  • In order to analyze the consciousness of the general public toward wetland conservation issues, three hundred people, chosen to reflect a representative sample of the issues, including the general public and stakeholders of wetlands in Korea, were questioned for a one month period from September 5th, 2007. With regard to a question about the current level of wetland conservation in Korea, only 9.7 percent of the survey group answered that it has been adequately conserved. This suggests that there is a strong need to reform existing policies and management frameworks pertaining to wetland conservation. While the stakeholders recognized the public values derived from wetlands very well, 58.8 percent of the general public did not understand the values at all. This suggests that increased and systematic education and public relations programs for wetlands and their public values should be launched, especially for the general public. With regard to the effects brought about by levels of wetland conservation, 83.2 percent of the survey group answered that wetland conservation was very important for both the natural environment and development of Korea, while 63.5 percent of the group answered that it was very important for themselves and their family. Surprisingly, 85.1 percent of the survey group said a wetland should be conserved, even though there are no direct economic benefits from doing so. With all these survey results, the general public in Korea thinks that wetlands are an important and precious public asset which should be passed to the next generation.

  • In this paper, we propose an obstacle detection method that can operate robustly even in external environmental factors such as weather. In particular, we propose an obstacle detection system that can accurately inform dangerous situations in AR through DB-based feature matching and RANSAC-based multiplane method. Since the approach to detecting obstacles based on images obtained by RGB cameras relies on images, the feature detection according to lighting is inaccurate, and it becomes difficult to detect obstacles because they are affected by lighting, natural light, or weather. In addition, it causes a large error in detecting obstacles on a number of planes generated due to complex terrain. To alleviate this problem, this paper efficiently and accurately detects obstacles regardless of lighting through DB-based feature matching. In addition, a criterion for classifying feature points is newly calculated by normalizing multiple planes to a single plane through RANSAC. As a result, the proposed method can efficiently detect obstacles regardless of lighting, natural light, and weather, and it is expected that it can be used to secure user safety because it can reliably detect surfaces in high and low or other terrains. In the proposed method, most of the experimental results on mobile devices reliably recognized indoor/outdoor obstacles.

  • The purpose of this paper was to describe a statistical analysis for the spatial distribution of geographical distances of Erythronium japonicum at Mt. Geumjeong in Korea. The spatial pattern of E. japonicum was analyzed according to the nearest neighbor rule, population aggregation under different plot sizes by dispersion indices, and spatial autocorrelation. Most natural plots of E. japonicum were uniformly distributed in the forest community. Disturbed plots were aggregately distributed within 5 m × 5 m of one another. Neighboring patches of E. japonicum were predominantly 7.5~10 m apart on average. If the natural populations of E. japonicum were disturbed by human activities, then the aggregation occurred in a shorter distance than the 7.5~10 m distance scale. The Morisita index (IM) is related to the patchiness index (PAI) that showed the 2.5 m × 5 m plot had an overly steep slope at the west and south areas when the area was smaller than 5 m × 5 m. When the patch size was one 2.5 m × 5 m quadrat at the west distributed area of Mt. Geumjeong, the cluster was determined by both species characteristics and environmental factors. The comparison of Moran's I values to a logistic regression indicated that individuals in E. japonicum populations at Mt. Geumjeong could be explained by isolation by distance.

  • Human Human species run into a blind alley due to abnormal weather and climates everywhere in global village. Human beings are helpless against the nature and might begin to learn humbleness just now. However, humans cannot attribute current abnormal weather and climates to only natural phenomenon because we have never been affectionate to global environments sufficiently up to now that results in running into this blind alley. At this point, the only thing that humans can do is to love and care for the earth more. ESG is an emerging topic to cope with this issue and practice of ESG will be the pending mission for the next generation. In this research, 'active participatory learning program for ESG practice' is designed by 'connecting ESG with Entrepreneurship' through over 20 years of experienced current teachers in elementary and junior·senior high school, professors in university and field experts in education. Analysis of learning effectiveness before and after the implementation of education program showed meaningful result in elementary and junior·senior high school. Thus, I would like to suggest a proposal based on concerns about 'What should we do to overcome the global crisis?" by paying attention to ESG from elementary school.

  • The Green Infrastructure Framework refers to an interconnected network formed by greenways that links gardens, parks, green spaces, streams, wetlands, agricultural lands, and green belts. Green infrastructure supports diverse functions to environment, provides various benefits to people, and helps in the community's health and viability. It can store stormwater runoff and abate its non-point source pollutants. Due to its advantages and profits, advanced countries in environment policies have adopted green infrastructure in planning and implementing urban and regional development. The Korean government and municipalities have focused upon grey infrastructure investment in the past, which causes occurrence of natural disasters such as draught, flood, and landslides, degradation of water and air quality, decline of biodiversity, and even inhibition of economic activities. In order to alleviate these problems, it is requested to formulate and implement policies for green infrastructure at the national government level. USA and Korean situation of green infrastructure were investigated; forty components of green infrastructure were drawn. Nine policies utilized in the USA cases were identified, which are applicable to Korea. Among them, five policies can be implemented in public sector and four in private one. The green infrastructure law needed in Korea was suggested. The amendments of laws regarding green infrastructure and alternatives expending it were proposed.

