  • This study found the possibility of using cemeteries within the locality as field trip destination. A comparison between Korea and the United States of America's active progress has derived the difference and the implications. Therefore, this article found that the cemetery has sufficient resources based on experience-learning place within the community. Therefore, when the active educational program was developed; it gained more abundant resources for education, as well as provided more different educational opportunities for the students than now. As the result of comparison, the reason why the educational program is actively progressing in the American cemeteries is that a beautiful and fresh environment has been built up such as a park or garden in a cemetery and has been preserved as a healthy forest ecosystem. Furthermore, it is because they actively used the cemetery within a community as the subject. If our cemetery can be renovated and the funeral culture can be changed to break down the image of an avoidable unpleasant facility, it would play a role as a field for learning experience.

  • In Korea, most of the locations of the cemeteries and burial vault are in forest lands. The utilization of forest land for this particular purpose is very inefficent and considered to be a serious problem. National government (Forest Service), local governments (Incheon city), and religious corporation (eunhoe Temple) are creating new burial methods to solve the inefficiency in forest utilization. In this study, awareness of Koreans and Japaneses on tree burial problems were compared. Based from the results of the survey, more than 80% of the respondents are aware of the problems. However, the burial culture in Korea still has many problems. Operation and management of tree burial is not being done by experts and sufficient information regarding to this type of burial still needs to developed. To solve these problems, eco-friendly burial, which is considered as new funeral culture, is now being created. In the case of Ichinoseki City in Iwate prefecture in Japan, improving the residential environment greatly affected the tree burial practices. This town was chosen for this study due to its characteristics of being a tourism area which greatly affecting the economy of this town. Another study site of this study was located in Sangju city. The changing social environement and the perception of the people regarding on the services being provided to the people were examined thru questionnaire survey. Specifically, this study analyzed the practices and beliefs of the people regarding the tree burial culture.

  • The uniqueness of Korean funeral culture has produced the problems such as forest indiscreet cemetery development and increase of cemeteries for those without surveying family due to negligent management. To solve these problems, government and social organization have recommended a use of cremation, charnel house and cemetery. The objective of this study is to develop a cemetery information management system which cemetery managers who are GIS laypersons are able to understand GIS functions easily and use conveniently. Cemetery tasks should be done not only in the office but also at the field. In the office, they perform GIS functions like input, modification and so forth using a desktop. And at the field, they perform the functions like simple input, inquiry using a PDA(Touchscreen) that can receive GPS signal. As various open source softwares were used to build the system, the expense was reduced largely, and we could expect the possibility that it can be utilized in more cemeteries by adding more various functions.

  • The 5th century kiln that produced pottery coffins was found for the first time in Korea, located in the Oryang-dong remains in the city of Naju. This kiln, located in the central area of the Yeongsan River, provides important data for research on mortuary practices in prehistoric society, including the structure of production and patterns of distribution and consumption. For this study, the remains of five ancient tombs and pottery coffins excavated from the 4th century Mandong archaeological site were chosen to determine the area of consumption of pottery coffins produced at the Oryang-dong kiln. The samples from each area of remains were analyzed for minor elements using neutron activation analysis method, and from these results, the identities of the corresponding production areas were investigated using the multi-variant statistical analysis of discriminant analysis. The evidence strongly suggests that pottery coffins produced at the Oryang-dong kiln in Naju were used in ancient tombs of the Bannam mound in Naju, the Okyari mound in Yeongam, and the Banam mound in Hampyeong, reaching those sites through trade and distribution. The findings also suggest that pottery coffins from the Mandong archeological site in Gochang and the Inpyeong mound in Muan were not produced at the Oryang-dong kiln in Naju, but rather were brought from pottery kilns in different production areas, through trade and distribution.

  • Korean traditional practice that gets a gravesite for burial and reckless grave establishment not only obstructs systematic national land management and reasonable urban development, but also causes a serious factor which has a harmful effect on natural environment and residential space in reality that our country is limited in area and national and social bases for use and establishment of graves are still inadequite. Though government and local governments have tried to cope with these problems by enacting legislation on funeral and others and so forth, they still have a variety of problems due to the shortage of grave management systems and information of accumulated individual graves. This study describes about the development of a GIS-based grave management system for making administrative management for individual cemeteries the prime object. As a result of application to a pilot area, the system developed in this study was able to be applied for supporting the time-limited burial system and managing cemeteries for those who left no relatives behind by constructing the database with grave-related position/attribute information which are collected by administrative system or direct survey. In addition, it is expected that this system will be utilized as a systematic management method that can be handed down the present or the future descendants under the tradition of the family-oriented funeral culture.
