Considerations on the Origins of Shojo Manga Style: The Works of Nakahara Junichi (일본 소녀만화의 시각적 표현의 원류에 관한 고찰 : 나카하라 준이치의 작품을 중심으로)

  • As manga is a genre characterized by combined use of letters and pictures, visual expression, that is style, is one of the most important representative elements, even beyond the structuring of the story. Shojo Manga (lit. Young girl's Manga) in particular is distinguished by visual style clearly differentiated from other manga genres. Shojo Manga uses a variety of unique techniques that cannot be found in other manga genres. The use of starry eyes in the depiction of the characters, taller than life characters, and the creative use of frames which disregard the traditional square shape are some examples. Therefore, the question arises of by whom and when such visual characteristics in Shojo Manga were created. This paper will analyze the figure of Nakahara Junichi (1913-1983), illustrator of Shojo magazines active between the 1930's and 1950's, and who as it has been stated in previous research, influenced the splendorous illustrations of Shojo Manga. Therefore, I will look for the commonalities and differences between Shojo Manga and Nakahara's oeuvre, shedding light on the origins of Shojo Manga and attempting to theorize the relationship existing between them.

Analysis on PVR Service as a Supplementary Function of Interactive Service: Based on Satellite Broadcasting Subscribers (양방향기능의 보완으로서 PVR(Personal Video Recorder)서비스 분석: 위성방송사례를 중심으로)

  • With the help of information technology, PVR has been evaluated as an innovative device that brings epochal changes for program selection and convenience of receivers with the convergence between broadcasting and telecommunication. Satellite broadcasters introduced PVR service to strengthen its interactive function. This study analyzed PVR user behavior and how it changed the existing TV viewing behavior through satellite subscribers. The results revealed that PVR subscribers mainly used it for time shifting like VCR use. FUrthermore, heavy PVR users watched TV more than on average and enjoyed a divers genre of programs. This study provides scholarly implication for PVR using behavior and its effects and its useful information for contents and marketing strategy to help PVR service popularization.

  • Illness has long been an important plot device in Korean dramas. In earlier years, the device typically was supposed to be in the form of a terminal bodily disease occurring for the female main character toward the end of the story. On the other hand, the latest trend is to situate a mental illness for the male lead character at the earlier part, and use it as a tool to build characters, construct causal relations and set the intense tone for the overall story. The mental illness as a plot device helps to provide a series of reversals, revelations and turnarounds, giving viewers a stronger sense of intensity, empathy and identification. While the illness used to play the role of a deus ex machina to make a big emotional finish, the latest adoption of the mental illness as a main plot device has enhanced the flexibility of the plot and the effect of versimilitude in dramas. These noticeable changes make one suspect that the focus of Korea's drama contents might have already begun to grow out of the conventional soap operas into different genres.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of diverse contents service of EBS providing on the multi-platform in the era of smart media. This study investigated contents service of EBS in order to seek and suggest EBS's competitiveness in the era of smart media environment. As a result, EBS is providing real-time service, VOD and e-learning, but its current contents service is concentrated on providing e-learning service. This study recommended that EBS need to reinforce contents suitable for various multi-platform uses. It also suggested EBS need to cooperate with diverse webs service and SNS service in order to widen openness of its platform, and to provide not only diverse contents, but also applications by offering mobile and on-demand contents and services. Finally, this study proposed that EBS is needed to move towards a more public and comprehensive media portal.

The Determinants of the Use of Calligraphy in the Movie Poster (영화 포스터에서의 캘리그래피 사용에 관한 연구: 영화 스토리의 배경과 장르의 영향에 대해)

  • This study focused on the determinants of the use of Caligraphy in the movie posters, which may have impacts on movie promotion. Caligraphy has been of interest as a tool to carry emotional factors of movies to potential movie-goers. Movies have characteristics of experience goods of which consumers may not know the value of the products before they actually experience the products. This study collected data of the top 200 movies during 2003 and 2013 from Korian Film Council database and analyzed the relations between the characteristics of movies and the use of Caligraphy design in the posters. As a result, we found that history-based movies and drama-genre movies have adopted Caligraphy. We confirmed that the Caligraphy design have functioned effectively in Korean movie posters.