  • In this study, we propose methods for. the efficient management and integrity of groundwater in response to a diminishing supply. As an alternative water resource for the future. we investigated and comparatively analyzed the quality standards of groundwater in the US (New York, Wisconsin and Texas), Austria, Netherlands, Canada, Japan and United Kingdom. These developed countries heavily depend on groundwater, more than 70%, for drinking water and apply those drinking water standards to groundwater quality. However, there exists few differences in the quality standards of groundwater among the countries, because each country possesses its own individual environment and management. In Korea, surface water pollution is getting serious and its water resources are diminishing. Therefore we propose several new quality criteria that many countries regulate at these days for their efficient management of groundwater. There is a need to divide BTEX criterion into Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene, individually. In. addition, it is needed to establish BTEX criteria into agricultural water and industrial water use standards as well as daily life use standards. Also, regulations for some PAHs, showing carcinogenicity, are required. Due to rapid industrialization various hazardous chemicals were utilized and their uses are increasing each year. Therefore, there is a strong need to introduce n~w standards and tighter regulations of the levels. At the same time, the criterion of nitrogenous compounds need' to be regulated individually in order to prevent the damage incurred by the compounds. Several developed countries have established standards for radon, previously caused environmental accidents in Korea. Therefore, we propose the necessity of groundwater quality standards for radon in this study.

  • The present study attempts to provide basic directions to respond to sea-level rise effectively based on the status of sea-level rise and its impact. The impact of the sea-level rise will be one of the most adverse component among climate change due to global warming. The basic approach to deal with sea level rise requires both mitigation and adaptation. Though the emission reduction can reduce a portion of sea level rise, the rising trend cannot be avoided due to the difficulty of the emission reduction and a strong inertia of the ocean. Therefore an effective corresponding direction has to focus on the development of appropriate adaptation strategies. Because sea level rise problem has scientific uncertainty, the corresponding system has to be designed to deal with the processes of information and awareness, planning and design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation in continuous and long-term process. The future task to correspond effectively to the issue in Korea includes the improvement of scientific information, the development of adaptative measures, the enhancement of people awareness, the consensus of corresponding necessity, and formation of integrated corresponding system.

  • Meteorological drought originates from a precipitation deficiency and propagates to agricultural and hydrological droughts through the hydrological cycle. Comparing with the meteorological drought, agricultural and hydrological droughts have more direct impacts on human society. Thus, understanding how meteorological drought evolves to agricultural and hydrological droughts is necessary for efficient drought preparedness and response. In this study, meteorological and hydrological droughts were defined based on the observed precipitation and the synthesized streamflow by the land surface model. The Bayesian network model was applied for probabilistic analysis of the propagation relationship between meteorological and hydrological droughts. The copula function was used to estimate the joint probability in the Bayesian network. The results indicated that the propagation probabilities from the moderate and extreme meteorological droughts were ranged from 0.41 to 0.63 and from 0.83 to 0.98, respectively. In addition, the propagation probabilities were highest in autumn (0.71 ~ 0.89) and lowest in winter (0.41 ~ 0.62). The propagation probability increases as the meteorological drought evolved from summer to autumn, and the severe hydrological drought could be prevented by appropriate mitigation during that time.

  • Climate changes affect greatly natural ecosystem, human social and economic system acting on constituting the climate system such as air, ocean, life, glacier and land, etc. and estimating the current impact of climate change would be the most important thing to adapt to the climate changes. This study set the target area to Nakdong river watershed and investigated the impact of climate changes through analyzing precipitation tendency, and to understand the impact of climate changes on hydrological elements, analyzed elasticity of precipitation-streamflow. For the analysis of precipitation trend, collecting the precipitation data of the National Weather Service from major points of Nakdong river watershed, resampling them at the units of year, season and month, used as the data of precipitation trend analysis. To analyze precipitation-streamflow elasticity, collecting area average precipitation and long-term streamflow data provided by WAMIS, annual and seasonal time-series were analyzed. In addition, The results of this study and elasticity, and other abroad study compared with the elasticity analysis and the validity of this study was verified. Results of this study will be able to be utilized for study on a plan to increase of flood control ability of flooding constructs caused by the increase of streamflow around Nakdong river watershed due to climate changes and on a plan of adapting to water environment according to climate changes.

  • The conservation and restoration of wetlands are essential tasks for the sustainable development of human society and the environment, providing vital benefits such as biodiversity maintenance, natural disaster mitigation, and climate change alleviation. This study aims to analyze the strategic interactions and interests among various stakeholders using game theory and to provide significant grounds for policy decisions related to wetland restoration and development. In this study, hypothetical scenarios were set up for three types of cities: large, medium, and small. Stakeholders such as governments, development companies, environmental groups, and local residents were identified. Strategic options for each stakeholder were developed, and a payoff matrix was established through discussions among wetland ecology experts. Subsequently, non-cooperative game theory was applied to analyze Nash equilibria and Pareto efficiency. In large cities, strategies of 'Wetland Conservation' and 'Eco-Friendly Development' were found beneficial for all stakeholders. In medium cities, various strategies were identified, while in small cities, 'Eco-Friendly Development' emerged as the optimal solution for all parties involved. The Pareto efficiency analysis revealed how the optimal solutions for wetland management could vary across different city types. The study highlighted the importance of wetland conservation, eco-friendly development, and wetland restoration projects for each city type. Accordingly, policymakers should establish regulations and incentives that harmonize environmental protection and urban development and consider programs that promote community participation. Understanding the roles and strategies of stakeholders and the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy is crucial for making more effective policy decisions.
