  • Studies were carried out to investigate effects of temperature and photoperiod on diapause induction and of juvenile hormone III and 20-hydroxyecdysone treatment on diapausing adults of the alder leaf beetle, Agelastica coerulea Baly(Chrγsomelidae: Coleoptera). Its life cycle and ovarian development in adults were also observed. The beetle had one year life cycle with egg, larval, pupal and adult periods being 7-10, 19-21, 14-15 days and about 10 months, r respectively. All adults showed a diapause syndrome when the larvae were reared at $20^{\circ}C$ or $25^{\circ}C$ in combination of photoperiods of 16L/8D, 12L/12D, or 8L/16D. Their ovarioles did not s show any development of vitellogenesis before or during diapause and even when exposed at $15^{\circ}C$ after overwintering. When diapausing adults were treated with JH III they resumed feeding and laid several eggs and broke diapause condition temporally. But diapausing adults treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone did not show any response.

  • The study has been carried to investigate a possibility to control several major insect pest of forest by microbial pathogens existing in nature as one of the biological control measure. Microorganisms including polyhedral virus isolated from diseased fall webworm were total of 4 kinds pathogenic microbes among these 4 kinds were polyhedral virus and Bacillus .species. Control effect of these two pathogens appeared to be $70.6\%$ and $49.5\%$, respectively, when they were compared with those of control plot that was $27.8\%$. Each one of bacterium species and fungus species were isolated from diseased Japanese alder leaf beetle. Pathogenisity to the healthy beetle was recognized by the fungus species, while the bacterium showed none of pathogenisity. The fungus was identified as Beauveria sp. and its effect on the beetle control was $96.2\%$ while untreated plot showed $49.2\%$ of dead beetles in the same period. Fifteen species of microbes were isolated from diseased larvae of pine gall midge. Six species out of 15 showed certain level of insecticidal effect to the larvae of the insects. The highest efficiency was showed by a fungus species, Fusarium sp. and was followed by Bacillus SP. I, Spicaria sp. pathogens isolated from larvae of pine gall midge did not affected to both of Japanese alder leaf beetles and fall webworms in any means.

  • Disappearence of the trichlorfon (Dipterex) in the forest, following aerial to control Agelastica coerulea B., were studied by sampling deposits on slide glasses, soils, water, and leaves, and analysing with a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. By analysing the amount remained on slide glasses, it was shown that the pesticide was adequately sprayed and nearly all deposit was lost in a day. The amount deposited under the tree was about 1/100 of the amount at an exposed site. Concentration of trichlorfon in creek water was 10 to 100 times as high as the acute toxic level to zooplankton for 6 to 24 hours, The rain could recontaminate the stream water up to the toxic level. Loss rate of trichlorfon from soils showed variations by sampling sites and was generally slower than from slide glasses. Amount deposited on leaves were less than the calculated or expected amount. The loss from leaves were similar to that from soil.

  • This study eras carried out to investigate the ecological changes on the plant community at erosion controlled area in Yoju-gun, Kyonggi-do. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The depth of organic matters in the soil profile from 4 to 14 years was estimated to be $Y_{(cm)}=0.436X_{(yr)}-0.931$(r=0.978), and 02 layer was $Y_{(cm)}=0.339_{(yr)}-0.931$ (r=0.954). 2. On upper plant layer. Alnus spp. was decreased, on an average, 32% of relative coverage, 12.4% of relative density and 16.8% of relative frequency in each plot for 3 years, as this area was damaged by Agelastica coerulea Baly for 2-3 years. 3. On upper plant layer, relative coverage of Pinus spp. was increased after 6, 7 years in erosion controlled area and was taked the highest plant (more then 40%) from 10 to 14 years. 4. On lower plant layer, relative density of Quercus ssp. (these species has not been planted and sown on erosin controlling) was increased all the plot. 5. The increase of the whole crown projection area was estimated to be $Y_{(m^2)}=18.020X_{(yr)}+18.834$(r=0.954) 6. The biomass was estimated to be 14.88t/ha on elapsed 6 years, 22.84t/ha on 8 years, 35.08t/ha on 10 years, 47.80t/ha on 12 years, 58.13t/ha on 14 years.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the behavior in the water and the impact on aquatic organisms following aerial application of two insecticides in the forest, cyfluthrin and trichlorfon, to control the alder leaf beetle. As active ingredients, 25g of cyfluthrin and 536g of trichlorfon per ha were diluted seperately into 30L of tap water, and applied with a helicopter to the study areas. A model stream study was also conducted in a stream located adjacent to the study area in order to confirm the impact of insecticides on aquatic invertebrates. Cyfluthrin residues in water were $0.62{\mu}g/L$ (1st. application) and $78{\mu}g/L$ (2nd application) immediately after spraying. and decreased, to a non-detectable level after one day, while trichlorfon residue increased to $30.7{\mu}g/L$ one day after spraying and fluctuated for 22th day depending on precipitation after spraying. Cyfluthrin application rapidly increased the number of some drifting aquatic invertebrates during 24-hour period immediately after spraying, but had no effects on the other aquatic organisms such as fish and zooplankton. The largest increase in the number of drifting organisms following application of cyfluthrin was shown by Ephemeroptera, and followed by Trichoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera. However, trichlorfon little affected the number of drifting aquatic invertebrates and zooplankton population.
