As medical practices and procedures become more specialized and information technology develops in clinical settings, health organizations need medical personnel with special skills, knowledge and competency. But the lack of practical experience in clinical settings may impair competency in basic nursing skills among nursing students. This study used a cross-sectional survey to analyze factors related to nursing competency among nursing students in order to establish effective teaching methods to increase the clinical competency of nursing students. The data were collected from a questionnaire distributed in several universities among 106 nursing students who expressed a willingness to participate in the study during December 2011 in order to measure self-directedness, professional self-concepts, communication ability, learning satisfaction. The data were analyzed using the SPSS window program. There were differences regarding competency in basic nursing skills according to interpersonal relationships, grades, existence of an open lab. The level of learning satisfaction, communication skills and self-directedness were deemed influencing factors regarding competency in basic nursing skills. These 3 elements account for 49.9% of competency with regard to basic nursing skills. According to existing research, blended learning methods which consist of problem based learning, cyber education or case centered education should be considered as effective teaching methods for developing clinical nursing skills.
Purpose: This study was to test the effects of wholistic hospice nursing intervention program on pain and anxiety for in-patient of hospice palliative care unit. This study's design was one-group pre-post test quasi- experimental research. Methods: The subjects of study were 27 patients who were over 18 years old and admitted in hospice palliative care unit of S hospital in P city with agreement in hospice palliative care in their terminal disease. The experimental group subjects participated in holistic hospice nursing program took 120 minutes per session, a total of 1,200 minutes altogether for 10 sessions. The period of data collection was from April 6, 2004 to April 20, 2005. The collected data were analyzed by Paired t-test with SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. A Wholistic Hospice Nursing Intervention Program (named ‘Rainbow Program’) was used as a experimental tool in this study. This was developed by the authors. It was provided by interdisciplinary hospice team (nurses, medical doctors, social worker, pastors, art therapists, and volunteers). In addition, Korean Version of Brief Pain Inventory (BPI-K) by Young-Ho Yun(1998) was used to test degree of pain in physical aspect. And State-Anxiety Inventory was developed by Spielberger(1975) and translated by Kim, Jung-Tack & Shin, Dong-Gyun(1978) was used to test the degree of state-anxiety in emotional aspect. Results: (1) Hypothesis No. 1 "The experimental group which received Wholistic Hospice Nursing Program will have a lower degree of pain than before" was supported (t=-10.585, P= .000). (2) Hypothesis No. 2 "The experimental group which received Wholistic Hospice Nursing Program will have a lower degree of state-anxiety than before" was supported (t=-8.234, P= .000). Conclusion: Our results testified that this Wholistic Hospice Nursing Intervention Program was effective to decrease pain and state-anxiety of the in-patients of hospice palliative care unit. Therefore it can be used and applied actively in practice as a useful model of interdisciplinary team approach by hospice professionals in hospice palliative care unit.

This study was conducted to develop a supportive nursing intervention plan for the young-old by identifying the essence and meaning structure of re-employment experience after retirement. Participants of this study were selected by convenience sampling of seven Korean young-old individuals from 60 to 74 years of age who had re-employment experience after retirement in C city. Data were collected from June to August of 2016 based on an in-depth interview and tape-recording. The interview data were analyzed by the phenomenological analysis method developed by Giorgi. The analysis revealed the following constituents; confusion in response to the change of life, recognizing that it is not easy to work again, adaption to new changes, opening a new life. It is becoming increasingly important that nurses, who have played an important role in elderly nursing because of the increase in average life expectancy and overall elderly population, take care of extended tasks throughout the society, away from clinical work. Therefore, a social support system and nursing guidelines necessary for continuous nursing intervention should be provided so that the elderly, including those at early retirement age, can be satisfied with their life after retirement.
Chronic diseases are increasing nowadays as daily habits changed due to economic growth. Among chronic diseases, heart cerebrovascular disease is one of the major causes of death in South Korea that accounts for approximately 20% of mortality. Tests to measure anomaly of the heart is ECG tests, which measures and analyzes the electrical heart activity. Any mistakes in lead attachment location critically affects ECG testings, and statistical facts showed that only 2.8% of the nurses properly located leads to patients. As a solution, this paper proposes a system based on a projection-based augmented reality technology to generate X-ray images to the patient's chest to point out exact attachment locations of ECG leads. Evaluation comparison results showed a 2.6 cm difference between the conventional system and the proposed system. ECG test results also showed significant signal differences between the systems in leads V1, V2, and V3. The ECG measured accurately by the proposed system would help greatly in patient management and clinical decisions of clinicians.

