  • The purpose of this experiment was to investigate boron deficient symptom of sugar beet. Sugar beet affected by boron deficiency was anatomized and observed by microscope and electron microscope. The sugar beet plants affected onboron deficiencyu with water culture and those of the experimental farm alike contained a small amount of boron. The symptom of boron deficiency began to show dark-brown lines at the ventral suface of the basal part of petiole and then, in the ridge of young leaf, growing point became darkened due to necrosis. The leaf blade was wrinked severely and finally the growth was stunted. The boron deficiency began with necrosis of the epidermis of the ventral surface of the basal part of petiole, and parenchyma under it. Necrosis and disintegration of the ridge of young leaf began to take place and were expanded gradually. Electron microscopic examination of boron deficient sugar beet plants revealed that chloroplasts degenerated, and appeared to contain larger amounts of starch, also observed larger number of osmophilic granules. And they peculiarly were found polyhedral crystals in the certain deficient chloroplasts.

  • Three rice cultivars, Aichi-asahi, Toyotama and Yamabiko, possessing a resistance gene $Pi-\alpha$ were evaluated for penetration, hyphal growth in the leaf epidermis and lesion formation using 6 isolates of Pyricularia oryzae by treating pre- and post disposing temperatures of $23/15^{\circ}C\;and\;29/21^{\circ}C$ (day/night) regimes, respectively. Percent penetration of the fungus was higher on the seedlings disposed at $29/21^{\circ}C$ regime and more lesions were formed at 7 days after inoculation than at $23/15^{\circ}C$ regime. Degree of hyphal growth and number of host cells with hyphal growth were remarkably increased from 72 to 96 hr after inoculation at $29/21^{\circ}C$ regime. However, lesion formation on the seedlings disposed at $23/15^{\circ}C$ regime was delayed, possibly as a result of the suppressed hyphal growth until 96 hr after inoculation.

  • To find ideal leaf types for soybean breeding program, we examined the relationships among leaf anatomical and morphological characteristics and $\textrm{CO}_2$ assimilation on the different leaflet shape of soybean (Glycine max). In anatomical characters of leaf, palisade and spongy cells were thicker in both small seed cultivars with narrow leaflet and large seed cultivars with wide leaflet than others. $\textrm{CO}_2$ uptake per plant and leaf thickness were significantly associated with seed yield per plant, showing difference among the soybean cultivars. Although the leaf area was lower for narrow leaflet cultivars, which had a significantly higher photosynthetic rate per plant comparable to the wide leaflet cultivars.

  • The nutritional status of sulfur in rice plants grown on various field conditions different in soil fertility, fertilizers used and weather was investigated as follows. 1. The critical percentage of sulfur in rice shoot grown in a sulfur deficient field appears to be over 0.2 around 30 days after transplanting. 2. The mean sulfur contents at harvesting stage were 0.22% and 0.43% in the ear and straw, respectively and increased more in the straw by the application of ammonium sulfate. 3. The ratio of sulfur contents in the straw and ear (straw/ear) showed the increasing tendency from north to south only in the fertilized fields. But it was not as such in the percent translocation, the mean values of which were 26% and 29% in the fertilized and non-fertilized, respectively. 4. The sulfur uptake amounted to 6kg and 10kg per acre in the non-fertilized and fertilized, respectively. 5. The sulfur content was decreased in the order of leaf blade+leaf sheath, stem and ear, and was higher in the low productive field than that of high productive field.

