The participants of this study collected data from the in-depth interview on 8 mothers who put their disabled children to the group home. In the result of open coding, total 34 concepts, 28 subcategories and 13 categories were derived. The core category in the selective coding was 'establishing restorative relationship through entering a group home after encountering the limit of nurture.' Practical Strategies include the following; first, it's necessary to provide psychology counselling consequent on a mother's nurturing phase, and this study proposes a program for a father having a child with disability; in addition, there is the necessity of having to arrange the differentiated facility for physically/mentally impaired people, which meets the needs of the relevant people. At a level of policy, this study suggested the necessity of having to take into account the minimization of poverty problem facing a family having a disable child through the caring card, necessity of the use of good-natured card, and medical-social-welfare-based intervention, expansion of facility-touring class installation, and use of adult guardianship system, and differential payment of disabled child nurturing allowance consequent on income quantile, etc.

  • The purpose of this study was to use the Korea Health Panel to determine how the mother's characteristic and household characteristic variables were associated with dental clinic use of children in childhood and adolescence. The logistic regression analysis found that mother's education level was statistically significantly positively correlated with underage child's dental clinic use and children in single-parent family were less likely to use a dental clinic than those in two-parent family. As for dental clinic use by diseases, the higher level of mother's education, the more likely to use a dental clinic due to dental caries and children in single-parent family were less likely to use a dental clinic due to dental caries than those in two-parent family. No difference in dental clinic use due to tooth extraction was found by any of mother's characteristics or household characteristics, probably because age has an absolute impact during the period between milk teeth and permanent teeth. Lastly, mother's education level and household income were significantly positively correlated with dental clinic use due to orthodontics. On the basis of these results, it is necessary to develop a customized strategy reflecting children's growth stages and household characteristics in making a plan for promoting oral health of children and adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between mothers' childhood experiences, satisfaction as a parent, spousal support in parenting and their children's perception of their child-rearing practices. The subjects were 321 fifth and sixth graders from two elementary schools in Seoul and their mothers. A revised version of the Mother-Father Peer Scale (MFPS; Epstein, 1983) was used to assess the mothers' child experiences. To measure parental satisfaction, the Parent Satisfaction Scale (PSS; Duke, Rose, & Halverson, 1997) was revised and used. A modified version of the Teamwork of Parenting Alliance Inventory (PAI; Abidin, 1988) was used to assess spousal support in parenting. A modified version of the Child-rearing Behaviors Questionaire (Park, 1995) was used to assess the mothers' child-rearing practices. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and a t-test. The results of this study were as follows. 1) Mothers who received a greater degree of independence encouragement and acceptance from their fathers tended to show more warmth/acceptance in their child-rearing practices than those who received a lesser degree of independence encouragement and acceptance from their fathers. Mothers who received a greater degree of independence encouragement from their own mothers tended to show more warmth/acceptance of their children but less permissiveness/nonintervention and rejection/restriction in their child-rearing practices when compared to those who received a lesser degree of independence encouragement from their own mothers. The mothers who received a greater degree of acceptance from their own mothers tended to show more warmth/acceptance of their children but less rejection/restriction in their child-rearing practices when compared to those who received a lesser degree of acceptance from their own mothers. 2) Mothers who had a greater degree of satisfaction as a parent tended to show more warmth/acceptance but less rejection/restriction in their child-rearing practices than those who had a lesser degree of satisfaction in parenting. 3) Mothers who received a greater degree of spousal support in parenting showed more warmth/acceptance in their child-rearing practices than those who received a lesser degree of spousal support.

  • This study examined the relationship between family-friendly community characteristics and the life satisfaction of working mothers with elementary school children, and investigated whether the relationship was mediated by work-family conflict and facilitation of working mothers. For the analysis, the study used the response data of 627 working mothers from the 11th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC, 2019) and multi-mediation effect analyses were conducted using PROCESS. The main results are as follows. First, the higher neighbor support, the higher the work-family facilitation, which significantly increased life satisfaction. Second, the appropriateness of parenting environment and community service infrastructure satisfaction showed significant indirect effects with life satisfaction through increasing work-family facilitation and lowering work-family conflict. Moreover, the appropriateness of parenting environment was positively related with life satisfaction and it was a only variable that was directly associated with life satisfaction. On the other hand, the convenient access to community service infrastructure was found to lower work-family facilitation and lower life satisfaction, confirming the need for follow-up studies. This study shows that the family-friendly characteristics of the community are important for working mothers with elementary school-age children and provides empirical evidence to improve the family-friendly community characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study was to prove the effects of parents' family-of-origin experiences on their parenting efficacy among 260 parents with children aged between 3 and 7. The results were as follows. First, depending on parents' gender, with children aged between 3 and 7, both parents were found to positively perceive each factor in their family-of-origin experience and parenting efficacy. Second, fathers showed differences based on their income satisfaction and their mothers' employment status in their family of origin. Mothers showed differences in parenting efficacy according to their age, monthly average family income, and economic status in their family of origin. Third, both parents' experiences with their family of origin were correlated with their parenting efficacy. Fourth, family-of-origin health was found to be the most significant family-of-origin variable influencing parents' parenting efficacy. Wealth and experience of triangulation were found to be the influential factors common to both parents. Fathers' experiences of acceptance from their parents in their family of origin was a predictive factor of parenting efficacy. In contrast, in the case of mothers with more than two kids, when their family of origin was an extended family and when the mother in their family of origin had stayed at home, they showed higher parenting efficacy in their current parenting.
