  • The study aimed to investigate how the science gifted connect and integrate science concepts in the process of problem finding. Research subject was sampled from 228 applicants for a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2015. A creative problem solving test (CPST) in science, which administered as an admission process, was utilized as a reference to sample two groups. Sixty-seven students from top 30% in test scores were selected for the upper group and 64 students from bottom 30% in test scores were selected for the lower group. The CPST, which was developed by researchers, included one item about how to connect two science concepts among eight science concepts, sound, electricity, weight, temperature, respiration, photosynthesis, weather, and earthquake extracted from elementary science curriculum. As results, there were differences in choosing two concepts among four science major areas. The ways of connecting science concepts were characterized by three categories, relation-based, similarity-based, and dissimilarity-based. In addition, relation-based was characterized by attributes, means, influences, predictions, and causes; similarity-based was by attributes, objects, scientific principles, and phenomena, and dissimilarity-based was by parallel, resource, and deletion. There were significant (p<.000) differences in ways of connecting science concepts between the upper and the lower groups. The upper group students preferred connecting science concepts of inter-science subjects while the lower group students preferred connecting science concepts of intra-science subject. The upper group students showed a tendency to connect the science concepts based on similarity. In contrast, the lower group students frequently showed ways of connecting the science concepts based on dissimilarity. In particular, they simply parallelled science concepts.

  • The study aimed to thoroughly observe the process of science-gifted students' career development from elementary to high school in Korea. Eighteen science high school students participated in this study. Data source was retrospective interviews with individuals. Results indicated that the inner factors influencing their career development included 'interest in science' and 'desire for deep understanding of science,' and 'ambition for taking a lead in society by means of science.' The outer factors included 'dissatisfaction with regular schooling,' 'social atmosphere to prefer special purpose high schools,' and 'in-depth educational programs beyond high school levels with brilliant peers.' These inner and outer factors have reacted upon each other in their career development. The implications for proper career development were discussed on the basis of the results.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of mathematically gifted high school students' thinking in design activities using GrafEq. Eight mathematically gifted high school students, who already learned graphs of functions and inequalities necessary for design activities, were selected to work in pairs in our experiment. Results indicate that logical thinking and mathematical abstraction, intuitive and structural insights, flexible thinking, divergent thinking and originality, generalization and inductive reasoning emerged in the design activities. Nonetheless, fine-grained analysis of their mathematical activities also implies that teachers for gifted students need to emphasize both geometric and algebraic aspects of mathematical subjects, especially, algebraic expressions, and the tasks for the students are to be rich enough to provide a variety of ways to simplify the expressions.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the significant characteristics shown in the field of mathematics by a gifted child, the educational curriculum for this child, and to find what has to be set in place in the areas of teacher's teaching methods and programs. The important aspect of these ideas is that one has to completely understand and know the characteristics of the gifted in order to give them the opportunity to discover their underlying talents and to develop upon those skills by giving them suitable and appropriate education for their intellectual state. This study focuses on the thoughts and behavior of a gifted male child, from his third to fifth grade, and the study shows the results and analysis of data gathered from close observation and interview, and a collection of documents gathered from the child. This study is analyzed from three different perspectives: 1. The typical life and surroundings of this gifted child, and how he was raised in this particular environment. This also shows the significant event that allowed others to recognize him as gifted. 2. Identification of how a gifted child's mind works in the field of mathematics. This attempts to analyze methods the child uses to arrive at a solution to a problem. 3. Exploration of mathematical attitude of the child. This shows the child's interest in mathematics, and the willingness to find better and more efficient ways to reach a solution. This also shows the child's ability to explain his purpose and methods of problem solving in detail, and the focus and clarity in communication of mathematics. This study will enlighten the readers with information on the importance of advanced education specifically designed for the gifted. In development of advanced education programs, it is necessary to comprehend the minds of the mathematically gifted, and furthermore, this will help in defining an appropriate teaching method and curriculum for a better equipped educational system.

  • The genus Bryophyllum is best known for many of its species having the ability to produce plantlets on their leaves. This phenomenon is also known as vegetative reproduction. Differential expressed gene (DEG) detecting technique was applied in order to survey the genes involved in the process of asexual reproduction for plantlet formation. Based on homology search using the NCBI database after screening of genes, 38 genes were identified from a total of 69 DEGs. Most of these DEGs were related to cell division, to intercellular signal transduction, and to hormone (cytokinin and ethylene) signaling.

  • The aim of this study was to examine characteristics between nutrient intakes, body composition and physical fitness in gifted athletic boys. The subjects were conducted in 50 boys aged 9~12 years living in Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Dietary intake information was collected from participants using 3-day food recorded and body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and their anthropometric parameters were measured. Swimming group's daily energy intakes were significantly higher compared to those of other groups. Athletics and swimming groups were significantly taller than gymnastics. Swimming group was significantly higher than gymnastics group in weight, fat mass, body fat percent and lean body mass. Athletics and swimming groups were significantly longer than gymnastics group in sit and ball throwing. Swimming group was significantly better than other groups in sit up, and athletics group was significantly faster than gymnastics group in 50 m run. In correlation result for nutrient intake and body composition: 1) Body weight shows positive correlation with protein, phosphorus, sodium, vitamin $B_1$, C and niacin. BMI shows positive correlation with sodium and niacin. Fat mass shows positive correlation with niacin and folate. Body fat% shows positive correlation with vitamin C, E, niacin and folate.
