Deconvolution of UV Spectrum for Selective Measurement of $ClO_2$ Concentration Quantitatively in Solution Containing Various Chlorine Species (다양한 염소 종이 함유된 수용액에서 자외선 흡수 파장 분해법을 이용한 이산화염소 선별 정량 분석)

  • An ultraviolet (UV) absorption method has a difficulty to analyze $ClO_{2(aq)}$ in solutions containing various chlorine species because UV spectrum of $ClO_{2(aq)}$ overlaps with other chlorine-containing species. This study has proposed the deconvolution method of UV spectrum to analyze $ClO_{2(aq)}$ concentration quantitatively in solution containing various chlorine species. We compared results obtained from UV deconvolution method with titration method. Good agreement of $ClO_{2(aq)}$ concentration between them has been shown in about 10%. This result informs us that the deconvolution method of UV spectrum could be a feasible for the analysis of $ClO_{2(aq)}$ in solution containing various chlorine species.

Removal of microorganic pollutants based on reaction model of UV/chlorine process (자외선/염소 반응해석 모델에 의한 미량유기물질 제거에 관한 연구)

  • The UV/chlorine process is a UV-based advanced oxidation process for removing various organic pollutants in water. The process is becoming increasingly popular because of its effectiveness in practice. It is important to the safe and efficient operation of a UV/chlorine process that the optimal operating conditions for both target removal objective and saving energy are determined. Treatment efficiency of target compounds in UV/chlorine process was mainly affected by pH and scavenging factor. In this study, kinetic based mathematical model considering water characteristics and electrical energy dose calculations model was developed to predict of treatment efficiency and optimal operating conditions. The model equation was validated for the UV/chlorine process at the laboratory scale and in pilot tests at water treatment plants.

  • 먹는물에서 염소소독 부산물로서 휘발성유기화합물인 디클로로아세트니트닐(DCAN), 트리클로로아세트니트릴(TCAN), 디브로모아세트니트릴(DBAN), 브로모클로로아세트니트릴(BCAN)의 4종류의 물질을 대상으로 탈기법(air stripping) 및 탈기법(air stripping)과 자외선에너지($8\;W{\times}6$)를 이용하여 분해시험을 행하였다. 물질들의 확인은 가스크로마토 그래프, 이온크로마토그래프 그리고 자외선분광광도계를 사용하였다. TCAN은 탈기법 이용한 방법에서 제거가 되었으며, DBAN과 BCAN에서는 자외선에너지에 의해 분해가 되었다.

Evaluation of inactivation kinetics on pathogenic microorganisms by free chlorine/UV hybrid disinfection system (전해 염소수/자외선 결합 시스템을 이용한 병원성 미생물의 불활성화 키네틱스 평가)

  • Chlorination and UV illumination are being widely applied to inactivate a number of pathogenic microbials in the environment. Here, we evaluated the inactivation efficiency of individual and combined treatments of chlorination and UV under various aqueous conditions. UV dosage was required higher in waste water than in phosphate buffer to achieve the similar disinfecting efficiency. Free chlorine generated by electrolysis of waste water was abundant enough to inactivate microbials. Based on these, hybrid system composed of sequential treatment of electrolysis-mediated chlorination and UV treatment was developed under waste water conditions. Compared to individual treatments, hybrid system inactivated bacteria (i.e., E. coli and S. typhimurium) and viruses (i.e., MS-2 bacteriophage, rotavirus, and norovirus) more efficiently. The hybrid system also mitigated the photo re-pair of UV-driven DNA damages of target bacteria. The combined results suggested the hybrid system would achieve high inactivation efficiency and safety on various pathogenic microbials in wastewater.

A Study on Inactivation of E.coli Through 368.6[nm] UV Irradiation Lamp (368.6[nm]를 최대방사 파장으로 포함한 자외선램프에 의한 대장균(E.coli)의 불활성화에 관한 연구)

  • Disinfection using UV irradiation has been considered to an alternative for chlorination because it does not suffer from disinfection byproducts problem. The aim of this study was to verify if UV irradiation with 368.6[nm] wavelength has a potential to be used a efficient disinfection. UV irradiation was given for 60 minutes to E. coli. which was used as a model microorganism. Remarkable decrease in number of microorganism was not observed for initial 30 minutes, however, 83.3[%] of disinfection efficiency was achieved after 30 minutes of irradiation. Inactivation constant, k was determined to 0.00868[$cm^2$]/([$mW{\cdot}s$]) using kinetic approach.

