  • The purpose of this study is to provide analytical method to reasonably predict the overall behavior up to destruction of reinforced concrete panel specimens using high-strength reinforcing bar. A total of 12 specimens of reinforced concrete panels with a wall thickness one-third the size of the actual nuclear containment structures under various loading conditions and design parameters were selected and the analysis was performed using a non-linear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST) was developed by the authors. The mean and coefficient of variation for shear strength at cracking point and maximum shear strength from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.03 and 12%, 0.97 and 9%, respectively. For the shear strain at the maximum shear strength from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 0.96 and 30%, respectively. Based on the results, the analysis program that was applied newly modified constitutive equation in this study is judged as having a relatively high reliability for the analysis results.

  • In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the bending moment resisting capacity of a top and seat angle connection, which is a type of partially restrained connection, for a CFT composite frame subjected to cyclic loading. This partially restrained composite CFT connections are fabricated using high strength steel connection bar. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the rotational stiffness, bending moment capacity, and failure modes. A wide scope of additional structural behaviors explain the different influences of the top and seat angle connection's parameters, such as the different thickness of connection angles and the gage distances of the high strength steel bar. The moment-rotation angle relationships obtained from the finite element analysis are compared with those from Richard's theoretical equation.

  • Circular concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) are composite members, which consists of a steel tube and concrete infill. CFTs have been used as building columns and bridge piers due to several advantages such as their strength-to-size efficiency and facilitation of rapid construction. Extensive experimental studies about CFT have been conducted for past decades. However experimental results alone are not sufficient to support the engineering of these components. Complementary advanced numerical models are needed to simulate the behavior of CFT to extend the experimental research and develop predictive tools required for design and evaluation of structural systems. In this study, a finite element modeling technique for CFT was developed. The confinement effects, and behavior of CFT subjected various types of loading predicted by the proposed finite element model for CFT were verified by comparing with test results.

  • The compressive strengths of simply supported columns may be significantly increased by reinforcing them with an assemblage of cross-arms and stayed struts connecting both ends of the columns and the cross-arm members. The purpose of the stayed struts and cross-arms is to introduce partial restraints against translation and rotation, thereby decreasing the effective buckling length of the column. In this study, buckling strengths of the assembled column system have been quantitatively evaluated from the theoretical methods based on both the equivalent spring model and the stiffness matrix formulation. And the results were compared with those from elastic/inelastic analysis using a finite element analysis package program, ABAQUS, for verification purpose. Expected compressive strength curves have been proposed for the assembled column system as a function of slenderness ratio of the simply supported column.

  • TEE Forming process for HDPE(High Density PolyEthylen) pipe has been analyzed by using rigid plastic finite element code, DEFORM-3D. TEE of HDPE pipes is necessary to connect main pipe with branch pipe and change the flow direction of hot water. A HDPE pipe is used as a insulator to maintain the temperature of hot water A butt welding process through TEE forming for a HDPE pipe is a updated process improving the strength of welding part compared to conventional extrusion welding process. The Experiment of Hot and Cold Forming have been performed. The design parameters such as a initial hole shape have been obtained through rigid-plastic finite element analysis, which is applied to the actual manufacturing process.

  • This paper investigates P-S (load-settlement) relationship for the end-bearing Pile in granular material using the CRISP FE Program with the laboratory 2D model pile load test. In order to simulate the effect of end-bearing pile problem in the FEA, the author adopts several forms of slip element around the pile length and the pile tip. Through this study it was found that e degree of non-associated Plastic flow rule incoporated into the Mohr-Coulomb model for the end-bearing pile with the slip elements was a dominant factor in terms of numerical solution convergence. In contrast, the roller boundary used along the pile shaft showed a smooth convergence with respect to the degree of non-associated plastic flow rule.

  • For the composite behavior of steel tube and inner concrete, the shear connectors should be applied to the CFT structures. However, the present design codes don't provide the design criteria that can be applied on shear connectors in the CFT structures typically filled with plain concrete. This study has been carried out to propose design criteria (shear strength and resistance factor) for the stud shear connectors in CFT structures. Experimental tests using the push-out specimens with the plain concrete blocks and finite element analysis were conducted for the purpose of verifying the main failure mode to propose the shear strength of studs in CFT structures. From the results of this study, the main failure mode of studs in CFT structures is splitting crack of concrete and this failure mode reduces shear strength of studs in CFT structures relatively to those embedded in RC blocks.

  • There are many restrictions in the application of high-strength HSSs, including yield strength and yield ratio for the 600-MPa steel. The AISC and Canadian codes recommend that the yield strength and yield ratio of HSS members be 360 MPa and 80%, respectively. It is important to understand the true buckling behaviors of HSSs using high-strength steel at the limit states. There are many experimental data regarding the rectangular HSSs, and the circular ones are not enough for high-strength steel. Therefore, this study was conducted to create a better understanding of the buckling behaviors of the 600- and 400-MPa steels based on the results of the finite-element analysis that was done before the experiment. To understand the structural behaviors of the aforementioned steels, the width-to-thickness ratios, the angle of the web members, the yield strength, and the gap of the web members were selected as the main parameters in this study, and ABAQUS, a general finite-element program, was used.As a result, the compression web member reached elastic buckling in the 600-MPa steel and inelastic buckling in the 400-MPa steel. A brittle fracture occurred in the case where the yield ratio was greater than 80%. At the same time, it was found that the limit strength determined via FEM analysis had a higher value compared to the code evaluation with the variation of the width-to-thickness ratio in the main code member. The change in the connection load in high-strength steels was not identified by the other factors.
