Sleep Duration and Suicidal Impulse of Korean Adolescents: Weekday/Weekend Sleep Duration Effects and Gender Difference (청소년의 수면시간과 자살충동 - 평일/주말 수면시간 효과에 대한 성별 분석)

  • This study examines the impact of sleep duration on Korean adolescents' suicidal impulse. A gender-based analysis was conducted using binary logistic regression method. The major findings are as follows. First, weekday sleep duration had a significant effect only on male adolescents. Male adolescents who sleep less than seven hours on a weekday are likely to experience suicidal impulse by 1.9 times higher than the others. This effect remained significant even when other relevant variables were controlled. On the other hand, female adolescents who have less than seven hours of sleep on a weekday have about 1.3 times higher chances to experience suicidal impulse. However, this effect became insignificant when other variables such as stress were controlled. Meanwhile, weekend sleep duration did not have any significant effect on both male and female adolescents. By demonstrating the different effects between weekday/weekend sleep duration and male/female adolescents, this study supports the claim that it is necessary to take a social approach in studying sleep duration.

Influence of Constructive Factors of Predictive Variables Related to Suicidal Ideation (자살충동과 관련된 예측변인들의 구성요인의 영향력)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of constructive factors of predictive variables related to suicidal ideation, in contrast to previous studies analyzing the influence of predictive variables related to suicidal ideation. The 11,755 subjects were participated in the 12th(2017) KoWePS. After the diagnosis of multicollinearity among constructive factors of predictive variables related to suicidal ideation, and are analyzed with the statistical program Spss 23.0 as a calling logistic regression. The major findings were as follows: The more patriarchal gender role increase, the more language violence occur, the more feel loneliness, the more people treat me cold, the more drinking' black-out occur, the odds ratio of suicidal ideation increases, while the more ladder score of life increase, the odds ratio of suicidal ideation decreases. Based on this result, we suggests social welfare implications to reduce or prevent suicidal ideation, and the limitations of this study and the suggestions for future studies were also presented.

A Causal Analysis of Suicidal Impulse in the Context of Parents, Friends, Teachers and Community Support: Gender Difference (부모, 친구, 교사, 지역사회 지지와 청소년의 자살충동간 인과관계 분석 : 성별 차이를 중심으로)

  • Given the 4 contexts-parents, friends, teachers and community- of adolescents, this research verified the casual relationships between each contextual support and the suicidal impulse, and the gender difference. The 4-year longitudinal data(KYPS) collected from 3,697 adolescents were used in this study. Using the Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model, the suicidal impulse was consistently present from the 3rd grade in middle school to the 3rd grade in high school with significant stability. Gender differences were founded in the effect of parental support among the 3rd grade in middle school. Also the negative effect of friends' support on the suicidal impulse among the first grade high school students. The effects were more stronger for girls than boys. Previous supports by teachers and community had no significant effects on later suicidal impulses. These results suggest that the study of suicidal impulse needs to examine the complex support system of multiple context layers.

  • This study is to test moderating effects of family support, friend's support and teacher's support in the relationship between experienced violence in school and adolescent suicidal impulse. For the purpose of this study, 298 adolescents who were experienced violence in school were sampled and surveyed. The analytical results are the followings: Moderating effects of family support, friend support and teacher support are significant in the relationship between experienced violence and depression. They are also significant in the relationship between experienced violence and suicidal impulse. On the other hand, only family support is significant in the relationship between depression and suicidal impulse. This study suggests some policy implications based on this findings.

Suicidal Impulse caused by Stress in Korea : Focusing on mediational effects of Existent spirituality, Family Support, and Depression (한국인의 스트레스가 자살충동에 이르는 경로분석 : 실존적 영성, 가족의 지지, 우울의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study is aimed to investigate the effects of stress on suicidal impulse, considering the mediating effects of existent spirituality, family support, and depression. The data, collected from 1,000 adults were examined by the statistics software SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 17.0, in which descriptive statistics, structural equation model analysis, and multi-group simultaneous analysis are utilized. The study shows that, from the structural equation modeling, the stress has positive effects on depression and suicidal impulses, but negative effects on existent spirituality. Existent spirituality acts as a protective factor, negatively affecting the suicidal impulse. Depression has positive effects on suicidal impulse. Therefore, existent spirituality and depression have mediational effects on the relationship between stress and suicidal impulse. The results of multi-group simultaneous analysis imply that there are no age and sex differences. In conclusion, social workers need to make great efforts to exterminate stress, and treat depression at the first priority, because the depression is a major sign of suicide. As a protective factor, strengthening existent spirituality is a very effective way to prevent a suicidal impulse.

