  • Many young people, who are most affected by TV audition programs and the K-pop craze, have begun to choose careers in music. They attended music classes through academies or took private lessons, and then went on to a college's practical-music department. As the number of applicants increased, competition for university practical-music programs increased abnormally. As a result, many students then started learning music at an early age through private educational institutions and academies. Afterwards, as high schools related to practical music began to appear, the number of students entering practical-music high school and technical schools increased. However, a big problem in practical-music high schools was difficulty in finding professional teachers who majored in music. This arose because it was difficult for someone with a practical-music major to acquire a full-time teaching certificate. There are many ways to obtain a teacher's license, but the only option for practical-music majors is to graduate from the Graduate School of Education. However, since the Graduate School of Education is limited to classical and traditional music, admission itself is difficult. Even if someone is accepted by the school, most of the courses consist of classical music and traditional music education, which is very difficult for someone who majored in practical music. Therefore, in this thesis, we study the current situation in practical-music high schools, looking at why a regular Level 2 teaching certificate is needed and how to obtain one.

  • Vocal and instrument apprenticeship in applied music has been accepted without significant changes since the introduction of applied music education to South Korea. Few discussions or suggestions about other types of teaching than 'one-to-one lessons' or 'education of apprentices by assigned specialists' have been made. Since the introduction of applied music education to South Korea late in the 1980s, the CAI(Computer Aided Instruction) courseware development for applied music education has not actively been under way. The area of applied music has also made rapid progress in terms of music producing or music videos using computers. Actually, the improved computer program is not positively applied to applied music education. This study aimed to present learning methods using the improved functions of music production softwares to improve the traditional apprenticeship system in the area of vocal training in applied music. In particular, it used the technique of auto tune-pitch shift developed for interval correction in sound sources. By giving real-time feedbacks concerning intervals or monitors visually after recording, it intended to present a learning method to induce improvement in accuracy of intervals in vocal training. This study is expected to present a method that allows vocal trainers to overcome temporal and spatial limitations in applied music and make their vocal training more efficient.

  • This research provides suggestions for development in colleges of applied music by studying their current curriculum management status and by analyzing the curricula. To that end, this research focuses on comparing cases from four-year universities and vocational colleges. Analysis of the curricula of three departments based in Busan reveal that the curricula of applied music departments bear some resemblance to those of fine music departments, but they also have significant differences. In Busan, applied music departments have curricula influenced by fine art, but they seek differentiation in whatever ways they can. Educational institutes for applied music should expand their curricula to be more on-point, and should seek interdisciplinary courses that embrace other majors, and that promote the improvement of educational environments. Nowadays, there is a need to break away from previous discourse that happens only within the boundaries of music. For example, applied music departments could join business or media departments in launching interdisciplinary courses on music production or policies. Students would benefit from such courses as they expand the scope of their career options to consider not only being a musician but also being producers or policymakers in the arts. People from various sectors could join public discussions to jointly seek ways to promote such collaboration. Now is the time for fundamental reflection on the development of applied music in Korea.

  • The success of K-Pop music industry continues as there is a new light shedding on the new Korean wave. There is a continuous discussion about the sustainability of the idol's dance music because of its limit in the uniform genre. As a solution to improve the quality of K-pop music, researchers said to supplement it through the change of educational system in the applied music. However, research into how much the education of applied music is contributing to the continuous success of the K-Pop music industry and how each industry is affecting each other was inadequate. Therefore, this study will understand the association between the K-Pop and the applied music, and look into ways that can act as a mutual supplementation for both fields. Subjects of analysis included performing artists, composers, arrangers, lyricists, and singers for songs within the top 100 of the digital total ranking for the past three years in the Gaon chart which is the official music chart for Korea. • Due to differences in singing styles and voice production between classical and popular music singers, their knowledge and practice regarding vocal hygiene may differ. This study compared the knowledge and practice of vocal hygiene among 121 university undergraduate students (58 classical and 63 popular music vocal majors). Additionally, the correlation between the level of knowledge and practice of vocal hygiene and the subjective voice evaluation was examined. The results revealed that both knowledge and practice of vocal hygiene were significantly higher in classical than popular music vocal majors, and that vocal hygiene practice was significantly higher than knowledge in the entire group. In addition, there was a weak positive correlation between knowledge and practice of vocal hygiene; and a weak negative correlation between vocal hygiene practice and subjective voice evaluation. This study suggests that popular music vocal majors have relatively lower levels of knowledge and practice in vocal hygiene than classical music vocal majors. It also highlights the need to provide tailored vocal hygiene education programs for both classical and popular music vocal majors, as they show low levels of knowledge and practice in certain aspects of vocal hygiene.
