Study for combustion characteristic according to the O/F ratio of low thrust rocket engine using green propellant (친환경 추진제를 사용하는 저추력 엑체로켓엔진의 혼합비에 따른 연소 특성)

  • Combustion tests of a low thrust rocket engine was performed to get combustion characteristics, which used a high concentrated hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as the oxidizer and fuel. The engine consisted of multi injector(six coaxial swirl injectors), chamber, nozzle and catalyst ignition system. The test was carried out by changing O/F ratio from 3.8 to 11.0. The experimental results showed that combustion efficiency was highest at O/F ratio from 5 to 6 and pressure fluctuations of all the range were lower than 5%.

  • A ground hot-firing test(HFT) was accomplished to draw a correlation between the pressure oscillation intensity of combustion chamber and thrust response characteristics in a 70 N-class hydrazine thruster which has been developed recently. Monopropellant grade hydrazine was adopted as a propellant for the HFT, and combustion-chamber characteristic length, propellant injection pressure were applied as test parameters. It was confirmed that the decrease of thrust-chamber diameter and injection pressure augmented the pressure oscillation of stagnation chamber in the test condition specified, and the oscillation hampered the pulse response performance of test models.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) performed the conceptual design of rocket engine test facility for the development and qualification of the 3rd stage liquid rocket engine for KSLV-II. The 3rd stage rocket engine test facility, which are to be constructed at Naro Space Center, will supply propellants and high-pressure gases to engine for firing test at ground and altitude conditions. The altitude test condition is obtained using a supersonic diffuser operated by the self-ejecting jet from the liquid rocket engine.

  • 액체 로켓 추진기관의 개발에 가장 큰 장애요인은 연소불안정 현상이다. 연소불안정이 생기는 원인과 연소실내 음향효과에 따른 분류를 행하고 액체 로켓 추진기관 개발에서 발생하였던 연소 불안정 현상을 추진제 종류와 특성에 따라 살펴보았다. 또한 추진기관의 연소 안정성을 보장하기 위한 성능확인 시험과 연소 불안정을 억제하는 능동적, 수동적 방법에 관하여 기술하였다.

  • In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.

Pressure loss coefficient measurements of pyrostarter filters (파이로스타터용 필터 압력손실계수 측정)

  • An experimental apparatus has been designed and prepared in order to measure a pressure loss coefficient of hydropneumatic components, which is an important parameter in a hydropneumatic system Blow-down system has been adopted for the experimental apparatu to meet the high flow energy requirement as well as the apparatus safety. Especially, pressure loss coefficient measurements of pyrostarter filters have been performed and the pressure loss coefficient, K of CQSF has been experimentally acquired. Then it is shown that the turbine inlet pressure $p_2$, which is predicted from the measured K, is in accord with the results of combustion tests. Moreover, the relation between K and combustion pressure $p_0$ has been presented and it is disclosed that the relation accords well with the results of combustion tests. It is anticipated that K of a filter could play a role in PS size reduction by rising up the combustion pressure resulting in increasing the burning rate of solid propellant.

  • In solid propellant rocket motors, $Al_2O_3$, one of combustion products, can be accumulated inside a combustion chamber. A special rocket motor was designed and tested to simulate thermal reaction of rubber insulator affected by the deposited slag. We successfully demonstrated through a dynamic radioscopy that the slag was deposited at the location as designed. In this paper we present a new test method which can simulate a high temperature and pressure environment in combustion chamber to evaluate material characteristics of rubber insulator and can provide design data to decide its thickness for a new solid rocket motor. The solid rocket motor, which has an average chamber pressure of 770 psia and a burning time of 50 seconds, was tested. The results show that erosion of EPDM insulator is more affected by a gas velocity rather than by the thermal reaction of slag with a high thermal capacity.

Combustion Test Results of Regenerative Cooling Combustor for 30 tonf-class Liquid Rocket Engine (30톤급 액체로켓엔진 연소기 재생냉각 연소시험 결과)

  • Results of combustion tests performed for a regenerative cooling combustor of a 30 tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. The combustion chamber is composed of mixing head, baffle injector, and regenerative cooling chamber. The hot firing tests were performed at design and off-design points. The test results show that the combustion characteristic velocity is in the range of 1738${\sim}$1751 m/sec and the specific impulse of the combustion chamber is in the range of 253${\sim}$270 sec. The peak of combustion characteristic velocity and specific impulse for this combustor is shown at mixture ratio of 2.35 and 2.5, respectively.

  • 우주추진기관의 모든 부품은 생산 시 규정된 절차를 거쳐서 작동의 이상유무를 확인하는 시험을 거친다. 우주추진기관은 특별한 경우를 제외하고는 실 비행 상태에서 시험하기가 어렵거나 불편하기 때문에 지상에서 시험을 수행하여 성능 및 안정성 등을 확인하게 된다. 지상연소시험을 수행하기 위해서는 비행용 엔진을 대상으로 엔진 메니폴드에 비행 시와 같은 조건의 추진제가 공급될 수 있게 해줘야 한다. 기존에 시험장이 이미 구축되어 있는 경우 엔진의 운용조건에 맞추어 엔진에 맞게 엔진과 시험설비 연결부분이 수정되게 된다.(중략)

  • 현장방염처리 물품의 방염성능평가시 실내 인테리어 공사가 끝난 후 시험 시료를 채취하여 연소시험을 실시하게 되어있다. 그러나 이러한 절차로 인해 검사 소요시간이 길어지고 여러 민원이 발생하여 이를 대처할 시험 방법이 필요하다. 따라서 연소시험 대신 도막두께 측정 시험 방법을 도입하여 방염성능평가에 따른 문제점들을 해결하고자 한다. 도막두께 측정 시험의 경우 도막두께 측정용 라벨을 방염도료를 칠해야 하는 합판이나 목재 위에 붙이고 도료 작업이 끝나고 나면 관할 소방서에 이 라벨을 떼어서 제출하여 기준 도막 두께와 비교 측정하였을 때 기준 도막두께보다 두꺼우면 방염성능을 인정해주고 만약 기준 도막두께보다 얇게 칠해지면 현장 검사 또는 시료 채취 후 연소시험을 병행하여 검사함으로서 안전하고, 책임 있는 방염성능 시공을 할 수 있도록 관리 감독할 수 있을 것이다.
