Sion Sono's Films and Religion in Terms of the 'Gaze' : Fantasy, Desire, and Love (소노 시온 영화와 '응시'의 종교: 환상·욕망·사랑)

  • A Japanese director Sion Sono(園子溫, born in 1961), who is not so familiar to us yet, has been depicting the world of violence and sexuality filled with poetic and philosophical messages through the shockingly impressive works such as Strange Circus(2005), Love Exposure(2008), Cold Fish(2010), Guilty of Romance(2011), and so forth after the great success of Suicide Circle(2001) and its second film Noriko's Dinner Table(2005). In addition to these, he has also presented a kind of realistic visions in much more direct ways by Himizu(2011) or Land of Hope(2013) after 3 11 disaster. The purpose of this paper is to try a psychoanalytic interpretation of Sion Sono's film, centering on his Guilty of Romance(愛のむきだし), in terms of the concepts of Jacques Lacan(1901-1981), for example, gaze, objet petit a, fantasy, desire, the imaginary-the symbolic-the real, jouissance, etc. In so doing, this paper will pay special attention to the discourse of love on one hand, exploring the way how to show any new perspective to the religious studies by reading film and religion in association with Lacan on the other hand.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the men's ideal lives and the aspects of variation in Sijo. In this paper the focus is two texts of Saseol-Sijo. One is the Saseol-Sijo without any known author, the other is the Saseol-Sijo written by Lee Jeong-bo. These works were enjoyed by many people to posterity, and they were played a variation. The first aspect of variation is the emphasis on men's magnanimous and amusable life. This aspect is thought to be a result of the interference of entertainment space. The second aspect of variation is to show the awareness of impossibility of riches and honors and belief in his alternative life. We can see the conflict between reality and desire. This case is thought to be enjoyed by the person who can sympathize with that situation. The third aspect of variation is to show the transcendence of desire for worldly success and the interest in a happy old age. This case is worthy of notice because it shows the interest in old age. This case expresses the desire for comfortable life or pleasure-seeking life, and it is thought to be more concerned with a concrete everyday life than an idea. Sometimes we can see the works that show reflection of his(her) life and mature attitude to life. More studies on these works should be done.

The Two Forms of Confucian Golden Rule and Their Ethical Meanings (서(恕)의 두 형태와 그 윤리학적 의미 - 주자(朱子)와 대진(戴震)의 윤리학에서 서(恕)의 위상 -)

  • This Thesis analyzes the two forms of Confucian Golden Rule(Shu恕) that were proposed by Zhu Xi朱熹 and Dai Zhen戴震 each other, and researches their ethical significances. Zhu Xi don't regards Shu as universal ethics by itself, while Dai Zhen identify Shu as the ground of universal ethics, According to this thesis, Zhu Xi thought that Shu has a danger of immoral misusage in some situation because Shu is so simplistic form of identification. Because this, Zhu Xi, for the purpose of blocking arbitrary misusage of Shu and holding universality of ethics, suggests that moral sincerity(Zhong忠) of subject is necessary to practice of Shu. Dai Zhen, however, criticizes Zhu Xi's Ethical Structure. In Dai Zhen's view, Zhu xi's idea that the subject has to establish his own morality through Zhong before practice Shu cannot make him escape from subjectivity necessarily. In this point, Dai Zhen revive Shu. His Shu concept means the reciprocity of human desires to each other. But Dai Zhen's idea, as Zhu Xi worried, has a danger of immoral misusage in some situation. On this problem, this thesis elucidates that Dai Zhen' desire concept is not individual various desires but is common basic desires of existence, thereby attests that Dai Zhen's Shu is safe from immoral misusage. This thesis claim that even if Zhu Xi's and Dai Zhen's position is so different, the ethical aims of two scholars is same. They both attempted to overcome the evil of subjectivism and to procure universality of ethics, furthermore to accomplish social fairness. Consequently, this thesis claims that two scholars both walked in same way because both wanted to establish the universality of Shu and to pursue realization of social fairness.

