  • The aim was to evaluate the impact of nurse-led religious and spiritual interventions (RSI) on the psychological distress of hospice care patients. Pubmed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, RISS, KISS, and ScienceOn were searched until December 2023. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed on 10 studies involving a total of 597 hospice care patients. Overall, nurse-led RSI appeared to have beneficial effects in reducing anxiety (SMD = -1.09, 95% CI = -1.67 to -0.50) and depression (SMD = -1.12, 95% CI = -1.83 to -0.40). These findings suggest that, if applied appropriately, nurse-led RSI can be used as a method to alleviate psychological distress among hospice care patients.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study is aimed at understanding how clinical nurses' terminal care attitude and spiritual health affect their terminal care stress. Methods: Data were collected from self-reported questionnaire filled by 238 nurses at a general hospital in G Metropolitan City. Results: The study showed that nurses' attitudes toward terminal care, spiritual health, marital status, and clinical experience largely affect their terminal care stress. In particular, the higher they scored on terminal care attitudes, the lower they scored on terminal care stress. These variables accounted for 52.3% of the total variance. Conclusion: The study shows terminal care attitude is an important factor for terminal care stress perceived by clinical nurses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an educational intervention program to improve nurses' terminal care attitudes and spiritual health, which in turn would lower their terminal care stress or help them effectively cope with it.

The effects on biological outcomes (pain and functional status) ranged from -0.51 to -0.39, respectively. No publication bias was detected as evaluated by a funnel plot. Spiritual intervention had a moderate effect on psychological and spiritual outcomes and a smaller effect on biological outcomes. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that spiritual intervention can relieve depression and anxiety. Further randomized controlled trials studies are needed to evaluate the effects of spiritual intervention on biological outcomes.