  • In order to analyze growth and yield of rice population at the stand point of productive ecology, productive structure and growth rate of rice plants and effects of their related factors were studied. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. High crop growth rate was maintained throughout growing season when rice plants grew in population compared to a single rice plant. Since crop growth rate in rice stands were also higher at ripening stage, higher yields were obtained. 2. Higher crop growth rate of rice plants in population was maintained by the increase of leaf area rather than by net assimilation rate. 3. As the overgrowth of upper leaves of plant population in some rice varieties transmission of light into lower leaves was inhibited and thus most of them were eventually died before flowering. 4. In the case of rice population, the ratio of productive organ to non-productive organ, light transmission rate and nitrogen contents of active leaf blade were lower than individual rice plants under isolated condition.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the efficient propagation method of Cyrtomium caryoptideum var. coreanum by sporophyte culture. The influence of origin of explant sources (rhizome, blade, or stipe) and homogenization of culture materials on shoot regeneration were investigated. As a result, only rhizome explant exhibited the organogenic capacity and the shoot regeneration was promoted by homogenization of culture material. Vigorous and excellent growth of multiple shoots was induced on the half-strength of inorganic salts containing MS medium. It was appeared that optimum nitrogen content of shoot regeneration was half-strength of nitrogen containing MS medium (30mM) and optimum sucrose concentration was 1%. Addition of $NaH_2PO_4$ to culture medium generally enhanced shoot multiplication and promoted growth of the regenerants. The organogenic capacity of homogenized rhizomes was especially promoted on medium supplemented with $5{\mu}M$ kinetin plus $5{\mu}M$ IBA. The incorporation of $0.1\sim0.2%$ activated charcoal on medium supplemented with growth regulators prevented the formation of multiple bud primordia - nodule-like bud clusters and improved the normal morphogenesis of sporophytes.

  • A new species, Potentilla baekdusanensis M. Kim, is described here. It is found in Baekdusan Mt., Korea. Potentilla baekdusanensis shares several characteristics (pinnately compound leaves, pubescent leaf blades and leaf petioles, different leaflets size, and absent stolons) with the related species P. fragarioides. However, this new species has small plants with short and curved hairs, 7 leaflets, small lower leaflets, a glabrous leaflet margin, and yellow petals with a reddish yellow base. In contrast, P. fragarioides are large plants with long and straight hairs, 9-15 leaflets, large lower leaflets, a ciliate leaf margin, and yellow petals without a reddish yellow base.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilizer level on forage yield and feed value, and to clarify the optimum nitrogen fertilizer level of rye in middle west area when cultured in paddy field. The field experiment treated 5 levels of nitrogen fertilization was carried out at Yesan from Oct. 1990 to June 1991. The fresh and dry weight increased with increased nitrogen fertilizer level by 30kg /10a, but dry matter ratio decreased. The ratio of leaf blade and leaf sheath in rye plant increased with increased nitrogen fertilizer level, but the ratio of stem and inflorescence decreased. The content and yield per unit area for protein, total digestible nutrient(TDN). Minerals, and energy increased with increased nitrogen fertilizer level, while acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) decreased. The ratio of available protein among crude protein became higher with increased nitrogen fertilizer level. The optimum clipping time for net energy gain(NEG) and net energy maintenance(NEM) were 10 days earlier than milk stage for conventional items including TDN and proteins.

  • To search for the optimal nitrogen application method for the machine transplanting to Dongjinbyeo, compared to conventional method, in the various methods of nitrogen split application at different growth stages of rice plant. This experiment was performed at Honam Crop Experiment Station, in 1985 year. The results were as followed; the nitrogen contents of leaf blade was the highest at maximum tillering stage under the conventional method and reduction division stage under the nitrogen top-dressing at panicle initiation and 5 times split application of nitrogen for the whole rice growth stages. CGR, RGR and NAR after heading was highest under 5 times split application of nitrogen for the whole rice growth stages. Relationships between CGR and NAR, NAR and RGR, CGR and RGR showed the positive correlation significantly at each rice growth stage, respectively, and showed more high correlation according to further rice growth stages. The degree of contribution of CGR to rice grain yield was the highest at 20 days after heading. Rice grail: yield was higher under top-dressing of nitrogen at panicle initiation and basal application (30%) + 4 times equal dispensing top-dressing after basal application of nitrogen than conventional method.

  • The objective of experiment was to investigate the effects of sowing dates on forage yield and growth characteristics of rye in paddy field cultivation in midwest region of Korea. The field experiment treated with 5 levels of sowing dates was carried out at Yesan from october 1990 to june 1991. The field emergence rate and winter survival rate were decreased with delay in sowing dates by the days from sowing to emergence were took a long period of time. The crop growth rate were increased with early in sowing date. The fresh and dry weight of rye were increased with early in sowing date, but there was no significant differences between sowing date from Oct. 5 to Oct. 25. The highest fresh yield was obtained at flowering stage and the highest dry yield was obtained at milky stage. The ratio of leaf blade and leaf sheath in rye plant were decreased with earlier sowing date and delayed harvest, but the ratio of stem and inflorescence was vice versa.
