  • The purpose of this study is to test the mediating effect of coping plan and action plan in the relation between leisure-time physical activity(LTPA) intention and exercise behavior and to extend the literature in theory of planned behavior. We examined the mediating role of implementation plan-namely coping plan and action plan in the effect of intention to physical activity on exercise behavior. To attain the goal of study, we asked collegiate students (n=253; male=118, female=105) report their intention toward LTPA, coping plan, action plan, and self-reported exercise behavior. Collected data was analyzed using statistical program software (i.e., SPSS, AMOS) for SEM and mediation analyses. The results revealed that intention toward LTPA was positively related to implementation plan (coping plan and action plan) and exercise behavior. Collegiate students' intention toward LTPA positively predicted their exercise behavior mediated by implementation plans. Specifically, LTPA intention among collegiate students predicted their exercise behavior via coping plan and action plan. The findings showed that coping plan and action plan partially mediated in the relation between LTPA intention and exercise behavior. In conclusion, students' intention to be getting physical active in leisure-time physical activity explains lifetime physical activity or the level of recent exercise behavior possibly via coping plan (e.g., how to overcome barriers to exercise) and action plan (e.g., when and where I exercise and get physically active). The conceptualization of coping plan and action plan in implementation plans and test of its model better to explain the intention-behavior gap would help exercise instructors or practitioners effectively develop their plans and strategies toward targeted exercise behavior.

  • This paper empirically analyses patterns of time allocation of the elderly, examining economic participation and volunteer work or social activities under the assumption that such activities have positive effects not only on the individuals and on the local communities but also on the society as a whole. As the result of descriptive analysis on the Korean Time Use Survey 1999, 2004 and 2009, the adults aged 60 to 64 years decrease time for paid work rapidly while increase time for passive leisure comparably slowly. In terms of time for active leisure, they devote less time to volunteer work and social activities, however, more time to self-centered activities such as education, cultural events, sport and fitness, and religious work. The overall pattern of decrease in time on economic or social participation for the elderly appeared be more significant in the birth cohorts of the early 1940s than those born in the late 1930s. The analysis implies that it is necessary for the government to encourage them to participate in community activities, either economic or social, with necessary policy responses. The result of the Tobit analysis on the dependent variables of each type of the 6 leisure activities demonstrated the self-centered active leisure time has increased over the last decaseds, whose pattern appeared to be more strengthened when the proportion of the elderly with higher education has increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore leisure constraints and the strategies to overcome leisure constraints of career women, and to examine the difference in leisure constraints and leisure constraints negotiation strategies between married and unmarried career women. In Seoul, a total of 440 career women selected using the cluster quota sampling method participated in the current study. Finally, 433 responded data with the exception of 7 unreliable surveys were employed for the analyses such as frequency, exploratory factor, reliability analysis, and t-test. Main findings were as follows; First, six factors including interpersonal, intrapersonal, time, expense and information, environmental, and physical constraints were extracted for career women. Environment and time commonly constrained their participation in leisure activities the most. Second, five factors including skill acquisition, finding alternative activity, control intensity, finding partners, and financial and time management strategies were extracted for them. Third, there were the differences in time and physical constraints between two groups and married career women's constraints were higher than singles. Finally, there was the difference in skill acquisition strategy and married career women's it was higher than the other group.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing insufficient physical activity in older cancer patients. Data were analyzed from the 2014 Survey of Living Condition of Elderly study. Metabolic Equivalent Tasks(MET) hours were calculated using self-reported weekly frequency, duration and types of physical activities to measure the degree of physical activity. Factors influencing insufficient physical activity in older adults included limitations in ADL and IADL, depression, impaired cognitive function, current smoker, lower levels of social activity participation and life satisfaction with social or leisure activities. When adjusted for demographic factors, patients with ADL limitation had 2.8 times (OR=2.762, CI=1.110, 7.952) higher risks of insufficient physical activities than those without. Current smokers had 2.4 times (OR=2.426, CI=1.113, 5.288) higher risks than non-smokers.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the personal and social environmental factors affecting leisure time physical activity (LTPA) among adults living in rural communities. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 282 adults living in three rural towns of Chungcheongbuk province. Leisure time physical activity was assessed through the Korean version of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), and social influence and social cohesion of social environment were assessed using reliable and validated measures. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore personal and social environmental factors associated with LTPA. Results: The overall prevalence of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) was 40.0%. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that LTPA participation was associated with gender (OR=2.60, 95% CI=1.47-4.58), healthy eating (OR=1.15, 95% CI=1.01-1.31), unhealthy eating (OR=0.70, 95% CI=0.53-0.93) and social influence for physical activity (OR=1.11, 95% CI=1.03-1.20). However, social cohesion was not correlated with engaging in LTPA. Conclusion: Both personal and social environmental factors are associated with LPTA among rural adults living in Eup-Myen regions. Interventions to promote LTPA would likely benefit from considering healthy dietary intake and social influence for physical activity.