Postmodern Subject's Anxiety and Obsessive Repetition in Paul Auster's Leviathan (탈근대 주체의 불안과 강박적 반복: 폴 오스터의 『리바이어던』 읽기)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine Paul Auster's Leviathan according to Slavoj Žižek's theory. Analyzing the characters in Leviathan, this paper chiefly discusses the postmodern subject's anxiety and obsessive repetition that the lack of the big Other led to. Section II explains the disintegration of the big Other and the subject's anxiety and obsessive repetition by the interpretation of the characters: Peter Aaron, Maria Turner, and Benjamin Sachs. Aaron wants to write on Sachs's life to overcome his uneasy subject's condition, and to establish the consistent and whole world. But his writing fails to meet his desire, owing to uncertainty of his understanding, and the incompleteness of his writing. In case of Maria, her uneasy subject's condition led to her obsessively repetitive picture-shooting herself and others, which proved to be a meaningless struggle for filling the void of the big Other and herself. Although Sachs already knows the lack and inconsistency of the big Other, he also repetitively tries to establish the consistent and whole Other. In Section III, this paper examines Sachs's terror as he struggles for the preservation of the big Other. His extreme striving also fails to reestablish the big Other as it loses its symbolic effectiveness in the postmodern era because he does not grasp the big Other as an empty Symbolic order, and rejects the premise of the big Other itself.

Zombie, the Subject Ex Nihilo and the Ethics of Infection (좀비, 엑스 니힐로의 주체와 감염의 윤리)

  • The purpose of this article is to compare zombie narratives in relation to the Other. In previous research, the view of zombies as post-capitalist soulless consumers or workers has been frequently expressed. But in this article, I wanted to look at zombies as the main cause of the collapse of the world and a new future. First, zombies do not only mean the representation of the consumer in the late capitalist era. Rather, it is an awakening subject desiring the outside of the system. As you can see from the Uncanny's point of view, zombies are something that we should oppress as freaks and monsters that threatened the Other. To be a zombie in this way is to meet one's other self, the "Fundamentals of Humanity," and it is the moment when everything becomes the subject ex nihilo, the new beginning. Second, the concept of infection shows a new ethic. Zombie cannibalism is different from the selfish love of a vampire who sucks a worker's blood. Zombie cannibalism is an infection, which is a model of Christian love for one's neighbor. It is a moment of awakening and the beginning of solidarity. It is on the waiting for the solidarity that the zombie hangs in such a way, and the attack on the human being is an active illusion. Third, the situation of the end of a zombie narrative is another event for newness. The anger of a zombie serves not just to show monsters, but acts as a catalyst that accelerates the world's catastrophes. The anger of zombies is the messianic violence that stops the false world, and presents a new way. The emergence of zombies and the popular response to them embody a desire for the possibility of a new subject and world.

A Conceptual Study on Transmedia (트랜스미디어에 대한 개념적 고찰)

  • This study recognizes the problem of terminology surrounding the concept of transmedia and attempts to arrange and examine the concept by applying the syntagmes theory of linguistics. In transmedia, the prefix 'trans' means transversal, transformation, and transcendence. This versatility of the word transmedia itself provides a starting point for recognizing the concept of transmedia as an incomplete syntagmes with the verbal paradigm of transversal, transformation and transcendence. Depending on who is the subject of media content, such as media companies, creators, and users, syntagmes of transmedia is linked to terms such as transmedia franchise, transmedia storytelling, and prosumer. The purposes of the three subjects in the discourse of transmedia are different, using IP, expanding the story world, and enjoying the work. However, the common desires of 'repeat', 'extension', 'secure' and 'connection' are found in the purpose of three subjects. If terms like transmedia franchise, transmedia storytelling, and prosumer are 'parols' of the transmedia concept, then repetition, extension, securing and linking are the 'langues' of the transmedia concept.

A Study on "Reason and Madness" in Hegel's 『Phenomenology of Spirit』 - An Interpretation searching for the possibility of the dialogue between Hegel and Lacan - (헤겔 『정신현상학』에서의 '이성과 광기'의 문제 - 헤겔의 라캉과의 대화 가능성에서 본 하나의 해석 -)

