scheme and MMKP based scheme without cooperative relaying. We show that the system throughput of the proposed MMKP based scheme is higher than that of link quality based scheme, and cooperative relaying provides higher system throughput than the conventional case without cooperative relaying in uplink.
Hybrid-ARQ and opportunistic relaying are the widely used schemes for obtaining diversity gain in wireless communications. In opportunistic relaying, channel state information(CSI) between relays and destination is required to select the best relay. But if the destination moves very fast, the CSI becomes outdated. In this paper, performance of hybrid-ARQ based opportunistic relaying with outdated CSI is analyzed in outage probability and throughput perspective. The analysis is verified by computer simulations.

Relay-assisted multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique has become a promising candidate for next generation broadband wireless communications. In this paper, we propose maximum ratio combining (MRC) minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) equalization for single carrier-frequency domain equalizer (SC-FDE) in amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks. The performance of SC-FDE system can be improved considerably by achieving both the diversity gain and the MMSE equalization gain when the signals from source-destination (S->D) and source-relay-destination (S->R->D) are combined and equalized by means of the MMSE criteria. We find the weighting coefficients of MRC combining and the tap coefficients of MMSE equalizer for SC-FDE in AF relaying networks. Simulation results show that the proposed relay-based system considerably outperforms the conventional SC-FDE system.

Cooperative networks enhance the performance of communication systems by combining received signals from the several relay nodes where the source node transmits signals to relay nodes. In this paper, we analyze the effect of resource allocation in cooperative networks. We assume that the cooperative networks use the conventional modulation scheme between the source and relay nodes, and adopt space-time code between the relays and destination node. Both the synchronous and differential modulations are applied for the conventional scheme and differential modulation is used for the space-time code. We consider relay location and energy allocation for resource allocation, and the performance of cooperative networks depending on the number of relay is also investigated.

The purpose of this study is to suggest installation methods of a mobile-communication repeater into a lift system with consideration of EMC. Two approaches, one(Solution 1) is realized with a repeater installed in a lift hoistway and another(Solution 2) installed inside a lift, were proposed. It is confirmed that the Solution 1 is more effective than the Solution 2. And it is suggested that the EIRP of a repeater must be limited to be ${\leq}$-5 dBm by considering electromagnetic immunity level for a lift and safety margin of 20 dB. This limit can provide suitable electromagnetic environment inside a lift with precise power-control mechanism of mobile communication systems. This study could be a good example of Green ICT by improving electromagnetic environment in spite of radio use.

In order to extend cell coverage and to cope with shadow areas, a relay-assisted wireless communications system has been widely studied. In this paper, we propose new equalization method for single carrier (SC) frequency domain equalizer (FDE) in amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying multi-path networks to improve the performance at shadow areas. The performance of SC-FDE system in 3-slot based multi-path networks can be improved considerably with the diversity gain which we obtain by equalizing the combined signal from relays by means of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria. We find the weighting coefficients of maximum ratio combining (MRC) and the tap coefficients of MMSE equalizer for SC-FDE in AF relaying multi-path networks. Simulation results show that the proposed system considerably outperforms the conventional SC-FDE system.

In this paper, the effects of performance improvement far the OFDM based satellite communications are analyzed with applying the CI(Carrier Interferometry)-OFDM and channel coding scheme considering the group delay and gain ripple characteristic as well as the nonlinear characteristic of the transponder. Comparing the BER between traditional OFDM and CI-OFDM, the degree of performance improvement is presented in AWGN channel environments for specified backoff condition of HPA. The simulations are performed with the 36 MHz bandwidth of transponder channel, 120 Mbps transmission rate, and 16 QAM modulation scheme between ideal and worst case condition. It is shown that the improvement measure by the CI-OFDM and channel coding for the group delay and nonlinear characteristic outperforms that for the gain ripple in terms of performance degradation presented by the individual characteristics. And the simulation results show that the effects of improvement by the CI-OFDM outperforms the effect by the applied channel coding, particularly in worst case condition.

In this paper, the performance of equalization-based on-channel repeater for terrestrial DMB is analyzed. A primary concern in on-channel repeater is the performance degradation due to the echo and one of key component for on-channel repeater is the echo canceller, which usually employs LMS algorithm utilizing the repeater output as a reference for echo channel estimation and compensation. One problem using LMS algorithm is the tracking capability and there necessarily exists residual echo that has not been cancelled. To effectivelyremove the residual echo, we consider an equalization based on-channel repeater where the echo-cancellor is followed by an equalizer that performs channel estimation using pilot symbol and the channel inversion utilizing homomorphic decomposition. According to the simulation result, the performance degradation caused by the residual echo can be considerably alleviated by using the equalizer following the echo-canceller.

Due to the epochal development of the unmanned technology, the importance of LDT(: Location Detection Technology), which accurately estimates the location of a user or object, is dramatically increased. TOA(: Time of Arrival), which calculates a location by measuring the arrival time of signals, and TDOA(: Time Difference of Arrival) which calculates it by measuring the difference between two arrival times, are representative LDT methods. Based on the signals received from three or more base stations, TOA calculates an intersection point by drawing circles and TDOA calculates it by drawing hyperbolas. In order to improve the radio shadow area problem, a huge number of repeaters have been installed in the urban area, but the signals received through these repeaters may cause the serious error for estimating a location. In this paper, we propose an efficient location estimation technique using the signal received through the repeater. The proposed approach estimates the location of MS(: Mobile Station) employing TOA and TDOA methods, based on signals received from one repeater and two BS(: Base Station)s.
