Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADL), participation and quality of life in community-dwelling elderly. Methods : Cognitive function, ADL, participation and quality of life were assessed in the 144 elderly people residing in the community. We used MMSE-K for measuring cognitive function, K-ADL for ADL, K-ACS for participation, and GQOL for quality of life. Results : Cognitive function was significantly correlated with social activity of participation and quality of life (physical health, psychological health, social relations and economic level). ADL was significantly correlated with participation (instrumental ADL, leisure activity) and all sub-areas of quality of life. Social activity of participation were significantly correlated with all subarea of quality of life except physical health. Among the variables, the most relevant variable was leisure activity. Conclusion : It was related to quality of life in the order of participation, ADL, and cognitive function. Among the sub-areas of participation, leisure activity was the most correlated with quality of life. This study, thus, aimed to provide basic data for successful elderly life by examining the correlation between cognitive function, daily life activity, participation and quality of life in community-dwelling elderly.
This paper empirically analyses patterns of time allocation of the elderly, examining economic participation and volunteer work or social activities under the assumption that such activities have positive effects not only on the individuals and on the local communities but also on the society as a whole. As the result of descriptive analysis on the Korean Time Use Survey 1999, 2004 and 2009, the adults aged 60 to 64 years decrease time for paid work rapidly while increase time for passive leisure comparably slowly. In terms of time for active leisure, they devote less time to volunteer work and social activities, however, more time to self-centered activities such as education, cultural events, sport and fitness, and religious work. The overall pattern of decrease in time on economic or social participation for the elderly appeared be more significant in the birth cohorts of the early 1940s than those born in the late 1930s. The analysis implies that it is necessary for the government to encourage them to participate in community activities, either economic or social, with necessary policy responses. The result of the Tobit analysis on the dependent variables of each type of the 6 leisure activities demonstrated the self-centered active leisure time has increased over the last decaseds, whose pattern appeared to be more strengthened when the proportion of the elderly with higher education has increased.

The purpose of this study was to provide basic information on leisure participation and leisure exploration of community-dwelling stroke patients through a multi-dimensional leisure participation evaluation tool. The subjects in this study were 35 people living with stroke in the community. As a result of study, the most involved leisure activities were in order of watching TV, communicating, and exercise alone. Most of the satisfaction level of leisure participation was 7-10 points, but exercise alone was 5.2 points due to the purpose of health management. Leisure exploration was the most frequent exercise alone and sports, and interest was 8-10 points. The most important obstacles for leisure participation were physical problems depending on the nature of the stroke disease. Previous research in leisure motivation has been limited in terms of its overwhelming interest in beneficial outcomes of leisure activities, its short of coverage on wide range of modern leisure activities, and its lack of cultural perspectives. In order to overcome those limitations, the present research conducted a survey in which motives to participate in 48 leisure activities and frequency and importance of the activities were assessed. We categorized 7 categories of leisure activities (skill-involved, social, personal hobby, goal-oriented, relaxing, digital, and voluntary) and 7 categories of leisure motives (achievement, intimacy, psychological comfort, sensation-seeking, secondary, self-promoting, and no-fun). On the basis of the categorizations, momentary leisure motives and individual differences of the leisure motives were conceptualized and tested as a preceding factor of selection of leisure activities. This conceptualization was discussed in its practical implication of leisure education, consulting, and policy.
This study aimed to explore the life experiences of middle-aged and older women with disabilities using the photovoice method. Six middle-aged and older women with physical disabilities or brain lesions selected four themes through group discussion and shared their experiences using photos they took that reflect the four themes: my worsening health and the way I manage my health (identifying red flags for ill health, trying to coping with poor health), my leisure life (my limited leisure activities, enjoying my own leisure time), my social participation (participating in social activities that give me pleasure, participating in social activities to help make a better society), and my later life (worryingabout financial hardships and being alone in my later life, hoping for happiness in my later life). Study findings indicate the value of services and policies for middle-aged and older women with disabilities that provide guidance for health management and psychological counseling, extend opportunities for leisure and community participation, and provide skill training and educational programs for promoting financial and emotional independence in later life.
