  • A new earth pressure equation acting on the vertical shafts in cohesionless soils has been proposed by modifying the equations proposed by others. In order to verify the modified equation, model tests which can control uniform wall displacement with depth to radial direction were conducted. Model tests were performed with three different wall friction angles and two different relative densities. The measured values were larger than estimated values when assuming $\lambda=1$ ; smaller than those when assuming $\lambda=1-sin\phi$. The parameter, $\lambda$ is the ratio of tangential stress to vertical stress and is the most critical value in proposed equation. A method which can estimate the earth pressure on vertical shafts in layered soils is also proposed by reasonably assuming the failure surface of layered soils and using the modified equation. In order to verify the proposed method, in-situ measurement data have been collected from the three in-situ vertical shafts installed in layered soils. Most of earth pressures converted from measured data match reasonably well with estimated values using proposed method.

  • A deterioration of typical reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck is due to the use of calcium chloride, cracks and water penetration inside of the deck slab with steel reinforcement. In order to eliminate the defects of RC decks in terms of material, therefore, the steel-strapped deck system is studied and developed by maximizing the arching effect while the girders are restrained using straps in lateral direction to the bridge. This parametric study was performed to analyze the structural characteristics of steel-strapped deck, and to identify the factors of the thickness, span length and lateral restraint stiffness of deck slab considering the concrete non-linearity. Finally, a design equation, which is adequate to South Korea, is suggested.

  • Researches on the induced trench method using compressible materials such as clay, mud, straw, or EPS block have been performed to reduce the load acting on buried conduits under a high fill. The induced trench method has the problems that the arching area due to the compressible arching material is one dimensional or localized in a narrow zone. The main purpose of this study is to solve the problems of the induced trench method mentioned above. The various types of laboratory model tests are conducted to find the effects of the variations of EPS block width, multilayer application, soil density, and diameter of the flexible steel pipe. A series of model tests was conducted to evaluate the reduction of earth pressure on conduits using EPS block. Based on modeling test it is found that the magnitude of vertical earth pressure on conduits was reduced about 60% compared with conventional flexible conduit systems.

  • In case of the lateral movement accurring at soft ground where a row of piles are installed, the crown failure at external arch zone of soil arching is firstly developed, and the cap failure at wedge zone in front of piles is lastly developed. Therefore, the lateral earth pressure acting on a row of piles due to soil movement should be calculated in each condition of crown and cap failures around piles. A theoretical equation of crown failure can be proposed using a cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The theoretical equation of crown failure is mainly affected by two factors. One is related to soil properties such as internal friction angle, cohesion and horizontal pressure, and the other is related to pile factors such as diameter, installation interval. Meanwhile, the yield range of lateral earth pressure is established in the estimation of theoretical equation based on crown and cap failures around piles. The theoretical values based on crown and cap failures are compared with the experimental values. The experimental values are located in the range proposed by theoretical values. Thus, it is confirmed that the theoretical values proposed in the study are very reasonable.

  • Coulomb's theory has been usually used in practice to obtain lateral earth pressure against retaining wall. Such theory is based in the assumption that the lateral pressure is a tai angular distribution, since the point of applying the lateral thrust cannot be obtained by using it. However, the results of laboratory and field tests showed that the lateral pressure was not a triangular but a nonlinear distribution. To overcome the drawback of the Coulomb's theory, the different theoretical approaches(Handy, 1985. Kingsley, 1989 : Kellogg, 1993, Chung et at,1993, 1996a) were performed for gravity wall backfilled by cohesionless soil. On the other hand, for retaining wall backfilled by ,cohesive soil, theoretical analyses were carried out only on the basis of the Rankine's or Coulomb's concepts, but the equations showed different results. Here was newly derived the equations of lateral pressures under undrained condition against gravity wall backfilled by cohesive soil. They were based on the Coulomb's wedge, adopted the arching concept. Some of the equations were derived by neglecting tension crack, while the others by considering it. Comparative results for applying different examples showed that the equation considering tension crack might be reasonable.

  • The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebar. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variable was reinforcement ratio of GFRP rebar. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior.

  • In the shallow tunnel, the surrounding ground could be loosened and deformed, which could be the cause of stress change in the ground. Terzaghi has clarified the development of a ground arching induced by the deformation of a tunnel crown in the trap door tests. However, he considered only the case in which that the tunnel crown deformed uniformly. He did not consider the effect of deformation shapes. Therefore, the relation between the shape of the ground relaxation above the tunnel crown and the deformation shape of the tunnel crown is not clear yet. In this study, model tests were performed for the three types of the tunnel crown, such as uniform, concave and convex shapes. As results, it was found that the vertical load would be transferred in various types depending on the deformation shapes of the tunnel crown.

  • The study, with regard to unsymmetrically inclined backfilled wall, was intended to estimate the lateral earth pressure, develop the equation for lateral earth pressure and eventually identify the mutual behavior, based on the modified Kellogg theory, while changing the width between the walls, wall angle, relative density and wall friction angle. To verify the geostatic pressure obtained from the study, the results in the wake of 62 kinds of model tests performed were compared and evaluated with the behaviors based on theoretical equations. As a result, the wall inclination angle was found to be the factors affecting the earth pressure the most, when both walls were inclined unsymmetrically. And the narrower the backfill space and the larger the wall inclination angle to the horizontal level, the greater the effect of the wall friction. The equation considering the wall friction reaction indicated the value, which was closer to the actually-measured earth pressure, and when the width between the warts was narrow, the arching effect appeared to be great, thereby indicating the difference between the measured earth pressure, theoretically calculated earth pressure and the geostatic pressure proved to be insignificant.

  • Since the composite ground design method is easy to apply for calculation or numerical analysis, it is applied to the design of cement mixing methods. However, the comparison studies between analysis and actual results such as a trial test and construction for the cement mixing method are few because the composite ground design method was developed for the compaction pile (SCP, GCP) methods. In this study, the results of various analysis methods, such as the composite ground analysis method (1 case) and the individual pile method (3 cases), were compared with actual measurements through a two-dimensional finite element numerical analysis. In case of the surface settlements, the results of study show that the individual plate method was larger than the actual measurements, while other methods are similar. The settlements at the under ground of the improved area is overestimated in all analysis methods. When comparing numerical analysis results for the horizontal displacement, and ground reaction forces, the individual pile method in equivalent wall concept was found to be the most similar to the measurements. The composite ground method was not able to predict the behavior of stress transfer (Arching effect) and it turned out that the prediction of horizontal displacement was too large.

  • In this study, Terzaghi's formula was modified to solve problems considering the dilatancy effect of the soil for estimating the earth pressure acting on tunnel. It is performed for the comparison with Terzaghi's formula and modified Terzaghi's formula, tunnel model test result of Kobe University Rock Mechanics Laboratory. From comparison results of the earth pressure acting on tunnel, the earth pressure calculated by the Terzaghi's formula was estimated largest value. The earth pressure measured through the tunnel model test was least value. The difference between the earth pressure derived from Terzaghi's original formula and that derived from the modified formula was caused by the dilation effect, which was caused by the soil volume change. The difference between the earth pressure derived from the modified formula and the earth pressure measured through the tunnel model test, earth pressure results from the energy making failure surface. The results of FEM analysis were almost consistent with the results of mathematical analysis.