  • The Law of the Heart, which appears in the chapter "B. The Actualization of Rational Self-consciousness Through its own Activity" in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit represents that the self-certainty of the reason may be the another face of the Madness. The Reason's indubitable certainty is the testimony of the truth for Descartes, and it also plays a role as the moral maxim of the conscience for Kant. But this subjective certainty unavoidably leads to the Madness of self-conceit, which unifies the consciousness and the reality ignoring the difference between them. The typical attitude appearing in the reformer like Don Quixote and also romantic idealists reveals the fact that modern reason and the psychosis can be both faces of one and the same coin. The Mirror Stage, the Imaginary, and the Formula of the Desire in Lacan's Theory shows that the Image of completeness is the result of Mis-understanding. Even if the Mirror stage is necessary for the Formation of the subject, at the same time it should also lead to the next stage, i.e., the Symbolic Order. It is considered as the realm of the Otherness, which refers to the realm of language or that of law. If the Ego can't go through the symbolic castration acted on by the Name of the Father, he will be remained in the prison of the Imaginary. The Madness also shows the similar process. For Hegel the Discipline of the Labor or the Death as absolute Otherness that inevitably delays the Desire plays the same role as the name of Father. It may be the experience of Separation or that of Sublation of the individual towards the universal, which is equivalent to the experience of Symbolic castration in Lacan. Furthermore there may be the difference between Hegel and Lacan as the following; while in Hegel the experience of Separation is founded on the spontaneity of the Spirit, for Lacan it is to be compelled and structured by the absolute Other.

Su-Hyeon Kim Through Lacan: Perspective of Male Subject Focused on the Melodrama of the , (라깡을 통해 본 김수현 작가의 남성 주체 인식 멜로드라마 <사랑과 야망>, <내 남자의 여자>를 중심으로)

  • This study is the subsequent full-scale research of a TV drama writer who has been out of scholarly pursuits as it explores in-depth Su-Hyeon Kim's underlying consciousness with focusing on her male characters of the and . Su-Hyeon Kim shows difference which clearly distinguishes a melodrama from a home-drama by her own self control, a rare case in TV drama genres. This study, in her distinguished melodrama, analyses the writer's more clearly ignited consciousness. This study enlarges the result of the precedent study by applying the same Lacan's theory to the male characters with the study's female characters. Lacan's concepts of sexual difference notes that the sexual differences is not the product of the fixed differences from the biological organs or the inequal system, custom, but that of the psychological, cultural causes. According to Lacan's sexuation theory, the male subject is an all 'fractured' one of subordinating to symbolic/phallic order by becoming a exceptional being of breaking the order through a fantasy despite his existence of subordinating the order. The writer conceives men and women as the 'same', 'privative', 'fractured' subjects who search for the impossible phallic jouissance in their own different ways, which is the same method of Lacan's. Also the gap of 20 years of two works marks the writer's change of male perspective, in which shows being more accepting, more sex-neutral to a man who can only enjoy the phallic jouissance through a fantasy, while a woman who can enjoy both of the phallic and feminine supplementary jouissance.

  • Popular music is a spce where intrinsic desires and values of young people are well exposed in its process of production and consumption. Previous discussions of Korean youth and youth culture have been proceeding mainly in the sense of their resistances to older generation. However, this is limited in that it neglects the inherent microscopic characteristics of youth culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate what the signs and discourses of youth generation make and share in popular music, and how it relates to social context through the 'Mimesis' theory. As a result, the songs of the 1990s remarkably showed the resistance to the old generation in its narrative structure and have signs which expresses repression and uniformity. On the other hand, the songs of the 2010s have many fragmented signs which has been reconstructed into individualized discourse structure. It is assumed that the songs have been able to gain a lot of empathy and popularity from the young generation by visualizing emotions and desires experienced by themselves in the social context. Through this study, it suggests to pay attention to the sensitivity, desire and creativity of young people in music in the social and cultural context of the time.

An East-Asiatic Idea of Community Space for the Realization of One's Own Self-Desire (동아시아 사유로 본 공동체와 자기실현 공간)

  • This thesis is to reflect prevalently stereo-typed community ideas and find alternative ones that have interconnected, relational, and autonomous acting system for our lives. Probably community is the collective space in which 'I' as the subject in the world meet others and achieve the desirable objects each other. By the way the community spaces could be nation state, societies, and people of nation or ones that deal local problems, environments, and ecology and clubs ect, which are variable according to our concerns. In a sense community pay attention to not societies such as nations or people but lives of individuals, preparing for the territories where men feel convenient in their bodies and mentalities without artificial manipulation. In such a community the participant's vital energy can be stretched actively and relationally, and even if the leader be, there is the politics of doing nothingness not to be the obstacle in the way mens' will goes. In those communities they can live their lives at their nature and realize their dreams without barriers to their way. If we find these ideas of communities which are alternative for our period, we should gaze at Asiatic ones that may be scattered in classics of Confucianism, Daoim and ect. With these concepts and concerns, this paper was drawn up.
