  • This paper deals with the position control fur a feed drive system in CNC milling machine, which utilizes a modified error signal for the elimination of steady-state error. A linear time-invariant (LTI) system has consistent properties in response to standard test signal inputs. Those also appear in an error curve acquired from the response. From such properties, constructed is an error model for the position control of the feed drive. And then added is the output of the error model to the current error signal. Consequently the resulting proportional control system brings performance improvement in view of the steady-state error. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is confirmed through simulations and experiments.

  • A conventional PID controller has poor performance when it applied to systems with unknown deadzones. To solve this problem, this paper proposes PID controller using two layered-fuzzy logic. The structure of controller is reconstructed with fuzzy compensator and fuzzy tuner on the conventional PID controller. Our proposed control scheme shows superior transient and steady-state performance compared to conventional PID controller. The scheme is robust to variations in deadzone nonlinearities as well as the steady-state gain of the plant. The performance of the developed controller is verified through simulation.

  • The Control Element Assembly(CEA) shroud is one of the most important components in the reactor vessel internals for the nuclear power plant. Because of the severe modification from its original design the structural integrity of this component has been questioned. In an attempt to resolve this question, the response of the CEA shroud to a random loading in the actual operating condition is calculated analytically and experimentally and compared to the code allowables to show that it is structurally adequate and acceptable for the long term operation.

  • This paper deals with mathematical modeling of a 75-ton open-cycle Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (LPRE) and the steady state simulation based on a nominal operating point. Each component of open-cycle LPRE may be classified into seven major categories using thermodynamics and dynamics characteristics. To simplify the simulation model of LPRE in this paper, we used four govern equations with assuming no heat transfer process. We confirmed the mathematical model of LPRE by using the error ratio and comparing the experiment data and simulation data in steady state, and checked the stability with the linearized model. Finally, we demonstrated the simulation model as compared to the transient response of experimental data.

  • This paper describes wavenumber filtering for damage detection using single-frequency standing wave excitation and laser scanning sensing. An embedded piezoelectric sensor generates ultrasonic standing waves, and the responses are measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer and mirror tilting device. After scanning, newly developed damage detection techniques based on wavenumber filtering are applied to the full standing wave field. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed techniques, several experiments were performed on composite plates with delamination and aluminum plates with corrosion damage. The results demonstrated that the developed techniques could be applied to various structures to localize the damage, with the potential to improve the damage detection capability at a high interrogation speed.

  • The equation of motion for the piping system conveying harmonically pulsating fluid is presented. When pulsating fluid flows, the properties of this system like mass, stiffness and damp is changing according to fluid fluctuation. To solve the steady-state time response of this system, numerical integration method of differential equation was usually used. But this method has some problem such time consuming method and difficulty of converging. Therefore this research suggests reliable and efficient numerical method to solve steady-state time response of piping system by using displacement assumption method.

  • Acoustic responses to pressure oscillations in axisymmetric combustion chamber are numerically investigated to examine the qualitative trend of acoustic instability in liquid rocket engine. Chamber operating condition and excitation frequency of oscillating pressure are selected as exciting parameters of acoustic instability. Artificial perturbation is simulated by total-pressure oscillation with sine wave at chamber inlet. Many approximations and simplifications are introduced without losing the essence of acoustic pressure response. First, steady-state solution for each operating condition is obtained and next, transient analysis is conducted. Depending on operating condition and excitation frequency, the distinct response characteristics are brought. Weak-strength flames and high-frequency excitation tend to cause sensitive acoustic pressure response leading to unstable pressure field. These results are analyzed based on the correlation with acoustic pressure responses from the previous works adopting laminar flamelet model.

  • The floors of building structures equipped with vibrating machines can be susceptible to large vibration as a result of resonance or beating. Such a vibration can be reduced efficiently by using tuned mass dampers. However, the effectiveness of the damper depends greatly on the location and the natural frequency of the damper. To determine the optimum damper location is especially important since the dynamic behavior of a building structure varies with the location of the input loading. To this end, it is intended to decide the location and natural frequency of tuned mass dampers for reducing vibration of both loaded floors and floors located nearby the loaded floors considering the location and frequency components of the loading. The Vector composition method and the super elements are used th obtain the responses in steady states, and the optimum damper location and natural frequencies were found with the given damper mass.