From Multivalent Mediality to Cross-Sector Synergy: The Archetypal Function of Dramatized Blockbuster Ballad Music Videos in Hallyu Entertainment (한류 컨텐츠의 원형으로서의 서사적 블록버스터 발라드 뮤직 비디오 고찰)

  • The rise of Hallyu (Korean Wave) has generated a treasury of historiographic and cultural inquiries into the phenomenal success of South Korea's media entertainment industry. Whereas the majority of such studies focus on TV dramas and popular music, there is a medium, or rather a hybrid sub-genre within the medium category of short films, that must be reexamined and thus appreciated as the archetypal predecessor of popular Hallyu contents: music videos. The rapidly changing social, political, and economic climate in the mid- to late 1990s called for content that would grasp the attention of a younger, increasingly mobile population with diversified interests and routines that no longer guaranteed fixed-time viewership. Meanwhile, the advent of cable TV channels and high-speed internet service ensured greater temporal and infrastructural accessibility. The media entertainment industry's response to the new opportunities and challenges arising from these sudden growths in the scale, range, connectivity, and mobility of consumer demographics was synergetic cross-sector collaboration in the form of dramatized blockbuster music videos, which combined two popular and lucrative genres: trendy dramas and ballad music. In this essay, by relocating Hallyu's archetypal medium/genre, I claim that increasing upward and sideways mobility across sectors not only inspired new production but also reconfigured the very concept, form, and impact of media-driven cultural imaginary in South Korea.

Analysis on Annual Film Distribution Portfolio of Lotte Entertainment (영화 투자배급사의 연간 포트폴리오 분석: 롯데엔터테인먼트를 중심으로)

  • We examined the annual film distribution portfolio of a Korean film distributor, Lotte Entertainment, investigating how the company puts big-budget films and low-budget movies together. As a result, the distributor was found to invest more than 80% of its whole budget in producing medium-size movies. The more successful box office, however, was witnessed from big-budget films that the company spent more than 6 billion Korean wons. With respect to genre, comedy and drama were the most and second-most frequently produced. However, Those two genres were not the most successful genres in the box office. Korean movie-goers favored actions and thriller the most and second most. Comedy took only the third place of the Korean box office, signifying a discord between the portfolio and the Korean box office.

An Analysis of Science Writing by High School Students through the Argumentation Structure Instruction: Focus on Writing tasks Based on Genres of Science Writing (논증 구조 교육을 통한 고등학교 학생들의 과학 글쓰기 분석: 과학 글쓰기 장르에 따른 글쓰기 과제를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the changes in structure and contents of different functional genre of science writing during high school using the argumentation structure. For this thesis, seven students of a girls' high school in the national capital region took the argumentation structure instruction for 40 hours for a month. As a result, considerable changes had occurred amid the Explanation genre, the Experiment-recount genre and the Exposition genre. In the Explanation genre and the Experiment-recount genre, noticeable progress had been made in the usage of the argumentation elements and scientific concepts and knowledge evolved in a more rarified and detailed manner. In the Exposition genre, argumentation structure had changed from the simple argumentation structure to the subordination or the multiplex argumentation structure. Simultaneously, it was affirmed that the types and number of the argumentation elements increased significantly along with enlargement of respective scientific concepts and knowledge. Hence, this implies students can determine their understanding of scientific facts and contents during the progress of developing the argumentation structure. It is necessary that students take the well-organized argumentation structure instruction.

Animation and Horror - Ghost story, Madness, and Cannibalism (애니메이션과 공포 -괴담(怪談), 광기(狂氣), 식인(食人))

  • The 'fear' in animation has a couple of problems to apply the criteria for identical genre as in movie or literature. First, the mutilation and destruction of one's body and the appearance of monsters and ghosts are not a normal way of expression and could not apply to one genre. Second, the cause of fear comes from the subject of fear which is a reality that is something 'unrealistic' and 'special' and is approachable. This is all possible in a three dimensional world, but animation is not founded on realism. According to this logic, the horror genre in animation or the esthetic experience of animation is not possible. However, many of the powerful images you can see from the horror genre are all created from animation. Therefore, many writers are drawn to the horror in animation and tried to express in many different ways. This study will include the general idea of fear which drives the audience to the felling of fear and terror but we will mainly focus on the three types of fear - ghost story, cannibalism, and madness - and discover the meaning of fear used in animation. Through this process, we anticipate that fear in animation is not just for pure amusement, but will be able to investigate the meaning of fear philosophically even if the hidden side of reality is terrifying.
