  • This study investigated the size selectivity of the round traps for greenling (Hexagrammos otakii) in the western sea of Korea. The selection curve for the greenling from the experiments on Oct. 2000 and Ar. 2001 was fitted by Kitahara's method to a polynomial equation and two parameter logistic selection curve. The selectio curve of the latter was more reasonable than that of the former. The equation of selectivity curve obtained using a logistic function with least square method was , s(R)=1/1+exp(-1.1169R+6.4565), where R=1/m, and 1 and m are total length and mesh size, respectively. The size selectivity curve showed that the current regulated mesh size(35mm) in case of the round trap was close to the L50 (37.0mm) of the selection curve for the biological minimum length (21.4cm) of the greenling.

  • From November 1996 to April 1997, the rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier et Valenciennes) was reared in laboratory, and observed eggs development and morphology of larvae. The eggs of this species are demersal and adhesive, and their diameter were varied within 0.76 to 0.82 mm. The color of yolk is light yellow in early developmental stage, and then turned to orange before hatching out. The yolk contained numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 33 hours and 30 minutes after insemination at $10.0{\sim}14.5^{\circ}C$ of waters. The newly hatched larvae were elongated in shape and 1.62~1.68 mm in total length (TL) with 7~8+16=23~24 myomeres. The larvae absorbed yolk material and oil globule completely in 14 days after hatching and became postlarvae. The spawning season of adult rockfish may be supposed to be from February to March in the southern sea of Korea.

  • To determine the relative efficiency and mesh selectivity of gill net for the Pacific saury, Cololabis saira, a series of fishing experiments was carried out in the Northwest Pacific Ocean from August 13 to October 13 in 2002, using gill nets of different mesh size(30, 33, 35, 37, 39 and 42mm) constructed from two kinds of twine material(monofilament, twisted multifilament nylon web). The relative efficiency of two material gears was expressed as the ratio obtained by dividing monofilament catch by multifilament catch in number. The master selection curve of each material gear was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara's method. The catch of experimental gears is mostly Pacific saury(98.6%), Cololabis saira. The kinds of bycatch are common squid(0.7%), Pacific mackerel(0.6%), etc. Catch comparisons in the two gears showed that monofilament nylon nets are 1.7 times more efficient. The optimum values in monofilament and multifilament gill net for Pacific saury are 8.28 and 8.23, respectively.

  • Field tests were carried out with five different mesh sizes (86.6, 101.0, 121.2, 137.7, 151.5mm) to study the relative efficiency of monofilament and multifilament gill net for Marbled sole, Pleuronectes yokohamae, in the western sea of Korea, 2007-2009. The relative efficiency was analyzed by length distribution, catch in number, catch in weight and weight per individual for Marbled sole. Statistical T-test was done to verify the efficiency between two gears. In the field tests, the total body length range, catch in number and weight of Marbled sole was 15.8-48.2cm, 728 and 254,939g, respectively. During the field tests, Marbled sole less than 15cm length which is prohibition size of fishing was not caught, but the caught number of Marbled sole less than 19.5cm length which is first maturity length was 13 (1.8%) and the caught number of Marbled sole more than 19.5cm was 715 (98.2%). Catches of monofilament gill net was average 1.4 times more efficient than multifilament gill net. The weight per individual and total length by mesh sizes in the two gears tended to gradually increase according to mesh size increasing. But there was little difference of weight per individual and total length by mesh sizes between two gears.

  • For an effective management of fisheries resources, we need fisheries informations necessary for the establishment of reasonable fishing effort and TAC distribution. We carried out fishing research using trammel nets in the coastal sea of Susan-port(Yangyang, Gangwondo, Korea) and Hupo-port(Uljin, Gyeongbukdo, Korea) and analyzed fishing power variation of the fishing gear in terms of species composition, condition and so on for both sites. A total of 29 species were caught with most dominant species of Hippoglossoides dubius followed by Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini, Lophius litulon and Alcichthys elongatus in Susan. The total number of species caught in Hupo was 37 species with most dominant species of Todarodes pacifius followed by Lophius litulon, Hexagrammos agrammus and Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini. CPUE of Susan fishing area per trammel net was 12.74 fish and 2.00kg on average, while it was 6.80 fish and 2.27kg on average for Hupo. The fishing power index for both sites was 1, placing the two fishing grounds in a same level.

  • A series of fishing experiments was carried out in the eastern coastal waters of Korea from January, 2002 to March, 2003, using gill nets of different mesh sizes (m 180, 210, 240, 270 and 300 mm) to determine the size selectivity of gill net for female snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio. The catch of experimental gears was mostly snow crab (97%), Chionoecetes opilio. The maximum carapace length (RL) of each female snow crab caught in the fishing experiments was measured. The master selection curve was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara s method. The selection curve showed that the gill nets of larger mesh size allowed more female crabs of small carapace size to escape. The optimum values of RL/m for 1.0 of retention probability was 0.563 and RL/m was estimated to be 0.249, 0.290, 0.319, 0.344 and 0.367 when the retention probability were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, respectively.

  • To estimate the mesh selectivity of gillnet for ocellate spot skate (Okamejei kenojei), the field tests were carried out 12 times with six different mesh sizes (121.2mm, 137.7mm, 151.5mm, 168.3mm, 178.2mm, 189.4mm) in the coastal waters of Taean, Chungcheongnamdo of Korea, 2010~2011. In the field tests, the total number of species was 31, and that of catch was 1,410 and the total weight was 618,006g. The number and weight of ocellate spot skate which is main target in this study were 1,004 and 434,592g, respectively. The catch in number of ocellate spot skate occupied about 71.2% in total catch. The others of catch species were marbled sole (8.4%), sea raven (4.4%), japanese swimming crab (4.2%) and flatfish (4.1%) and so on. The range of body disk width (DW) of ocellate spot skates which were caught in this study was 15.2~35cm and the mode was 27~29cm. The estimation equation of mesh selectivity using the extended Kitahara's method was expressed as s $(R)=s(DW/m)={\exp}\{(-0.56R^3-1.80R^2+12.96R-9.99)-4.26\}$. The optimum value of DW/m for 1.0 of retention probability in this estimation equation was estimated 1.899 and DW/m was estimated to be 1.194, 1.314, 1.395, 1.461 and 1.520 when the retention probability were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, respectively. When applied to the retention probability of 0.5, the optimum mesh size was estimated to be 177.0mm on first maturity disk width 26.9cm of ocellate spot skate.

  • The mechanics of the walking shrimps is useful to clarify the fishing mechanisms in relation to the fishing gears. The gaiting behaviour concerning step positions and step timings on the flat board and the nettings, 16, 23 and 37mm in mesh size were experimented in the aquarium using video camera from June to October, 1984. It was found that the irregular movements of walking legs in step positions and step patterns were appeared on the nettings more than the flat surface due to the absence of mechanical contact with the substrates. The mean stride length and coefficient of variation of the periods in the walking shrimps on the flat board were significantly different from those values on the nettings, However, the velocity, the period and the ratio of forestroke to backstroke were unsteadily changed with the carapace length, and showed little difference under the four conditions. The mean phase difference on the flat board was greater than those values on the nettings which were decreased, while standard deviation on the flat board was smaller than those values on the nettings which were increased with increasing in mesh size.