  • Photolysis behavoirs of pesticides(Chlorothalonil and Endosulfan) over UV irradiation UV irradiation with pH 3.0 and irradiation with 3.5% salt were studied. The analyses of pesticides were carried out using gas chromatograph with an electron-capture detector, total organic carbon, and Ion chromatograph, respectively. The reactions were conducted in a alumium annular reactor equipped with a low pressure mercury multilamp ($8W{\times}6$) and initial concentration was 10 ppm. Chlorothalonil was almost photodegraded by UV irradiation, UV irradiation with pH 3.0 and 3.5% salt within 30 min of reaction time. Endosulfan-${\alpha}$,${\beta}$(100%) were photodegraded to 38% of Endosulfan-${\alpha}$ and 25% of Endisulfan-${\beta}$ by UV irradiation. Endosulfan-${\alpha}$(83%) was photodegraded to 66% by UV irradiation, 70% by UV irradiation and pH 3.0 and 75% by UV irradiation and 3.5% salt. Endosulfan-${\beta}$(16%) was photodegraded to 80% by UV irradiation, 98% by UV irradiation and pH 3.0 and 90% by UV irradiation and 3.5% salt.

  • 기존 에어콘의 냉매로 사용되던 프레온이 지구 환경 파괴의 주범으로 알려지고 있는데, 프레온이 포함하고 있는 염소가 대기의 성층권에서 자외선을 촉매로 하여 오존과 반응함으로써 결국 오존층을 파괴한다는 과학적인 연구 결과가 계속 발표되면서 1987년 3월에 채택된 몬트리올 의정서(Montreal Protocol)에 의해서 처음으로 그 생산 및 사용이 강제적으로 규제되었고 계속적인 가입국 회의에서 그 규제가 강화되고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 선진국에서는 대체 냉매의 개발과 더불어 대체 냉매를 사용한 공조 시스템 요소의 최적화가 새로운 쟁점으로 떠오르고 있다.

Laboratory Evaluation of Polysulfide Epoxy Overlay Material for Bridge Deck (교면포장용 폴리설파이드 에폭시재료의 실내물성 평가)

  • This research was performed to evaluate physical properties of polysulfide epoxy overlay material for bridge deck as part of a review for possibility of domestic application of polymer concrete for bridge deck pavement. In order to evaluate strength characteristics, compressive strength, flexural strength and bond strength were tested, and, for durability characteristics, chloride ion penetration resistance and freeze/thaw resistance were tested along with ultraviolet rays impact evaluation. The tests showed that the results met the criteria suggested by the American Concrete Institute in terms of compressive strength, flexural strength and bond strength. However, in terms of the strengths measured at various test temperatures, it was found that the epoxy material was highly dependent on temperature, and, therefore, this should be considered at the time of domestic application of the epoxy material later. Deflection characteristics was checked through flexural strength test and it was found that bridge deck pavement using the epoxy material was excellent compared to bridge deck pavement using asphalt. Furthermore, the results of chloride ion penetration resistance test and freeze/thaw resistance test were also excellent. In the evaluation of ultraviolet rays impact on epoxy slurry mixture, reduction of strain was noticed with increased strength, but the deflection characteristics after exposure to ultraviolet rays was better than the existing acryl polymer concrete. Therefore, it is concluded from the research that the polysulfide epoxy overlay material has the physical properties that are appropriate to pavement of bridge deck.

Effect of Food Additives on Heat Sensitivity of Listeria monocytogenes H-12 and Decontamination of Kitchen Utensils (식품 첨가물이 Listeria monocytogenes H-12의 내열성에 미치는 영향 및 오염된 조리기구 제균)

  • Effect of food additives on the heat sensitivity of listeria monocytogenes H-12 inoculated into Pollack surimi was investigated and also confirmed the effectiveness of various decontamination method such as tap water washing, chlorination, ultraviolet irradiation and heat treatment haying been applied on cooking utensils. Food additives such as polyphosphate, chitosan, and potassium sorbate increased heat sensitivity of t monocytogenes H-12 and polyphosphate showed the strongest synergistic effect. The tested strain was not detected from stainless steel and plastic cutting board contaminated with $10^4{\~}10^5/cm^2$ of L monocytogenes H-12 after tap water washing for 10 seconds or 1 minute, but washing effect was not found in wooden cutting board. The chlorination of stainless steel and plastic cutting board for 10 seconds with $5{\~}50 ppm$ solution eliminated all cells of the contaminated strain, however any change of the viable cell count was not observed in the chlorination of wooden cutting board, W irradiation on stainless steel and plastic cutting board for 5 minutes with 15 W above 30 cm eliminated the contaminated strain, but the tested strain was still found after 60 seconds of irradiation on wooden cutting board. The treatment of hot water on all used cutting boards for 10 seconds at $70^{\circ}C$ resulted in complete loss of viability of the contaminated strain.
