The ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of elastic horizontally curved beams are derived, in which the effect of shear deformation as well as the effects of vertical deflection, rotatory and torsional inertias are included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically fer parabolic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and ADINA are made to validate the theories and numerical methods developed herein. (omitted)
The dynamic response of symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminated plates under impact loads is investigated using a higher order shear deformation theory. A modified Hertz law is used to predict the impact loads and a four node finite element is used to model the plate. By using a higer order shear deformation theory, the out-of-plane shear stresses, which can be a crucial factor in the failure of composite plates, are determined with significant accuracy. This is accomplished by using a stress recovery technique using the in-plane stresses. The results compared with previous investigations showed good agreement. It can be seen that this method of analyzing impact problems is more efficient than current three dimensional methods in terms of time and expense.

Gap servo NFR (Near Field Recording) system is one of technologies to reduce beam spot size by increasing NA (Numerical Aperture) of lens. To achieve high NA, SIL (Solid Immersion Lens) is used. In case of using a blue LD (405 nm) as the light source the gap distance should be controlled under 100 nm with much tighter margin. To develop NFR disc drive with very small gap distance between SIL bottom and the surface of media, we need to research for the vibration characteristics and design considerations. This paper deals with a study on vibration characteristic of NFR disc drive.

A theoretical method is presented to investigate the thermoelastic and dynamic response of functionally graded material (FGM) rectangular plates made up of metal and ceramic. The temperature is assumed to be constant in the plane of the plate and to vary in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependant, and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains is adopted to formulate the theoretical model. The modal analysis technique is used to develop the analytic solutions of the dynamic problem. The effect of material compositions and temperature fields is examined. The present theoretical results are verified by comparing with those from finite element analysis by ANSYS.

The dynamic characteristics of delaminated smart composite laminates are studied using animproved layerwise laminate theory. The theory is capable of capturing interlaminar shear stresses that are critical to delamination. The presence of discrete delamination is modeled through the use of Heaviside unit step functions. Stress free boundary conditions are enforced at all free surfaces. Continuity in displacement field and transverse shear stresses are enforced at each ply level. In modeling piezoelectric composite plates, a coupled piezoelectric-mechanical formulation is used in the development of the constitutive equations. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of nonlinearity in the transient vibration of bimodular behavior caused by the contact impact of delaminated interfaces. Composite plates with delamination, subject to external loads and voltage history from surface bonded sensors, are investigated and the results are compared with corresponding experimental results and plates without delamination.

The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of stepped non-circuiar arches are derived as nondimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The lowest four natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated for the stepped parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, section ratios, and discontinuous sector ratios are considered. The effect of rotatory inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies is reported. Typical mode shapes of vibrating arches are also presented.

In general, the vertical vibration problems for strength of members and serviceability of building structures are not considered in structural design process, but the prediction of the vertical vibration is very important and essential to structural design process. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of vertical vibration in terms of the transfer of horizontal directions to near-rooms on the shear wall building structures. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration, the modal test and the impact (heel-drop and hammer) excitation experiments were conducted several times on two building structure. The results from the experiments are analyzed and compared with the results. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer in horizontal way are effected from the fundamental frequency of the slabs, and are effected the shear wall on the Path of the vibration transfer.

The free vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells on inclined partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The area of elastic foundation is not uniform and varies along the axial direction of the shell. The motion of shell is represented by first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The governing equation is obtained using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and a variation approach. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the present FEA results. The numerical results reveal that the elastic foundation has significant effect on vibration characteristics.

The coupled fluid-structure interaction problem is analyzed using the theoretical method to investigate the coupled vibration characteristics of functionally graded material(FGM) cylindrical shells conveying an incompressible, inviscid fluid. Material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The steady flow of fluid is described by the classical potential flow theory. The motion of shell represented by the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The effect of internal fluid can be taken into consideration by imposing a relation between the fluid pressure and the radial displacement of the structure at the interface. Numerical examples are presented and compared with exiting results.
