This study aims to illustrate students' and teachers' perceptions towards certification of English proficiency and proficiency- based curriculum, and to investigate their needs for developing college English program. A total of 597 students and 28 teachers participated in the survey. The findings showed that both groups acknowledged the usefulness of the certification of English proficiency and proficiency-based curriculum. However, both groups showed a negative response to 'waive test' (testing for the replacement of English required class). They also expressed high level of needs in increasing the number of courses and credit hours, reducing the class size, and improving facilities. Both groups perceived speaking and listening as more important skills, while students showed various preferences for effective language practice activities. The findings of this study suggest t hat the introduction of certification of English proficiency should he supplemented with follow-ups both in pedagogical aspect and on administrative level.

It has been about 20 years since the English subject was formally taught in public elementary schools in Korea. The present research aims to analyze the studies regarding 'primary English' implemented in Korea during the time period. I have investigated 6,467 theses or research papers in total that were published in Korea with the help of the corpus programs Utagger and WordSmith Tools. The results show that for the last 20 years the number of overall studies appears to have increased since the year 1997, although the recent trend seems to be in recession. The research scope ranges from 'teaching-learning interaction' to 'curriculum' and 'assessment', which have been steadily investigated for 20 years. Furthermore, researchers sometimes appear to have followed the English education policy by conducting particular investigations like 'immersion program' or 'native English speaking teachers' in a certain time period. Recently, researchers started to have interest in the cutting-edge ICT. In conclusion, the academic field of 'primary English' in Korea has grown in quantity, and the spectrum of research areas has been expanded for the past 20 years. It is hoped that the results of this research will help set a new direction for future research.

인스턴트 메신저는 커뮤니케이션 도구로서 초등학생까지도 널리 사용하고 있고 엔터테인먼트 목적 등 다양한 메신저 에이전트가 등장하였다. 이러한 메신저 에이전트는 자기주도적 학습이 가능한 학습 프로그램으로 적용할 수 있으며 따라서 본 연구에서는 초등 영어교육과정과 연계성 있으며 가상의 대화상대와 활발한 상호작용이 가능한 초등 영어 메신저 에이전트를 설계 및 구현하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 초등학생들의 영어 학습에 도움을 주고 영어에 대한 흥미를 유발하는 효과를 줄 것으로 기대된다.

This article explores how we pursue and operate the English medium instruction(EMI) in engineering colleges so as to educate global engineers. Engineering students in the 21st century society need to have fundamental work in languages, cultural differences, and strategies for working with diverse colleagues. EMI is not sufficient for preparing our engineering students to cope with the changed environments in our globalized society. Based on the case study, we emphasize that EMI needs to be located in the context of global engineering education which demands our understanding of different cultures and communication practices. We also suggest some programs how we develop our EMI circumstances.

As importance of English has been getting more important with globalization, English education for preschoolers has drawn more attention from parents who were born in 1970's and 1980's. Demands for English education are very intense mainly because parent generation has experienced importance of English through own career and they have only one or two children, resulting parents' willingness to invest more on children's education. In order to response high demands for English education, Korean public education system has introduced more intense English education curriculum for younger children and put more weights on English education even for preschoolers. Even though there are numbers of studies to support effectiveness of English education for pre-school age children, adaption of English education for them without through preparation may cause unwanted results on children's learning experience. Hence, it is imperative to develop guideline for English education targeting pre-school age children based on through studies. The purpose of this paper is to justify English education for preschoolers based on various theories for language acquisition, research effectiveness of edutainment animation for English education, and provide basic guideline to develop edutainment animation in the future. To achieve this goal, this study visits how each theory emphasizes importance of language education in preschool age children and analyzes well-known edutainment animation titles by comparing them per characteristics. Furthermore, specifically from participation-inducing animation for education, each component, such as characters, story structure, & story telling methods, has been discussed. Based on the findings from this paper, basic guidelines to develop edutainment animation are developed by suggesting teaching tools for English education for preschoolers.

