Parabolic arch ribs are widely used in practical. In case of circular arch ribs. Inelastic in-plane buckling behaviors were investigated by Trahair(1996). Recently Yong-lin Pi & Bradford(2004) investigated about in-plane design equation for circular arch ribs. In $1970{\sim}1980$. In-plane buckling strength about parabolic arch ribs were studied by some japan researchers (Sinke, Kuranishi). Study results of Sinke & kuranishi are only valid for rise-span ratio $0.1{\sim}0.2$. In this paper. The researchers investigated about in-plane inelastic buckling behaviors of parabolic arch ribs having rise-span ratio from 0.1 to 0.4. From the results. When the rise-span ratio increase, flexural moments increase and influence of axial force to in-plane buckling strength decrease. Finally, buckling curves for parabolic arch ribs subjected distributed loading along the axis were suggested.
Using the genetic algorithm, the optimal-design technique of the Nielsen arch bridge was proposed in this paper. The design parameters were the arch-rise ratio and the steel weight ratio of the Nielsen arch bridge, and optimal-design techniques were utilized to analyze the behavior of the bridge. The optimal parameter values were determined for the estimated optimal level. The parameter determination requires the standardization of the safety, utility, and economic concepts as the critical factors of a structure. For this, a genetic algorithm was used, whose global-optimal-solution search ability is superior to the optimization technique, and whose object function in the optimal design is the total weight of the structure. The constraints for the optimization were displacement, internal stress, and time and space. The structural analysis was a combination of the small displacement theory and the genetic algorithm, and the runtime was reduced for parallel processing. The optimal-design technique that was developed in this study was employed and deduced using the optimal arch-rise ratio, steel weight ratio, and optimal-design domain. The optimal-design technique was presented so it could be applied in the industry.

The parametric analysis of vertically braced steel pipe arch ribs was performed to evaluate their in-plane buckling strengths and ultimate load-carrying capacities. The elastic and plastic behavior of braced arch ribs, unlike those of the usual single arch ribs, are affected by such factors as the flexural rigidity of the brace member, brace and pipe ribs spacing, loading situation, and arch curvature. To analyze these effects, several parameters were included, such as the rise-to-span ratio, the second moment of the inertia ratio of the rib to the brace member, the space ratio of the brace, the space ratio of the upper and lower ribs, the initial crookedness, the slenderness ratios of the braced arch ribs, and the loading conditions were considered with live-load-to-dead-load ratios. Based on the results of the parametric analyses, a proper profile of the braced arch rib was proposed. A large-scale structural experiment was also performed to evaluate the ultimate strength of the braced arch rib. The test results were determined to reasonably coincide with the analytical ones.

This paper investigates the in-plane stability of fixed shallow arches. The shape of the arches is parabolic and the uniformly distributed load is used in the study. The nonlinear governing equilibrium equation of the general arch is adopted to derive the incremental form of the load-displacement relationship and the buckling load of the fixed shallow arches. From the results, it is found that buckling modes (symmetric or asymmetric) of the arches are closely related to the dimensionless rise H, which is the function of slenderness ratio and the rise to span ratio of such arches. Moreover, the threshold of different buckling modes and buckling load for fixed shallow arches are proposed. A series of finite element analysis are conducted and then compared with proposed ones. From the comparative study, the proposed formula provides the good prediction of the buckling load of fixed shallow arches.

Development of high-strength and light-weight structural steel as well as advancement in steel structure analysis enable construction of long span steel arch bridge. In an economic viewpoint, however, the design values of long span steel arch bridge needs to be optimized to reduce construction cost and achieve proper levels of structural safety. This study investigated the girder depth and the rise-span ratio for optimum design values, as well as the spectral analysis for protection against earthquake. The relationship between rise-span ratio and girder depth was derived based on the parametric studies of the basic span lengths of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100m using a commercial Cis SAP2000. The equation relating the two variables was derived using linear regression.

The lateral-torsional buckling strengths of the parabolic arches are investigated in this study. The curvatures of a parabolic arch vary along the center line of the arch. Thus, the problem is much more complicated comparing that of arches with constant curvature such as circular arches. Moreover, most of previous studies are limited to the circular arches. In this study, lateral-torsional buckling equations are derived for the arches with varying curvatures considering the warping effects. To obtain the buckling strength of parabolic arches, numerical solutions based on the finite difference technique are provided. The numerical solutions are compared with the those of previous researchers and finite element analyses. Then, the lateral-torsional strengths of parabolic arches are successfully verified. Finally, comparison study of critical buckling loads of parabolic arches with those of circular arches for the various rise to span ratios are discussed.

The dynamic vehicle running tests were performed to analyze dynamic behavioral characteristics such as displacement, strain history loop and vibration acceleration in arch bridges. Also, the validity of the modeling was verified by comparing the results of the tests and those of the structural analysis modeling. With the resonance revision of verified modeling, when the ratio of excited frequencies to natural frequencies exceeds ${1{\pm}0.04}$, the stability of the bridge is obtained. Also, in the event of resonance by speed parameter, the second mode shape is dominant to the dynamic behaviors of arch bridges. It is found that manipulating the parameters involving arch ribs can increase the second mode natural frequency. It makes critical velocity greater than operational velocities to guarantee the stability of arch bridges.

As the demand for underground space increases, many researchers have been studying the load reduction method using high compressible materials to solve for the stability problem of the overhead load and for the increase of the earth pressure which decreases the function of the underground structure. This paper determines the optimum soft zone and the effect of the using EPS Geofoam as a load reduction material to arch structures. A finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, is used to analyze the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of buried arch structures considering different four EPS Geofoam forms to confirm the most conservative shape. The optimum cross-sectional shape was determined by comparing the results of earth pressure reduction rate in accordance with the change of span-rise ratio and span length of the arch structure. It was confirmed that the earth pressure generated in the arch structure using the optimal soft zone selected by the numerical analysis was reduced by an average of 78%. In this study, the effect of EPS Geofoam on soil pressure reduction and its applicability to underground arch structures will provide an economical and conservative way to design underground structures and will help to increase the usability of deep underground space.

Recently, bridges have been momenttous as not only regarding function but also concerning aesthetics. However, when beauty is considered in the bridge, it is also essential that stability and economics be considered. Besides, when considering stability, an arch bridge is one of the most stable structures. The most important element is a rise ratio when regarding beauty and economics of arch bridges. The effect of dead load and DB24 load have been considered to decide proper rise ratio. Therefore, in this study, examined the value of moment, displacement and member forces, in the variation of the rise ratio of arch bridges. The most optimum shape of Nielsen arch bridges has determined by analyzing member forces, moments and displacement with parameters of rise ratio and angle of vertical members. By comparison between values, the hanger types have been also considered to derive the optimum shape of Nielsen arch bridge.
