  • This study was to explore the life history of an elderly woman who had six times of imprisonment and entered a Samchung re-education camp. This study of life history followed the analysis of Mandelbaum(1973) pointing three perspectives of life: dimensions, turnings, and adaptations. Participant's dimensions of life were exploitation of labor, hostess life for U.S. military, prison life, Samchung re-education camp, marriage with the disabled, life of a farm worker. Turnings of life were serving as a maid, confinement of prison, life of hostess for living, being remanded to Samchung re-education camp by state violence, marriage and divorce, denial of social welfare service. Adaptations of life were downright adaptation in early life, exaggerated act in juvenile reformatory, prostituted women as a simple fortune-maker, adaption as a good wife and wise mother after marriage, resistive adaption as a self-employed. and farm worker. Based upon this results outcome, discussions and implications were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the adjustment process of families adopting an older child, and to generate a substantial theory. To achieve this purpose, we conducted in-depth interviews with mothers adopting an older child and analyzed data with qualitative analysis approach. From the analysis, theoretical model has been made, and the model includes the adoptive families' diverse experiences, barriers to adjustment as well as resources and strategies that they mobilized and used for smooth adjustment. Their experiences in the process of adjustment consisted of five phases: unfamiliar meeting, shock, fighting alone without support, control, and stability. Barriers to adjustment process were composed of adoptees' problem behaviors, loss of time, lack of preparation, lack of experiences, repetition of the vicious circle, withstanding alone, improper resources, lack of support, and being criticized. Resources and strategies that families adopting an older child utilized were individual resources and ability such as rearing experiences, intellectual ability, willingness, belief, and perspective change; family system such as spouse and other offsprings; informal support system such as extended families, relatives, friends, neighbors, and other families adopting an older child; formal resources such as adoption workers and helping professionals. From our results, we suggested policy and practice guidelines to help adjustment experiences for families adopting an older child.

  • Relying on the concept of "multicultural space", this paper aims to examine the ways in which the adaptation of foreign professional migrants to the Korean society has been geographically differentiated. Due to the limits of spatial perspectives, existing studies on the adaptation of foreign migrants to the Korean society tend to ignore the geographical variations in the ways in, and the degrees at, which foreign migrants have been adapted into the Korean society. There are, however, significant regional variations in the living conditions, physical and cultural environments, and economic opportunities that are given to the foreign migrants in Korea, so that the adaptation of foreign migrants to the Korean society is regionally differentiated. In order to prove this, this paper explores whether and how the ways in which foreign professional migrants have adapted to the Korean society have been regionally differentiated on the basis of questionnaire surveys and statistical analyses.

  • This study examines the vocational adjustment experiences of elderly men who chose a creative occupation after retirement. The aims are to understand the related meanings and to provide specific empirical data on the elderly who hope to start a creative occupation. Five men aged 65 years or older who chose a creative occupation after retirement were enrolled in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the participants. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed, and a total of 7 categories, 25 subcategories, and 132 concepts were identified. The seven categories were "challenge led by a sense of freedom," "reflection of the need for 'fun,'" "difficulties and limitations felt by a non-expert," "concerns and effort to afford the increasing expenses," "joy for accomplishment," "ways to utilize my creativity," and "reward from increased social participation." The participants felt that adjusting to a creative occupation was a process by which their potential creativity was expressed. They felt the joy of working that they had not felt before, and the series of processes by which they overcame difficulties during work and increased their social participation were in line with the goals of creative aging. In order to help older adults in Korea to choose and adjust to creative occupations in their older adulthood, there is a need for creative-occupation-related education prior to retirement and for various policies and practical efforts that consider the change of social environment. Furthermore, our findings suggest that choosing a creative occupation after retirement is an effective measure for promoting successful aging among the elderly in Korea.

  • The present study aims to phenomenologically investigate the adaptation experiences of Vietnamese immigrant women, with in the sociocultural context of their native country. In-depth interviews with a total of seven Vietnamese immigrant women were analyzed by the phenomenological method of A. Giorgi(1997). A total of 127 meaning units and 7 themes with 17 sub-themes, which rendered central meanings that indicated situational structures, were derived. The statements of situational structures were re-categorized in accordance with the sociocultural context of their native country. As the socioeconomic aspect, "aspiration for new opportunities and a new world" and "disappointment and frustration" were derived. The aspect of familial value and culture involved "conflicts over the unilateral acceptance of differences" and "building social relationships". The aspect of female status was associated with "conflicts due to patriarchal hierarchy". The aspect of child caring involved "education as a symbolic value" and the "double-sidedness of mother identity strategy". The gist of Vietnamese immigrant women's adaptation experiences is "to grow into a subjective mother despite conflicts due to the disappointment and frustration behind aspirations".