  • This study is to examine the causal relationship between adolescents' academic stress and suicidal thoughts via depression and gender differences of causal relationships in each causal paths. The purpose of this study is to suggest some implications based on this analytical results. For this purpose, we conducted interviews using a questionnaire targeting high school students. The analytical results shows that adolescent's academic stress has a significant effects on their depression and suicidal thoughts, and adolescent's depression also has a significant effects on suicidal thoughts. This study suggests some implications based on this results.

The Effects of Subjective Class Perception on Suicidal Ideation in Children of Single-Parent Families: Verification of Multiple Mediating Effects of Depression and Subjective Health Perceptions (한부모가정 자녀들이 인식하는 주관적 계층인식이 자살 충동에 미치는 영향: 우울과 주관적 건강인식의 매개효과)

  • This study aims to examine how subjective class perception of children from single-parent families affects suicidal thoughts and to verify the mediated effects of depression and subjective health perception. To this end, the analysis data used the 2020 Korean Children and Youth Human Rights Survey conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and 618 children from single-parent families who responded to the survey were selected and analyzed as study subjects. As a result of the analysis, first, it was found that the higher the subjective class perception, the lower the suicidal impulse. Second, depression was found to be completely mediated in the relationship between subjective class perception and suicide impulse. Third, subjective health awareness was found to be completely mediated in the relationship between subjective class perception and suicidal thoughts. Based on these research results, we proposed policy and practical measures to reduce suicidal impulses according to the subjective class perception of children of single-parent families.

The Moderating Effect of Protective Factors in the Relationship between Impulsivity and Suicide Behavior in Elementary School Students (초등학생의 충동성과 자살행동의 관계에서 보호요인의 조절효과: 고학년을 중심으로)

  • This study was to investigate the moderating effect of the protective factors in the relationship between impulsivity and suicide behavior of elementary school students. This study surveyed total 573 elementary school students located in Seoul. They completed survey questionnaires of impulsivity, suicide behavior and protective factors. Collected data was examined using correlation analyses and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. First, a total of 29(5.1%) students reported suicide plan, 17(3.0%) students reported suicide attempts and the rate of suicide behavior was 7.1%(n=41). Second, there was a negative relationship between impulsivity and protective factors and a positive relationship between impulsivity and suicide behavior. Also, it was found that the protective factors(individual factor, family factor, peer factor, school factor) moderated the relationship between impulsivity and suicide behavior of elementary school students. The implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • Suicide is a serious social problem in Korean and suicide-related research on adolescents and the elderly has increased. However suicide-related studies of young adults are limited despite the increased trend of youth suicide and its ripple effect. This study, examines factors associated with the suicidal ideation of young adults based on the results of the 2009 Internet Society Survey that demonstrate the impact of suicide.

A Study on the impact of the Adolescent Resilience on Suicidal Ideation, and the Suicide Prevention -Based on External Protective Factors (청소년 탄력성이 자살충동에 미치는 영향과 자살예방에 관한 연구-외적보호요인을 중심으로)

  • This study clearly identify the correlation between adolescents resiliency and suicidal ideation and more effective to strengthen the external protective factors for adolescents suicide prevention alternatives presented. Research subjects were 243 boy and girl first year students in a high school located in Kyunggi Province; Questionnaires were distributed for one week from March 5, 2013. Frequency analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, etc. were executed. All empirical tests were verified with 5% of significance level. From the result of analysis, suicidal ideation has a negative correlation with the adolescent resilience, and especially, when interaction in family dimension and the care, expectation level of school and peer dimension become higher, suicidal ideation was reduced. The implications of this study suggest that the material prepared for suicide prevention policy based on the results of a study on the impact of adolescents resiliency to suicidal ideation.