The wide range of the Freshmen English placement test scores implies the necessity of differentiating classes. However without a careful and detailed plan, there could be trial and error which would cause harmful and complicated troubles to students. This paper will report a case of grouping Freshmen for English classes at the Engineering College of a provincial university. The main procedures include preparing and executing the placement test, grouping classes, preparing and executing a common final test, preparing grading policy, and reporting. Each procedure is going to be explained and evaluated to improve the quality of English classes and the ability of students at the Engineering College.

This paper emphasizes the effect of using poetry in the University General English education and suggests the teaching method of English education with a Frost's poem, "Out, Out- ." These days, learner-centered English education and integrative study of four linguistic functions, reading, listening, speaking and writing are considered important in the University General English class. Poetry is very effective text for the education purposes. Poetry techniques like a visual image, rhythm, rhyme, or repetition are actually mnemonics and strongly connected to the enhancement of memory and oral linguistic function. This paper suggests the specific education methods in the poetry selection, pre-reading step, reading step and after- reading step with concrete examples of "Out, Out-." These education methods through the 'oral text' can be a good and sustainable model for learner-centered education.

T미국 공립학교들에 다양한 문화적, 언어적, 인종적 배경을 가진 학생들이 점차 늘고 있다. 최근 10년간 이 학생들의 수는 52% 이상 증가하였으며 (from 1.4 to 3.04 million) 전문가들은 이 학생들의 수는 계속적으로 증가하여 2020년에 50% 에 도달할 것으로 예상한다. 그리고 이들을 위한 영어 교육을 위해 효율적인 연구와 투자를 계속적으로 하고 있다. 미네소타 주 역시나 공립학교 등에서 30% 이상의 외국인 학생들이 특별한 영어 교육 프로그램으로 교육을 받고있다. 따라서, 이 연구는 미네소타 주의 한 주요도시에 위치한 고등학교를 모델로 이 학생들의 효율적인 영어교육을 위해 액션 프랜을 개발하는 과정을 설명하고 이 액션 플랜을 위한 주요 이론들을 소개하는데 목적을 둔다. 주요이론들은 Differentiated Instruction, SWOT Analysis, 그리고 Action Research Methods 등 이며 Special Educational Needs 개념을 정리하였다. 본 연구는 국제 교류의 증가에 따라 한국에 늘어나고 있는 외국인들과 그들의 자녀들을 위한 한국어 교육방법과 노력들을 제고해 보는 계기로 삼고자 한다. 그리고 이 연구 방법은 현재 한국 농촌 지역에 사는 다문화 가정 자녀들의 한국어 교육을 위한 프로그램 개발 및 실천 연구에 응용되어질 수도 있다.

The purpose of the present study was to suggest basic word lists and contents of English for mobile games and to propose how to apply basic word lists to mobile games for English vocabulary learning because it is possible that some potential advantages of mobile games can provide elementary school students with new learning environment for English vocabulary learning. To support this idea, firstly, the basic word lists were selected from essential word lists in the national English curriculum, the word lists from textbooks, and five randomly chosen word books. Secondly, mobile games were examined and appropriate mobile games for learning English words was selected. Lastly, the basic word lists for mobile games were applied to the selected game.

코딩 교육이 초등학생부터 의무화 되어 프로그래밍의 중요성이 날이 갈수록 높아지고 있고, 현재 전 세계 공용어인 영어는 필수라 할 수 있게 된 사회이다. 본 논문에서는 유아에게 코딩과 영어를 지루하고 어려운 것일 거라는 틀을 깨고 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 하는 STEAM 코딩 교육을 적용한 유아용 영어 학습 콘텐츠를 제안한다. 유아가 직접 방향 코딩을 하여 길을 찾아가는 과정에서의 창의력 발달과 목적지에 도착했을 때 해당 과일의 영단어를 확인하고 발음을 듣게 하여 언어능력발달에 도움이 될 것 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
