  • Chosun dynasty mathematician Park Yul (1621 - ?) wrote San Hak Won Bon(算學原本) which was posthumously published in 1700 by his son Park Du Se (朴斗世). It is the first mathematics book whose publishing date is known, although we have Muk Sa Jib San Bub (默思集算法) by Gyung Sun Jing (慶善徵, 1616-?). San Hak Won Bon is the first Chosun book which deals with tian yuan shu (天元術) and was quoted by many Chosun authors. We do find it in the library in Korea University. In this paper, we investigate its contents together with its historical significance and influences to the development of Chosun dynasty Mathematics and conclude that Park Yul is one of the most prominent Chosun dynasty mathematicians.

  • HPM(History and Pedagogy of Mathematics) become an important issue to us now. Study on old Korean mathematics books were made recently. We study mathematics books in Kyujanggak in this article. Horng Wann-Sheng 洪萬生, an math. historian and a member of editorial board of Historia Mathematica, visited Kyujanggak, the royal library of Joseon Dynasty. After his visit, he published a paper, "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak 奎章閣收藏算書初訪"(2008 Kyujanggak 32, p. 283-293). In his paper, he also raised several research problems on the history of Korean mathematics. In this paper, we analyze his paper "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak" and give some answers to those raised problems on Korean mathematics. Also we correct some misunderstanding of Horng on some facts. Especially, we make it clear that the author of SinJungSanSul(New Arithmetics 新訂算術) was not Lee Sang-Seol(李相卨), whom Horng considered as the author, but Lee Gyo-Seung(李敎承) through the correct translation of its preface and an article about its copyright lawsuit. And we added some pathways how Chinese mathematics books were imported by Joseon. We introduce the case of Hong Dae-Yong(洪大容) in detail.

  • In this paper, we study the 17th Century Chosun's mathematics book ${\ll}$Muk Sa Jib San Beob${\gg}$ written by Chosun's mathematician Kyeong Seon Jing. Our study of thebook shows the ${\ll}$Muk Sa Jip San Beop${\gg}$ as an important 17th Century mathematics book and also as a historical data showing the mathematical environment of 17th Century Chosun.

  • Zhu Shi Jie's Suan Xue Qi Meng is one of the most important books which gave a great influence to the development of Chosun Mathematics. Investigating San Hak Gye Mong Ju Hae(算學啓蒙註解) published in the middle of the 19th century, we study the development of Chosun Mathematics in the century. The author studied western mathematics together with theory of equations in Gu Il Jib (九一集) written by Hong Jung Ha(洪正夏) and then wrote the commentary, which built up a foundation on the development of Algebra of Chosun in the century.

  • Since western mathematics and astronomy had been introduced in Chosun dynasty in the 17th century, most of Chosun mathematicians studied Shu li jing yun(數理精蘊) for the western mathematics. In the last two decades of the 19th century, Chosun scholars have studied them which were introduced by Japanese text books and western missionaries. The former dealt mostly with elementary arithmetic and the latter established schools and taught mathematics. Lee Sang Seol(1870~1917) is well known in Korea as a Confucian scholar, government official, educator and foremost Korean independence movement activist in the 20th century. He was very eager to acquire western civilizations and studied them with the minister H. B. Hulbert(1863~1949). He wrote a mathematics book Su Ri(數理, 1898-1899) which has two parts. The first one deals with the linear part(線部) and geometry in Shu li jing yun and the second part with algebra. Using Su Ri, we investigate the process of transmission of western mathematics into Chosun in the century and show that Lee Sang Seol built a firm foundation for the study of algebra in Chosun.

  • It is well known that SuanXue QiMeng has given the greatest contribution to the development of Chosun mathematics and that the topics and their presentation including TianYuanShu in the book have been one of the most important backbones in the developement. The purpose of this paper is to reveal that Zhu ShiJie emphasized decidedly mathematical structures in his SuanXue QiMeng, which in turn had a great influence to Chosun mathematicians' structural approaches to mathematics. Investigating structural approaches in Chinese mathematics books before SuanXue QiMeng, we conclude that Zhu's attitude to mathematical structures is much more developed than his precedent ones and that his mathematical structures are very close to the present ones.

  • Zhu Shi Jie's Suan Xue Qi Meng (算學啓蒙) is one of the most important books which had a great influence to the development of Chosun Mathematics and Gyung SunJing's Muk Sa Jib San Bub is the oldest Chosun mathematics book. In this paper, comparing Suan Xue Qi Meng (算學啓蒙) with Muk Sa Jib San Bub, we study the mathematics educational constructions and structures in books and then conclude that their structure can be used in present school mathematics.

  • It is well known that the development of mathematics in eastern Asia was based on Chinese mathematics. Investigating Chinese mathematics books that were brought into Chosun, we study how Chinese mathematics influenced Chosun mathematics. Chinese mathematics books were brought into Chosun in three stages, namely basic mathematics books in the era of King SeJong(1397-1450), Chinese mathematics books influenced by western mathematics in the 17th century and finally those with commentaries on mathematics of Song-Yuan era in the 19th century. We also study the process of their importations.