This study was conducted to identify the effects of patient safety competency on patient safety management practice by nursing students and provide basic data for the development of the program to improve patient safety management practice. Participants were 293 fourth year nursing students who had clinical practice as student nurses for more than one year. Data were collected from April 26 to May 9, 2018. Collected data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson' s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 24.0 computer program. Nursing students' patient safety competency was an average $2.90{\pm}0.38$ points (patient safety knowledge $2.68{\pm}0.65$; patient safety skills $3.26{\pm}0.56$; patient safety attitudes $2.75{\pm}0.40$). The average core of management practices to patient safety recorded $4.13{\pm}0.57$ points. In terms of the correlation among subjects' patient safety knowledge, skills, attitudes and patient safety management practices, significant correlation existed between skills and management practices (r=.337, p<.001), attitudes and management practices (r=-.150, p =.010), knowledge and management practices (r=.171, p=.003). Regression analysis revealed that 15.7% of the variance in patient safety management practice by nursing students could be explained by patient safety skills (${\beta}=.307$, p<.001), patient safety accident experience of Fire (${\beta}=-.127$, p=.026), patient safety attitudes (${\beta}=-.121$, p=.026), and patient safety accident experience of patient education (${\beta}=-.119$, p=.034). Additional studies to determine the various factors affecting patient safety management practice of nursing students and to develop educational program for increasing patient safety management practice should be conducted.
Objectives : This study aimed to describe the use of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and to identify predictors for their use in the elderly living alone. Methods : This is a cross-sectional study that enrolled 1,099 subjects. Data regarding socio-demographic status, medical condition, cognition, mood disorder and use of OTC drugs were collected using self-administered questionnaire and from a specific semi-structured interview by a trained nurse. Data regarding use of OTC drugs were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Logistic regression analysis was applied to examine factors associated with the use of OTC drugs. Results : The use of OTC drugs were reported by 35.4% of the subjects. Analgesics (13.6%) was the most frequent drugs. Depression (OR=1.10, 95% CI=1.10-1.87) and comorbidities measured by cumulative illness rating scale (CIRS) (OR=1.08, 95% CI=1.03-1.12) were significantly associated with the use of OTC drugs in the elderly living alone. Conclusions : Depression and severity of underlying medical conditions could be a predictor of the use of OTC drugs in the elderly living alone. The clinicians should be vigilant regarding the potential use of nonprescription medications in the elderly.
Nursing students experience ethical conflicts that lead to moral distress and moral sensitivity in clinical practice. Most nursing students have some difficulty in speaking up when faced with morally challenging situations. Hence, increasing moral courage of these students is important to improve the quality of practice, and carry out nursing responsibilities. However, research on the moral distress, moral sensitivity, and moral courage of nursing students has not been reported in South Korea. The purposes of this study were to (a) identify the levels of moral distress, moral sensitivity, and moral courage of nursing students and (b) examine the influence of moral distress and moral sensitivity on moral courage. Data were collected through a survey using self-reported questionnaires sent to senior nursing students at two nursing colleges in Seoul and Gyeonggido. A total of 138 senior nursing students participated in the survey. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 23 program by Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. The mean scores of the moral distress thermometer, moral distress, moral sensitivity, and moral courage were $3.53{\pm}2.18$, $57.33{\pm}43.35$, $134.98{\pm}13.98$, and $56.33{\pm}12.75$, respectively. The significant factors influencing moral courage were the moral distress thermometer and patient-centered nursing, which was a subcomponent of moral sensitivity. The explanatory power of the model was 5%. This study confirms that nursing students, like nurses, experience moral distress. It is therefore important to create organizational environments that support the moral courage of nursing students.

This study aimed to develop smartphone application contents for the medication reconciliation of high-alert medications and to evaluate the satisfaction for this application. The xcode 4.5 and ios 6.1 SDK(software development kit) were used for constructing screen of the system. After implementation during 4 weeks, thirty five ICU(Intensive Care Unit) nurses were asked function related, contents related, and usage related satisfaction using 12 items. And differences of satisfaction according to the number of daily use and the frequency of use were evaluated. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, ANOVA with the SPSS 18.0. We developed the formula for drug dosage calculation, the alarming procedure, and the information of the high alert medication. In the satisfaction items, the mean score of 'This application is helpful to perform drug dosage calculation' was 3.14. However, 'I satisfy this application' was relatively low as 2.94. There were no differences in satisfaction according to the daily use and frequency of use. Based on the results of this study, more advanced smartphone application for medication reconciliation of high-alert medications will provide an important platform for patient safety.

This study examined the effects of laughter therapy in the elderly with degenerative arthritis who had joint pain, joint dysfunction, and depression. Through a single-blind, randomized assignment, an experimental group of 26 subjects and a control group of 26 subjects were recruited among the elderly with degenerative knee arthritis, who were over 65 years of age. From January 8 to March 11 of 2019, a total of 16 laughter therapies were administered two times a week, 60 minutes per session, in eight weeks. The pain threshold (p=.012) and joint function status (p<.001), which represents the pain, joint stiffness, and physical function, and depression (p<.001), in the experimental group improved after the eight weeks laughter therapy compared to the control group. Laughter therapy is a therapeutic intervention that can be delivered through physical or intellectual activities. This therapy is a non-invasive procedure and has the advantage that nurses can practice easily with a little training. It can be used as an intervention within community and clinical settings to relieve pain and improve depression in the elderly with arthritis.

This study was conducted to provide basic data about the depression of parents with school-aged children by identifying the actor and partner effects of family interaction and self-esteem on depression among parents with school-aged children. Data on 1,475 pairs from the Wave 7 Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed by using the SPSS 18.0 program and the AMOS 18.0 program. From the analysis of a hypothetical model, parents' family interaction exerted an actor effect on self-esteem. Mother's family interaction and self-esteem exerted an actor effect on depression; however, the partner effect on father's depression was not statistically significant. Father's family interaction and self-esteem exerted an actor effect on depression; however, the partner effect of father's family interaction on mother's depression was not statistically significant, and only father's self-esteem exerted a partner effect on mother's depression. The study results are as follows. First, the affecting factors of depression in school-aged parents, which are directly related to the depression of the child, were identified and the basic data of nursing intervention for the parents'. It is expected that clinical nurses will be used as data to convey professional knowledge to control parents' depression.
