  • Purpose: This study was conducted for analysis of menu pattern and food diversity of snack menus of child care centers in order to provide preliminary data for establishment of related guidelines for snack menus for child care centers. Methods: Data from 630 snack menus (350 for morning snacks and 280 for afternoon snacks) of March, 2013 from 14 Child Care Information Centers in Seoul provided for child care centers were analyzed. In addition, the menu pattern and food diversity of morning snack menus were compared with those of afternoon snack menus. Results: Differences in menu pattern and food diversity were observed between morning and afternoon snack menus. The majority of snack menus (66.8%) included two menu items and the numbers of menu items of afternoon snack menus were significantly larger than those of morning snack menus. The percentages of "Grains (G)" and "Grains (G) + Milk (D)" patterns were higher in snack menu (G: 18.9%, G+D: 17.1%). Approximately one third of snack menus were composed of only one food group. In addition, 45.6 % of all snack menus comprised milk and only 23.0% included fruits. Conclusion: These results demonstrated the need for improvement in food composition and diversity of snack menus provided by Child Care Information Centers for child care centers. Therefore, to ensure children's intake of nutritionally balanced snacks, it will be necessary to establish more detailed guidelines for the menu pattern and food composition in snack menus for child care centers.

  • The main purposes of this study were to analyze the moderating effect of parenting knowledge in the relationship between socio-demographic factors and parenting style. This study was conducted with the data from 'Panel Study Korean Children(2009).' Among the original data, a sample of 1,637 mothers with infants ranged from 13 to 18 months old was selected. The results of this study were as follows. First, there were significant differences in child's birth-order, mother's education level, and monthly family income. Second, there was a statistically significant difference in the parenting style of mothers in their parenting knowledge. That is, the mother with a high score in parenting knowledge reported more positive parenting style. Lastly, the interaction effects between socio-demographic variables and parenting knowledge on parenting style were statistically significant only with the variables such as child's birth-order and mother's education level. The mothers who cared for their first child and got a high score in parenting knowledge showed the most desirable parenting style, and the mothers whose educational level was under high school graduation and parenting knowledge score was low reported the lowest score in parenting style. These results suggest parenting knowledge should be subject-specifically provided as the differences in socio-demographic variables.

  • This study examines if self-esteem mediates the relationship between marital satisfaction and parenting practice by using the Panel Study of Korean Children of Korea Institute of Child Care and Education, and empirically analyzes if household income causes the difference of mediating effect. For this research, the 3rd Panel Study of Korean Children (2010), including 1,802 children whose average age is 25.75 months (SD=1.37), is employed. Based on the preceding studies which demonstrated the effect of marital satisfaction on mothers' parenting behavior directly and indirectly, a research model is designed by predicting that marital satisfaction might have a positive effect on parenting practice through the mediation of self-esteem. Structuring equation was used to analyze the model as the appropriate research method. The result of the data analysis utilizing a structural equation model is as follows: Firstly, the higher the marital satisfaction of a mother is, the more it influences her positive child-rearing attitude, not only directly, but also indirectly through her self-worth. Secondly, the modifying effect in accordance with the level of the income of a household was found to be meaningful only in the influences of the marital satisfaction to the self-worth. This study result suggests that the enhancement of the self-worth of a mother will contribute to improving the quality of child-rearing, regardless of the level of the income of a household.
