  • Toughening mechanisms and mechanical properties of three different polyolefin-based composite systems we studied using the tensile, Izod impact and double-notch lout-point-bending (DN-4PB) test, which is well known be an effective tool for probing the failure mechanism (s) around the subcritically propagated crack tip. Microscopy observations such as optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were carried out lot the test samples. A detailed investigation clearly shows that a variety of toughening mechanisms, i.e., shear yielding, craze, particle-matrix debonding, rubber particle cavitation, crack deflection and bifurcation, are observed around crack tip damage zone. These toughening mechanisms are responsible for the observed, improved fracture toughness. Based on this study, DN-4PB technique is sufficient to obtain the information needed to describe the fracture behavior of polyolefin-based composites as well as their corresponding toughening mechanisms.

  • The failure behavior of structures is changed under different loading rates, which might arise from the rate dependency of materials. This phenomenon has been focused in the engineering fields. However, the failure mechanism is not fully understood yet, so that it is hard to be implemented in numerical simulations. In this study, the numerical experiments to a brittle material are simulated by the Molecular Dynamics (MD) for understanding the rate dependent failure behavior. The material specimen with a notch is modeled for the compact tension test simulation. Lennard-Jones potential is used to describe the properties of a brittle material. Several dynamic failure features under 6 different loading rates are achieved from the numerical experiments, where remarkable characteristics such as crack roughness, crack recession/arrest, and crack branching are observed during the crack propagation. These observations are interpreted by the energy inflow-consumption rates. This study will provides insight about the dynamic failure mechanism under different loading rates. In addition, the applicability of the MD to the macroscopic mechanics is estimated by simulating the previous experimental research.

  • This study was carried out with a view to increasing the tensile strength of sand soil and examined the characteristics of the tensile strength of sand soil reinforced by hair fiber which is environmentally friendly. The study investigated the change of the tensile strength and the stress-strain relationship varying the length of hair fiber, the amount of hair fiber, the amount of cement, and curing days. The test results indicated that the tensile strength increased significantly with hair fiber mixed. In addition, the sand soil mixed with hair fiber had larger displacement at failure. Based on the test results, it is appeared that the environmentally friendly hair fiber could be utilized practically to increase the tensile strength of sand soil in the future.

  • Sliding aspects of rock slope, where large-scaled tension cracks are induced during preliminary excavation, have been analyzed. Structure of rock mass is investigated by performing the electrical resistivity survey and the orientations and positions of discontinuities are measured from DOM-drilled core log. Geological evidence far primary failure movement has been detected and clay minerals which possess swelling properties are identified through XRD analysis. Slope stability is examined by considering the orientations of discontinuities and their trace distributions on the cut-face and neighboring natural slope surface. Both orientations and positions of failure-invoking discontinuity planes, traces of which are exposed within the anticipated sliding region, are concerned fur analyzing the preferred sliding directions. Regional sliding vectors are assessed based on the relative positions of potential sliding planes in the boreholes and the general trend of anticipated failure movement of rock slope is also investigated.

  • This study was performed to induce a quality improvement and standardization of materials used for greenhouse. For this purpose, physical and mechanical properties of agricultural films for greenhouse were measured by kinds and thickness of the films. The properties are composed of impact, tensile, tear propagation strength and light transmittance. The results were summarized as follows. 1. At the impact test result of the falling dart, the thicker the film, the greater the impact strength of soft film. The impact weight at 50 percents is from 158g to 213g and the strength of low density polyethylene(LDPE) film is higher than the rest of any other films. 2. Seeing the leveling of the impact rupture, maximum impact weight which was ruptured very little ranges from 62g to 192g. The impact strength of 0.1mm films was higher than that of 0.05mm as from 1.8 to 3.2 times. 3. Tensile weight covers from 0.95kg to 2.22kg in the test materials, and the weight of lengthwise film is larger than that of width. LDPE film has high value of tensile weight. Elongation range is from 345 to 102 percent and lengthwise elongation is greater than width as much as from 1.4 to 2.7 times. 4. Tea. propagation strength ranges from 80.5kg/cm to 121.7kg/cm, and unlike which of LDPE film has high value, EVA film has low value in the films tested. The width strength is higher than the lengthwise. 5. The light transmittance of the soft film is about 78-92 percent in the range of ultraviolet ray, but has high value in the visible ray range.

  • In case of nonlinear analysis for reinforced concrete structure, the characteristics of the failure, which are depend on loading conditions, such as tension splitting, compression crushing and shear distortion should be considered. On the analytical evaluation for the failure behavior of these, the finite element techniques is the most widely used. After the maximum load, however, an analytical results by finite element technique are depending on the size of the element. In this study, integral nonlocal model which is one of those study for overcoming the element sensitivity and dependancy, used for the failure analysis of box culvert specimen. Comparing on the experimental and analytical results, validity and reliability of integral nonlocal model are investigate.

  • In this paper elasto-plastic dynamic behavior of solid is analyzed by using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) without tensile instability which caused by a clustering of SPH particles. In solid body computations, the instability may corrupt physical behavior by numerical fragmentation which, in some cases of elastic or brittle solids, is so severe that the dynamics of the system is completely wrong. The instability removed by using an artificial stress which introduces negligible errors in long-wavelength modes. Applications to several test problems show that the artificial stress works effectively. These problems include the collision of rubber cylinders, fracture and crack of plate.

  • For investigating self-diagnosis applicability, a method based on monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of hybrid FRP(having electrical property) reinforced concrete has been tested. Then after examining change in the value of electrical resistance of carbon fiber in CFRP(non-hybrid type), CFGFRP and CFAFRP(hybrid type) before and after the occurrence of cracks and fracture in non-hybrid and hybrid FRP reinforced concrete at each flexural weight-stage, the correlations of each factors(the changes in electrical resistance and load as a function of strain, deflection) were analyzed. As the results, it is clarified that when the carbon fiber tows fracture, the electrical resistance of it increase largely, and afterwards hybrid FRP composites can be resist the load due to the presence of the reinforced fiber, for example, glass fiber or aramid fiber tows. Therefore, it can be recognized that hybrid FRP(including carbon fiber) reinforcing bar could be applied for self-diagnosis of fracture in reinforced FRP concrete fracture.

  • Long-term stability and delayed failure of granite were evaluated through the laboratory test based on Wilkins method and Brazilian disc test (BDT) which yields tensile strength, mode I fracture toughness and subcritical crack growth parameters. Then, the long-term strength of granite was estimated by using analytical models and long-term stability of compressed air-energy storage (CAES) pilot cavern pressurized up to 5 ~ 6 MPa was evaluated using numerical code, FRACOD with the determined subcritical crack growth parameters. The results of test and analyses showed that the subcritical crack growth index, n was determined as 29.39 and the inner pressure of 5 ~ 6 MPa had an insignificant effect on the long-term stability of pilot cavern. It was also found that the measurement and analysis of acoustic emission events can describe the accumulation of damage due to subcritical crack growth quantitatively. That is, AE monitoring can provide the current status of rock under loading if we make an identical installation condition in the field with that of the laboratory test.
