The data were analyzed according to descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations. The Chinese male college students had an optimistic bias toward AIDS. The score of AIDS knowledge was 73%, and the self-esteem and sense of control scores were all rated higher than the median. The difference among groups according to grade and age were statistically significant in this study. The self-esteem, sense of control, and optimistic bias toward AIDS showed significant positive correlations, but AIDS knowledge, optimistic bias, and condom use have no correlations. The studies that examine psychological variables with condom use among various groups should be followed in the Chinese context.

  • The purposes of this study are to design and apply an experienced-based reading program using picture books for the struggling readers to improve their reading ability; and to analyze and verify how this program influences their self-esteem. The final objects of this study are 53 struggling readers who are 1-4th graders in 8 elementary schools. For this, the specific goals are set up as follows: First, an experience-based reading program using ADDIE teaching design model and Kolb's experience learning cycle are planned and developed to improve reading abilities and self-esteem of the struggling readers. Second, it also aimed to clarify how the experience-based reading program using picture books influence the struggling readers' self-esteem in affective ones. As a result, this experience-based reading program using picture books is effective on improving the struggling readers' self-esteem, generally. Although the degree of improvement is different from each of the subordinate factors, the overall scores of self-esteem are raised. This study suggests that an experience-based reading program using picture books is appropriate for improving the affective characteristics of the struggling readers. And it is also needed to produce a research manual to get the same test condition that prescribes the methods of pre-test and post-test.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changing trajectory of self-esteem and to explore contemporaneous and lagged effects of social supports(family, friends, and teacher) of 4th graders in elementary school to 9th graders in middle school. The subjects were 1,296 multiethnic students, who participated in the Multicultural Children and Adolescents Panel Study(MCAPS) from 2011 to 2016. The results of piecewise growth function showed that students' self-esteem was increased during upper grade in elementary school but soon deceased during middle school. Individual differences were found at initial, 1st and 2nd changing status. Students with higher level at initial status in self-esteem showed less increased pattern during elementary school but greater decreased pattern during middle school. In addition, supports from family and teacher showed contemporaneous effects across all 6 years while supports from friends showed such effects only for 5 years except 9th grade. Lagged effects of family were found in elementary school and significant lagged effects with supports from friends were found at 6th and 8th grade. The results of this study imply that the social support of family, friends, and teacher has an important role to encourage the self-esteem of multicultural adolescents.

  • This study aims to measure intelligence (cognitive characteristics), self-esteem, mathematical attitudes, and scientific attitudes (affective characteristics) of gifted students from low-income families, and to identify the relationship among these variables. 147 students in the lower grades of elementary schools who were enrolled to university-based gifted education centers were participants of the study. The results showed that the percentile scores of each variable were 85% for intelligence, 75.6% for self-esteem, 73.3% for mathematical attitudes, and 71.3% for mathematical attitudes. There was no statistically significant relationship between intelligence and the affective characteristics (i.e., self-esteem, mathematical attitudes, and scientific attitudes), while statistically significant relationships were shown between self-esteem and mathematical attitudes (r=.448, p=.000), between self-esteem and scientific attitudes (r=.522, p=.000), and between mathematical attitudes and scientific attitudes (r=.448, p=.000). The results suggest that although the gifted students from low-income families show lower levels compared to other gifted student groups, their potential level of giftedness is considerably high, which calls for appropriate educational support systems designed for this population.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between depression, stress, self-esteem, oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-14) in middle-aged women. Data were as collected by self-reported questionnaires from 205 middle-age women. The instruments were the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D), Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI), Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 21.0. Pearson correlation coefficient analysis found that oral health impact profile (OHIP) was significantly associated with depression (r=-0.560, p<0.001), stress (r=-0.595, p<0.001), self-esteem (r=0.522, p<0.001). The OHIP was explained 39.4% by stress (${\beta}$=-0.362, p<0.001), self-esteem (${\beta}$=0.203, p=0.009) using multiple regression analysis. These results indicate that the intervention program of oral health promotion for community-middle- aged women is needed from now on.

  • We investigated whether divergent thinking attitudes mediate the relationship between self-esteem and creative teaching beliefs among teachers. We examined differences in the mediating model we proposed in the groups of pre-service and in-service child care teachers. We found differences in the pre-service and in-service child care teachers in the proposed mediating model. Especially in the pre-service child care teachers, the mediating effect of divergent thinking attitudes was confirmed. There was a significant effect from self esteem to creative teaching beliefs and also a significant effect from divergent thinking attitudes to creative teaching beliefs. But in-service child care teachers, there was neither direct nor indirect effect of self-esteem to creative teaching beliefs. Suggestions for more studies and for better in-service education for the pre-service and in-service child care teachers are recommended for the future.
